Why Do European's on TikTok HATE American Tourists?

This OBVIOUSLY does not apply to ALL European's, 99% of y'all are chill! :) but always remember it's okay to be filled with ✨ joy and whimsy ✨ in AN ENTIRELY SEPERATE COUNTRY... 😂 if these tourists aren't hurting anyone and are only just SLIGHTLY irritating you, the shade is not necessary! 💗

That isn’t true…some may but not most, and certainly, not the way many Americans do . They compare to say as if the U.S. is better. I am American and European. The U.S. is roughly 240 years old compared to countries about 1000 years old of history…not many things to compare in terms of history and certainly not much of a comparison when you consider the social safety nets and social programs in Europe. Some comparisons may exist but the issue isn’t comparisons…those happen. The issue is the way some Americans criticize the country or culture they are visiting because it isn’t like the U.S.

As a European person I HATE these kinds of people, putting Americans & other foreigners down for having culture shocks or different customs. Believe it or not, we also have bulk stores (like Metro) and seeing people go “oh my God!!! Why is it so big!??!!” pisses me off because we also have family sizes here. Love from Hungary 🇭🇺

I feel like most of it is for the views. And those that are not, is just ignorance. I personally know people who live very sheltered and small lives. They make fun of people from other countries b/c of their own insecurities. If any of these people had seen even a little bit more of the world, a small amount of wisdom would set in, and they wouldn’t say such stupid things.

It's not really a culture shock though, there's a larger cultural difference between European countries than there is between the US and western Europe. I'd estimate the US has at least 85% cultural similarity to Europe and higher compared to the UK and Ireland. I mean what would these people have to say about Asia, Africa, or the middle east? Those have significantly larger differences in their culture and food. Compared to the US which speaks a European language, eats European food, wears European clothing, and has regular cultural exchange with Europe.

Hello! American here, I would like to mention that our portion sizes for food is often times bigger, so you can take them home for later. You want an easy lunch? Have your dinner from yesterday! Your kid needs an easy lunch, microwave yesterday’s dinner. Most people don’t eat EVERY SINGLE LAST BITE of their food unless they are hungry or the portion is smaller. It’s quite common to see to-go boxes when you don’t finish your meal.

As another American, this is completely true. I’ve never been to Europe, but I’d believe that restaurants there give smaller portions. However, nobody expects you to eat all the food you’re given at restaurants here. You eat what you’re hungry for, and you can take the rest home with you. It’s totally normal to ask for a container and take the leftovers home with you, nothing strange or rude about it at all.
@kileyblack2462
@kileyblack2462 7 ай бұрын
What's fun is I just came back from Europe (Spain, France, and Italy) and I realized that food portion sizes are much the same as in America. You can find places that sell large portion sizes, like a dedicated restaurant, or you can look for smaller places like a bakery or sandwich shop and get something lighter. Since I was doing a tour group, though, I got brought to several high end restaurants that served us the full three course meal, and I couldn't eat it all. The total amount of food was equivalent to a large plate at an American restaurant, and I had to plan out what I ate to save room for the next course. However, most restaurants I went to on my own I was able to buy a single plate of something to eat and that was fine. The major difference was that everywhere we went it was normal to take an hour to two hours to eat your meal. So in the end, depending on your time and appetite, you could end up eating the full amount of an American meal, just spread out with a lot of time to digest.
@starthornfromscratch2718
@starthornfromscratch2718 6 ай бұрын
Yep! Another American here. Having leftovers is actually really important, it's just... how we do food. I don't know how to explain it other than that. We get big portion sizes so we can eat the food again later because, crazy enough, we don't all actually eat three pounds of food in one sitting. (And I know there are also other places in the world who have a leftover culture, so it's not just us being 'crazy' ToT)

I will. I won't say I am the most friendly about America but there is a difference between people and institutions. I have met plenty of Americans, especially students. They were so sweet and kind and mostly really curious about me and my country as a french person. The only American (and I am not sure if she really was, i may not have decipher her accent, but she was a foreinger) that pissed me off was a girl in the bus on a phone call being too loud while a panel in front of her said 'Be quite while you are in a phone call, mind the other passenger'. But this same problems works for anyone who are too loud in their phone calls, be them french, european, chinese, africans, spanish or americans, it is the same for everyone. So to sum up: Americans tourist are nice, it is just some people who will be problematic but it is the same problems for any foreinger or inhabitants. That is just the way it is. And I also just like to believe, only people who are curious about another country would like to visit it, so of course they are going to compare it with their home for it is the only thing they are used to. I never went abroad, but if I did, I am sure would be comparing what I see to my home, it is just the most basic thing to do. sorry for the long message, i just wanted to share my opinion.

The FDA REQUIRES restaurants to list calorie amounts because then they understand exactly how many calories are in the gigantic portion they’ve just been served. BTW …you have to drive almost everywhere in America and with large restaurant portions it was NEVER taboo to get a “doggy bag,” especially for senior citizens who have a harder time driving at night. This way they get to have two nutritious meals instead of eating ice cream for dinner (my blind 92 year old mother was known to do that!) and b)not waste food!

That's true, & many restaurants expect to be asked for doggie bags bc they know the servings are large. Nowadays, tho, bc Bidenomics is working 'so well', restaurants are cutting down on portion sizes, & are saving $ in every way possible, + it costs double & triple compared to before 2020. I kid you not, fast food for 2 ppl is around $25-$30! It's not even any good & barely qualifies as food! At least Europe has banned a lot of things that are harmful, like gmos. We can barely find anything now w/o them! Organic meat from cows eating gmo feed is ridiculous, & our fda & usda are corrupt!

Back in the late 20's and 30's two generations were seriously traumatized by the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl events. They, in turn, traumatized the younger generations with their horror stories and instilled the value of thrift. This has led to a strong penny-pinching aspect of our culture. We do buy in bulk to save money. And we definitely value large portions at restaurants. But then, as you pointed out, the 'doggy bag' really is expected here. Yes, we actually do expect to pay for one meal and get two. Even at nicer restaurants. It justifies spending the money on something as frivolous as eating out. Now that the economy has retracted, thrift culture is rearing up even stronger than before. Companies are pulling back on portions to reduce layoffs, but the average consumer is screaming about 'shrinkflation' because the cost of groceries has gone through the roof. The generations who survived the Depression have mostly passed, but their admonishments are loudly ringing in our ears now. Kids who are born after things shrink will think as the Europeans do about portion sizes. It'll be their 'normal' and they won't feel cheated. _ And I'm one of the health-conscious Americans who was thrilled when they started posting calories on the menus. Before smart phones I actually had to carry a fat, little book of macros and calories, sit down, and math my meal before I could place my order. It does help people make better choices without much effort.

I am an American, and my mother and I actually experienced rudeness from Europeans while vacationing there. She had a man approach her in Paris 🇫🇷 after overhearing her speak English and asked if she was American 🇺🇲 or Canadian 🇨🇦. When she replied "American" he just sort-of sniffed, turned up his nose and said "Oh.", and walked away. When I was in London 🇬🇧 my ex and I encountered a VERY mean Tube worker who yelled at my then-boyfriend for accidentally grabbing his expired pass from the day before and trying to use it, not realizing it was the wrong one. He actually yelled at us and said "What are you, an idiot?!!" I remember thinking I couldn't believe they have the audacity to refer to us as "Rude Americans" after that. 💜

So… what would be considered a “joke” or “banter” and what would it actually be considered “slander”??? (Now don’t get me wrong, though! I love me some good British humor.) So.. you expect us all to laugh along your so-called “banters”??? What if we are laughing with you, but then you guys are like “Oh my goddd.. Also, there are people who are Autistic that might have trouble telling and picking up subtle hints and may not be able to pick up the joke, because many of them on the spectrum take words at FACE VALUE. Lol yeah I live in Texas too, in the DFW metroplex. Sometimes I see people wearing American or Texas flag shirts. I’m pretty sure my 87 year old grandfather who has lived in Texas his whole life has a “God Bless Texas” shirt lmao. He also owns about 40 guns for…some reason. Some people do embody the “highly patriotic American garbed in equally patriotic attire” stereotype, but it is honestly a very small portion of the population and, I have to say, probably largely in the South and on the Eastern Seaboard. While many Americans hold the highly patriotic and conservative values associated with that type of clothing, it’s less common to see people flaunting “God Bless America” and “Land of the Free” shirts than a non-American might think. On another somewhat related note: in case this wasn’t already known, yes, we do sometimes wear cowboy hats. But really only on special occasions, like prom, a football game, or a rodeo. If you do wear one, it’s, like, the ultimate masculine country signifier. It is a way of declaring “I am from Texas and I am proud of it” without saying a single word. Reserved for only the hickest of hicks, in my experience. Or at least those who aspire to attain that aesthetic. When guys show up to a place wearing cowboy hats, you know the event is going to be aggressively Southern. You typically won’t see people just walking around in Walmart wearing cowboy hats, though it does happen once in a blue moon.

As an American, no I don’t drink a 2 liter soda everyday. People here buy in bulk because American families average on having 5 living creatures in a house. Including the humans and pets. We buy in bulk so we don’t have to go to the store everyday. We don’t eat a family sized chip bag in one sitting. Either it’s for a big family or to eat some and save the rest for later. My family has four to five people living there at once. So no shit there is going to be a ton of food and stuff in the house. Meds in bulk goes for the same thing with food. So you don’t have to drive down to the store everytime you don’t feel good. So you can just go to the cabinet and grab the meds you need so it’s easier. Buying in bulk is very common here.

Honestly I've had a manna bottle for years now and it keeps things cold up to 48 hours if it's with ice. About 24 if it doesn't. It's either a 32 or 48 Oz bottle but it's convenient to have next to me vs just constantly getting up for water

Midwestern American here: sound and environment take a key role into when we feel it's appropriate to speak, speak quietly, or speak freely. In an environment like church, funeral home, government buildings, a bookstore, or a calm cafe, we tend to only speak softly. In busy areas like bars and restaraunts are we noisier, but it's rude to yell here, too. I haven't taken public transport here but in a lot of media I've seen depicting it in the States it's relatively quiet.

As someone who lives right beside America 🇨🇦. That comment on the tik tok about "back in the states" no American has ever said that. They call it America 99% of the time it's what state they're from or if they're from a more populated state it's what city or neighborhood. That chic was full of it. Besides everyone is loud when they're happy or drunk. Tourists tend to be loud and excitable, just saying it's people from the US isn't right. If you want to see loud tourists go to Niagara Falls. Idk about the American side but on our side you can't hear the person beside you half the time. Can we stop blaming America and Americans for all worlds problems.

yeah and why the hell would you order mexican nacho's with salsa at a Italian restaurant is my question, i am pretty sure i have never seen that on the menu anywhere in europe apart from cinema's and exclusively mexican restaurants and we travel quite a lot due to open borders, which makes sense since its a damn movie snack you can make at home, just a bag of chips and salsa, there is no demand for that to be on any restaurant's menu unless it fits with the theme since you're better off making it at home, so i fully understand why she didn't get what she wanted in the video at 10:38 because they literally dont have it in stock and had to improvise for her odd custom order by as you can clearly see, cutting up potato's into tiny slices and cooking them with a bit of salt, and even after all that work to give her something that was as close as possible to her odd order, she still dared to complain. i like Hayley but she truly fell off the wall like humpty dumpty with this video with in my opinion, pretty dumb takes.

I’m going overseas to Europe in a month and I plan to be on my best behavior while still staying true to my American cultural identity, in a most respectful way. I plan to learn and adopt some new practices and perspectives. That is how you explore the world, not with judgement- but curiosity. The lack of self awareness is absolutely astounding. I find it wonderful when people come to Texas from OTHER STATES and are like “woah this is so wild, we don’t or do have XYZ” and they’re kind and excited- not mean and judgmental. I freeze fresh eggs from our chickens, but for longterm storage. You have to crack & scramble them before pouring in silicone trays. Then, I vacuum seal after popping them out of the trays. This is far better than water glassing uncracked eggs, bc if just 1 cracks open, it ruins the rest. After freezing them, they're great for baking, & scrambled eggs taste the same as w/o freezing. You can't really freeze whole eggs bc the yolk doesn't freeze well. I also prefer freezing bc if vacuum sealed, they last indefinitely, + we have tons of eggs bc our hens lay daily. They'll eat their own eggs, which is weird!

It would be 10 times easier for me to grab a bunch of pills , but I cannot , because I am not paying for my pills , the goverment is , I need to do this whole thing for something I need. Im Canadian and i live in Sweden and i enjoy seeing tourists! Even greeting them. Ps: no i do not speak swedish, i don't understand their language nor can i read their language. Continuing: Tourists are really nice most of the time, they should get some respect.. Lastly, mind your own business about where I live y'all, I don't wanna feel uncomfortable..

If you can't understand the language, let alone read it, then why do you live in Sweden? Honest question.

this really just reinforces the saying "Australians are British Texans". its more impressive that yall can survive the insane wildlife of the continent, which is the one reason I dont want to go to the land down under

Nah We don't go to church, we aren't fat, we don't have flags every where. Saying Aussie's are like British is one of the nastiest insults, we are our own people. But you got the critters right. It's very very bad here, most of Australia is in the grips of a Taipan plague, snakes every where. Also in a week it's going to be Spider season and we are warned it's going to be very bad, 10 spiders per sq yard.

@l-m6313 I think it's always been equal-ish but that it definitely fluctuates from time to time. I think American and Foreign media, and how that's evolved over time, is to blame for the increases and decreases.

7:10 The funny thing is, that ramen bowl size is pretty standard in Japan. When I went to visit, every restaurant that I ordered ramen from, was that size. And they didn’t give me that because I’m a “fat American”, I’m actually considered under weight for my height, that was just the standard serving size for ramen.
