From www.swimmingpoolsteve.com/pag... this video is intended to show you what comes in the box when you purchase a new Tristar 900 1.85hp variable speed pump from Hayward. In this video you see the dealer protected model SP32900VSP versus the open product line pump which is similar but not exactly the same, the SP3202VSP Tristar.
NOTE - The Tristar VS 900 is fully automation compatible as shown - the ND model of Tristar is discontinued**
The pump includes 2" / 2.5" CPVC unions, a platform base to match up with the intake height of a Pentair Whisperflo pump, a data communication cable, an owners manual and fast start laminated card. The keypad rotates in all directions with only two screws required to re-orient the direction. The model of pump featured in this video is dual voltage compatible with 115v / 230v applications. One of the best features of this pump, aside from the impressive flow volume and electrical efficiency, is the size of the leaf strainer basket being so large. This is definitely an advantage for pools with a lot of organic debris and leaves.

Not only do I love watching people get excited about things specific to their trade that your average person just shrugs their shoulders at, but also at how much goes into the "behind the scenes" of luxuries we so greatly take for granted. I'd never have thought there are so many variations of pumps for a pool, or that pool pumps are a thing that could be coveted!

Thanks for recommending this pump for my homemade pool Steve. This Steve is a great man folks. My pool is incredible and I would still be stuck at just a deep hole in the ground if not for Steve. Thanks a million Steve.

I had a Pentair intelliflo 3HP that "Died" due to a freezing issue, but after watching this, I ordered the SP32900 online and self installed this weekend. Yup I have heard the same from other people with that pump. I only started.saging it when I saw it in the Haywarf literature. I figured they know the product better than I. Could be this changed at some point after.the SP3200VSP model was dropped for the newer SP3202VSP. Thanks for commenting. Cheers.

I got this pump with my pool last year and really like it, I will say I took the advice from Swimming pool steve and also installed a flowmeter in my setup and calculated out my low, mid and high speeds to turnover my water 3 times a day. the one thing I do like about the stand alone controller vs my Hayward prologics controller and the reason I don't used it with the automation controller is you have 8 timers you can use on the stand alone pump controller vs the 4 on the prologics controller (Hayward theres a suggestion make your automation controllers just as good as your pump controller), with the 8 timers i have my pump alternate 4hrs low, 2hrs mid, 4 hrs low, 2 hrs high x 2, now I could just increase the amount of time and run on just the 4 timers but i like the more broken up option throughout the 24 hr cycle. and using a watt meter and doing the math this runs me about $25 dollars a month (I'm southwestern Ontario Canada) About 2 hours west of Steve

I an a relatively new pool owner. The home I purchased two years ago has a large in-ground pool, and I am trying to LEARN how to run and maintain it! So far, I have not had to replace or upgrade any of the equipment, but it does have some age on it, so i anticipate some changes in the next few years. This video was very helpful as I learn what is the best equipment to use. I will definitely keep watching!
@Swimmingpoolsteve
@Swimmingpoolsteve Жыл бұрын
Definitely something to think about is older pumps (single speed ones) use an enormous amount of power, even when you run them on reduced hours only. The money you will save with the VS pump upgrade will pay for the whole upgrade cost plus put a substantial amount back into your pocket as well. It takes a few years to return your total investment, but definitely realistic. Which means waiting for your old energy hog pump to die from old age might not be in your best interest. The rest of the equipment I am less concerned about. No major technological upgrades for filters and heaters like there has been in recent years with variable speed pumps. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@Swimmingpoolsteve Mine is definitely a single-speed pump. My pool is fairly large. I am told it is over 30,000 gallons (20' x 40'). If I decide to get a new pump, what do I need?
@Swimmingpoolsteve
@Swimmingpoolsteve Жыл бұрын
@sethwaggoner6497 still not enough info. Number of pipes, size of each, how many suction points, what peripheral equipment you run like heat pumps, gas heater, SWG, plus what features does the pool have? A lot of moving targets and variables here. It's not impossible to figure out, but more than you can realistically answer via a KZbin comment. Especially since efficiency and water clarity are only some of the considerations. Safety and entrapment hazards being the serious concern for answering a question like this without actually seeing and evaluating the pool, or conducting a somewhat extensive back and forth to sift through the pertinent details. With the right pipe configuration and sizing the VS900 definitely can be enough, more than enough for a pool your size. Your pipes are the limiting factor here.

Those are some of the features that had me buy the Pentair Superflo VST. I offered a dealer $500 for their unused open box floor model four years ago and they took it so it was a steal. I even rigged up a Shelly relay controller to it so I could turn on the quick clean speed via my phone whenever I add chems to the pool. I’m fact I could use that relay port to fully automate the pump but the built in timer functions are just fine. Looking forward to seeing your vids on this if I should ever need a replacement.

I did a ton of testing with the superflo VS 342001 which has a similar performance curve to your model. It's super powerful. A 2.2thp pump, and it performs as such. People often look at super pump versus superflo but those two in particular have very different performance curves.

I could be wrong, but i think the base is also important to keep the underside of the pump dry for wet weather. Also, I wouldn't install a pump like this unless if a pool was bonded and grounded, especially with pools converting salt water to chlorine to reduce the potential of galvanized degradation.

Always enjoy your video content and I have learned from you, so thank you. I trust your recommendation on this pool pump, but I really have a problem when pump manufacturers will not sell directly to the public. We should have that option. Case in point, look what Tesla is doing to the buying process. Dealerships and Pool companies being protected by manufacturers will eventually lose the battle.
@Swimmingpoolsteve
@Swimmingpoolsteve Жыл бұрын
I fought harder and louder than any other person about this move to dealer protected products. But this is what the industry professionals want, and what the manufacturers are giving them. There are still some you can buy on the open line, this pump (close to it) included, but I think it is an eventuality that all manufacturers end up here. They already have...any of the most recognizable manufacturers have already implemented this.

I am aware of how correct you are about manufacturers support and also aware of the alternative pumps offered direct to consumer. I recently replaced and installed mine, replaced my old automation to control it and saved $2800 and change in the process. I was willing to pay a pool company I have used for repairs for the last 15 years, but their prices were unreasonable and calling other services for quotes were similar in price. It appears that all service companies are practicing greedanomics.

Great video, subscribed! how does this compare to something like Jacuzzi variable speed 1.85 or 2.7THP pumps? Hayward makes them for Leslie pool and brands it for Jacuzzi. It's just tan vs all black with Hayward. What's the best for long terms usage, energy efficiency, warranty and flow profile? I have about 19000 gallon size salt water pool. Also looking at Pentair Intelliflo3 and Jandy pumps 1.85/2.7. My single speed died and now moving to VS for better reliability and potential energy savings in years to come. Thanks

We have this 900 VS pump. Quiet. Easy to clean basket. Pool builder programmed to run at about 2100 rpm continuously which yielded a total of 40 gallons per minute. Ours is run off an Omnilogic control panel. We have since changed the programming for energy reduction but still maintain about three water turnovers in a 24 hour period. Piping is 2 inch with four returns. One skimmer and floor suction. Pleased with the pump.

Dual voltage doesn't seem like a good enough reason to buy this rather than the "non-expert" version. Vast majority of pools already have 240V wiring. Are there other differences that justify the (surely significant) price bump for this one? Good video. Thanks.

The viton pump seal is a real, material difference. Intangible difference is the warranty. Honestly, warranty is probably the biggest difference that a pool owner would experience buying online versus from a local pool dealer. The performance of the pumps on the pool itself should be identical.

What are your thoughts on the similar Jandy VS FLOPRO 1.85 HP VSFHP185DV2AS?
@Swimmingpoolsteve
@Swimmingpoolsteve Жыл бұрын
Looking at the performance curve for that pump you can see it has a similar range of resistance to flow as the tristar 1.85hp performs, with perhaps 25% less flow towards the top end. Not because the jandy pump is less good, but appears to fall somewhere in between the capability of the super pump VS and this tristar pump. So it would depend on the needs of your pool as to which one ypu would need. If ypu need more flow potential the VS 900 is better, but that is only one metric of consideration

If I want more clicks I have to play the game. I don't like it either, if I am honest. But the reality is the click through rates are higher. Way higher. Every metric matters and being that my content is pool related I am Ata tremendous disadvantage already with only perhaps 5% or less of youtube users actually having a pool. If I had my way I would not use thumbnails like this. But when I do, the algorithm rewards it. I do hear your feedback. Your estimates are a little low and represent a reduced operating schedule which likely does not meet the turnover requirements of the pool. If you want an apples to apples comparison - 60,000 gallons of filtered water per day with single speed vs variable speed, the savings at 7 years is $4300. VS pumps are inherently more efficient. So even if you run at around 3000 rpm (around 1.5hp single speed performance) it will save you money. Ignoring that however, the manufactures no longer make single speed pumps larger than 3/4hp now. I would suggest Jandy Flopro 1.5 however. This is because it has all the features Steve pointed out on the hayward one but its less expensive, quieter, much more reliable, has auxiliary relays, and the efficiency wont drop like a rock when connected to 115V like the hayward one.
@drdrew3
@drdrew3 Жыл бұрын
@@robbs96Everybody acknowledges that VS pumps are more efficient and will save you money every month - but that wasn’t the question. This model is 4x the price of SS pumps that can do the same job. It takes a looong time to save enough to justify that price differential. And there are a dozen other VS pumps that can do it for less too. The 3 HP is a beast - but it’s overkill and overpriced for a typical backyard pool. Steve got the Ferrari of pumps and paid the price.
@robbs96
@robbs96 Жыл бұрын
@drdrew2 you obviously didnt read my entire comment. single speed pumps aren't even an option anymore, so the point is moot. Also Steve didn't get the Ferrari of pumps, he got the geo metro. He didn't pay the price either as hayward gave it to him. I also suggested a different pump that is much more reliable and less expensive. If you have a SS pump, run it till its dead and replace with a jandy pump. Did you get to the end this time?
