Mick!! Long time subscriber here, this video saved me so much hassle! Had to replace the rod and was having a nightmare trying to figure out how to extend the spring onto the rod, your genius method elicited an audible "ooooh thats how you do it!" Thankyou so much.

Mick - great idea about using string to pull the spring. I added a loop in it and used a long screwdriver to lever the string via the loop - gave me more control and more pulling power - made slipping the spring over the rod very easy.

I drilled out the ends and popped in split pins, as the original rod. Save lots of time, rather than using star lock cap clips. Great Video Mick…

Just back from the shed where I just changed mine. Would have struggled without this vid thank you. Just to note, on my 2002 model there are 2 locating holes for the bar on the roller arm. Make sure you use the correct one...I didn't and it was a faff taking it apart again to get it right. I also drilled the bar and added spilt pins as mentioned here in the comments which was a massive help. Thanks again.

Thanks to your very helpful videos I got the connecting rod fitted with little trouble. The main difficulty was fitting the star washers which need a fait amount of force to get them seated. I found tensioning the spring easier by leaving the front end of the rod unconnected. It was easy to connect the spring and then simply turn the mower on to its wheels. The weight of the mower tensioned the spring and it was easy to connect the rod to the front wheel swivel.

I’ve just worked on one of these because the green trigger mechanism was broken. It looks as though the green triggers are made of plastic and, at the inner end, they contain a small bar which fits into one of the slots of the height adjuster. Replacement cost for a trigger is about £10 and as they seem prone to breaking, they would be an ideal product to make in one of the new 3D metal printers (if anyone has any such contacts). The whole mechanism that Mick has repaired all works on the strong spring combined with the ratchet and swivelling axels.

Yeah mate it's one of many common parts that breaks

Most of Hayters 41's share a number of parts, the Harrier and Hawk share that particular rod which in my opinion has a design fault. The hair pin bend is there solely to attach the spring, its formed cold in a press which causes internal stress fractures which don't show until it snaps! My fix is the weld a piece of rod across the widest point so the stress from raising and lowering the machine is transfered away from the bend and in a straight line between its fixing points. Simple fix and I can guarantee it won't ever break in that point again.

Yes.. however if you don't that it may effect the height control as the bar slides under the. Handle.. but it's a good idea..

Micks Mowers Thanks Mick. I’ll have a look. Do I need to drain the fuel tank fully, before tipping?

@@froglife5564 yeah take it out and also check the fuel lines inside the tank. One should be longer then the other with a filter on it

Forget the string, simply taken off the adjustable handle and the spring just slides on so easy. Turn mower back over put slight pressure on the front which will allow easy reconnection of the handle

A bloody lousy design that height adjuster, a flimsy bit of mild steel with all that tension on it is never going to last. No wonder people went and bought Japanese products instead!

I have a very old 'Hobby', 1960s, the height adjuster is broken, otherwise a good little mower with Briggs engine but only as good as the weakest part, I shall probably fabricate a stronger one.
