Thanks so much for this series, Howard. - really informative. I once played the actual Mellotron mk II which Tony Banks used to record Watcher of the Skies; when I was at school in the the late 1970s a friend, Ian, found this ex-Genesis instrument in a music shop in Tunbridge Wells, bought it and brought it to school for a few days, and I played it briefly. However, Ian sold it again quite quickly. He also had an Arp Pro-soloist (but not the one Tony Banks had actually played!) which I was also able to play.

Cool video, thanks for sharing! Tony Banks is underrated as a keyboard player, and I appreciate you taking the time to showcase his sounds and compositions. By the way, I have the same Yamaha S30 synth, which I also think is underrated! 👍

I SO appreciate your doing this! This is so helpful as I just picked up an ARP Pro DGX which is very close. Thank you!

Can you share the sounds I want to download the patches into my Korg workstation

wondering why you do not have an ARP pro-soloist. The sounds are close, but not exactly the same as the original APR (pronounced Arp, not A-R-P) the genesis tribute band that we see has all of the original keyboards from the original hammond, mellotron, arp pro soloist, RMI piano, etc . . .

Simon says close. Cowelling over your incredible sounds.

Actually, A-R-P is a perfectly acceptable pronunciation of these letters, as they stand for Alan Robert Pearlman, the founder of ARP Instruments.

You mentioned you have a virtual instrument for ARP pro soloist sounds - what is that? I've been looking for one, I've fond one for Windows but not Mac (I use LogicPro).

Marvelous work! What is the top keyboard again that gives you all those sweet Genesis sounds?? Are those the factory presets or are these VST’s you loaded into your synth? Thanks!

Hi Howard, love your videos. Big big help for a young Genesis fan and keyboardist like myself, especially the demonstration of Tony's organ drawbars! If you aren't busy, I would like your advice. Do you have any suggestions concerning midi foot pedals for use on Moog Taurus bass synth sounds? All the newer units are exceedingly expensive, and I'm wondering if there are any older units I should be on the look out for. Cheers!

Midi bass pedals are the most reasonable I've found. our bass player uses these. Ketron make some. You can also sometimes pick up midi bass pedals. You need to then link these to a decent sound module. We use a Yamaha MU80. Its fairly old but has some great synth sounds on it and you can mix them. With the MU80 we have programmed all the key sounds on the bass pedals that Mike Rutherford used.

I think you may have switched the oboe and violin sounds on Cinema Show. I'm almost positive the violin comes in when you switch to the oboe sound, but I'm not as certain about what comes before it. I've read it's the harpsichord setting but that doesn't sound quite right; to my ear it sounds more like the oboe with high brilliance. (EDIT) Also curious: how did Tony get that strange downward-pitch sound at about 5 minutes into "Moonlit Knight"? It sounds like pitch bend, decrease in brilliance, fade out, and echo all at once, possibly more too...

Question: what are these keyboards you’re using? And are you using the sounds from the keyboard itself or is it hooked up to some sort of midi unit?
@evankeal Жыл бұрын
He spent the time to recreate them on the Yamaha by hand.

Great insight into a great instrument by the example of how a great player used to master it...until, alas, he was "threwing it all away".

I'm sorry Howard but the sounds are not those of the Pro-Soloist and unfortunately you perform the songs very badly. You should listen to the notes again to play them correctly.
