Hayward Pool Pump Motor replacement: Century Pool Motor install and wiring: Pool Pump not working

Thank you for this incredibly helpful video. We were able to replace our Hayward motor (which was probably not installed correctly as it was totally corroded inside when we took it off) with a new Century motor without any issues at all. The owner of the pool store that sold us the motor gave us such an attitude for installing it ourselves and even said “you’ll be back looking for help”. Nope…totally did it ourselves using this video as the perfect step-by-step. THANK YOU!!

Great video!! I just replaced my motor and having a problem. The motor works but won’t sustain the pumping action. It sucks the water then dies, sucks water and dies; on and on. I’m thinking that maybe the impeller is not tight enough or it’s the 230v to 115v switch. I did put it in the 115 position as it is 115v. Any thoughts.

Thank you so much. My motor plate and motor shaft were very calcified. I have been chasing an annoying leak which I thought would be gone when we redid some plumbing. It still leaked and now that the motor went bad, I had the opportunity to take things apart. I was wondering if this calcification is an indication of the leak. I have pictures if that is helpful. Calcification is a good sign of a leak probably a shaft seal went out causing moisture to get in your motor and seized it up

Looks like the old pump have two capacitors. Do you need to reinstall the capacitor that located on top of the old pump? Thank you

The new pump motor will come with the capacitor already mounted so no need to mess with removing or adding a capacitor. I think this pump had two just because of the size being 2 hp plus but I'm not 100 percent sure on this.

Great video! How do I keep the water from entering the pump during the changeout? Do I need to drain the pool down past inlet and outlet?

Thanks for the compliment and yes if you don't have shut off valves or some type of marine rubber winterizing plug to put in the inlet or outlet I would just drain the water down if the water level in the pool is above your pump.

I personally have never had an issue with power from the capacitor with changing over 100 motors in my life but always check your power terminals with a voltage meter before touching them. Having to discharge a capacitor on a pool motor is very rare.

Hello, first of all thank you for your videos, i had a question, (curiosity)😅 I just wanted to ask why it's written on this motor that is not allows to be installed on the pools in California state? Again sorry for my question, I live in Italy and I don't know the rules of American states.

California has a law labeled title 20 that states any pool pump that's .71 hp to 2.5 Hp must be variable speed so it can run at a low speed to save energy due to California's high energy demands and restrictions. If the pump has the label your speaking of then it's a one speed pump and only operates at high speed.

If the switch is covering the end of the motor shaft and is v- shaped its the Centrifugal switch.

Hi MO, I can't remember exact cost but that motor being a 2 hp motor probably cost them about $350 plus an hour labor at $95 plus new pump seal and gaskets $30. Thanks for watching!

My impeller is locked (not rotating) and I cannot screw it out, what can I do?

Sounds like the impeller is totally seized onto the motor shaft. The only thing is try to muscle it off but its probably gonna break and you will probably have to replace the impeller also. The pump seal leaking is usually the culprit for this situation.

Century motors are good replacement motors and the horse power of the two motors are close enough to not have to change the impeller. Your impeller will work no problem.

what size fittings are those in the inlet and outlet (1.5,2,etc)? They standard parts you can get at lowes/homedepot?

This being a two horse power pump in this video the fittings are 2 inch. The smaller pumps are mostly 1.5 inch unless ordered specifically with 2 inch. Yes you can find these fittings at lowes etc.

My bad so in the wiring part of the video I used a wiring harness off of a two speed spa motor that I had laying around the shop that had an extra wire being a neutral to support a GFI breaker for a spa. You shouldn't have a neutral wire to deal with unless you have one hot wire and a neutral for 120 volts. 240 volt will be two hots and a ground. I'm slapping myself now for choosing that wiring for my demonstration its a bit confusing and thanks for pointing it out to me.

How about the rotation check? Can it run the wrong direction?

The pool pumps only rotate one direction no matter which power terminal you use. If you hook it up wrong you get no response, a really rough running motor or a blown breaker.

I normally will add the silicone o-ring lubricant to all Rubber gaskets and orings before putting things back together. Makes them last longer and seal better. Sorry if I wasn't clear on this issue and thanks for watching..

Sorry I think I misunderstood your question. Your talking about the jumper switch is missing. you definitely need one. I've never wired a motor with out it sorry.

Also FYI, Genuine Hayward motors are no different than generic motors.. AO Smith is the supplier to Hayward. and AO Smith is as generic as they come. Stop wasting money on a "genuine" Hayward motor. Look at any of these pool pump motors with his frame style.. they are all built exactly the same. The "Hayward" motor sticker even says it's made in China and distributed under the AO Smith name. The fact that they get them painted gold and add on a sticker that says Hayward is laughable to anyone trying to buy or tout " genuine" Hayward parts.
