I think that's how the song was originally written though. The higher octave version I think you're referring to was sung by Cynthia Erivo, but I could be wrong lol. In the original recording it does sound like this in terms of the vocal melody

Really wish the director made this sequence much more cinematic. It’s the number the broadway audience is waiting for, and while I completely understand it stands on its own just showing us the singer going through her motions, this was a chance to also give us incredible visuals of everything Celie is acknowledging that brought her to this moment. But Fantasia turned in a stellar performance, of course.
