The Boeing X-20 Dyna-Soar ("Dynamic Soarer") was a United States Air Force (USAF) program to develop a spaceplane that could be used for a variety of military missions, including aerial reconnaissance, bombing, space rescue, satellite maintenance, and as a space interceptor to sabotage enemy satellites.

Really excellent job.You captured the qualities of the old NASA animations of the early 60's that i watched as a kid. Dyna-Soar was a big deal to us X-15 fans back then. Orbiting a fully controllable space plane seemed to make way more sense than the "spam can" capsule approach.The most amazing thing at the time was seeing over a billion dollars spent on something almost to the point of completion wasted.It would have been interesting to see the trajectory of the space program if there had been a Dyna-Soar, an MOL, and the expanded capacity Gemini capsules.
@trespire

Agreed. The Dyna-Soar could have flown. The only thing holding it back was material science, and they were making huge progress in that field. I'm hoping Dream Caser will live up to this legacy.

Love this!! One of my first mentors worked on the X-20 as a young man and had some very cool stories to tell. I've been fascinated by it ever since and it's very cool to see it brought to life, so well. The all-metal heat shield on the X-20 would have been a heck of a thing (and is an idea Space-X is resurrecting, over 50 years later). Really liked the transition from newsreel-looking film at the beginning and end of the video - really nests it in with the period look.

Nice job! My grandfather, Vic Horton, worked with several of the Dyna Soar pilots out at Edwards, namely Milt Thompson, Bill Dana and Neil Armstrong. One minor quibble about your video, though: you show the forward cockpit windows throughout the flight, much like the Space Shuttle. On the actual X-20, the forward windows were to have been covered with a jettisonable heatshield / fairing throughout the mission, until just after reentry.

A large scale mockup of the X-20 Dyna-Soar was on display at the 1992 World's Fair in Seattle. I was very disappointed to later learn that the program was cancelled and all US space efforts would be focused on the "spam in a can" capsule concept. I still view that decision to be extremely short sighted and wasteful of the technology that had been developed by Boeing. Today the need for an X-20 class of space plane is driving new designs and highlighting the shortsighted ending such a valuable program. Thanks for producing this beautiful animation of what NASA could have been accomplished in the mid 1960's and is only now realizing with the Sierra Nevada Dream Chaser.
