So if 3 seconds per lap was incredible, then what was Bellof's rating who was catching Senna faster than Senna was catching Prost then? Prost couldn't get heat into his carbon fiber brakes, that's why he was slow, Bellof had a normally aspirated car which is much easier to drive in the rain than the turbos. There is no secret ingredient, there is no magic, there are always simple facts that explain situations that fanboys have no interest in determining. Sure Senna was a quick driver, but a superhuman god he was not.
@markmark5269
@markmark5269 5 жыл бұрын
PS: In the McLaren's when Prost and Senna were team-mates, Prost set twice as many fastest laps during the races than Senna did. People can keep pretending that Senna was faster than Prost because he qualified ahead of Prost more often, but the fact is that being faster in the race was more important in those days. Qualifying is more critical these days of course because they can't pass now.

So if you please could make it available, time laps, how much difference per lap Bellof was reducing (numbers), something that show us that Bellof was going to surpass Senna (more: if even Mansell with that beast FW14B [on fresh tyres] was not able to pass Senna in Monaco...) PS: Interestingly, Arnoux was known for being a tough guy about overtakes - and Senna passed him in 1 lap, while Bellof took 6 laps to pass Arnoux. Afterwards Senna still passed the champ LAUDA in his McLaren (brilliantly before the St. Devote) - while Bellof didn't have to, because Lauda spun off. 1st lap: Senna P9 / Bellof P10. @@keithrichards4296 When Senna was 11 seconds behind Prost and Bellof was catching up, that was the last lap. Not the first or second laps. Maybe you should look at how Senna was not even close to Prost when the race was stopped. Prost stopped for the red flag and Senna ignored the red flag. If you looked you should be able to find out that after Senna set his fastest lap he slowed down because of damaged suspension. Senna said he could see one of the from wheels moving about more than it should and his team said it would not have lasted much longer. It really is funny how Senna fanboys make so much out of a very lucky second place for Senna. You mentioned that it was hard to overtake at Monaco, If Senna hadn't damaged his suspension would he have even caught up to Prost? I am quite sure Prost would have responded and not just let Senna go past. Lauda was having brake problems, as was Prost but Prost was managing it better. Cry away all you like.

Bellof was indeed fast as his teammates in Sports Cars recall him but he lack discipline, as Derek Bell said in 1983 at the Nurburgring 1,000km Endurance race they we're told not to push so hard and try to only set slow laps Bell crossed the line in 6:42.000 while Bellof was doing less than 6:30.000s lap after lap and moments later Bellof crashed and was eliminated at the lead.

cory2146 The ironic part is that they hurt Prost in the long run. Prost has said he was willing to accept second place if the race went on, because (as always) he was interested in the points count. If the race had gone on, he would have gotten second even if Bellof had passed him too, since Tyrrell was later disqualified from every race. And if he had, he would have gotten six points instead of the four and a half he got for winning a race that didn't pass the halfway point. Which means he would have been the 1984 World Champion by one point, instead of losing to Lauda by a half-point.

Fun Fact: If the race hadn't been stopped and Senna would have actually won, 2nd place would have been enough for Prost to win the world championship. Prost lost the championship by half a point because this "win" only got him 4,5 points due to the shortened race distance. 2nd place over the whole distance would have earned him 6 points and would have made him world champion by one point at the end of the year.

When teo weeks ago the Monaco Gran Prix was about to start, It has been delayed of some minutes because of Rain. Than, with NO RAIN, they authorized the formation lap; we could hear the drivers' voice at the radio protesting that they could not see. So they stopped the start agan. The race only started when there was no water on the asphalt. Obviously my Memories went back to that 1984 race when a young Ayrton Senna was so good to rise the anonymous Tolemann Hart up to second place under a gigantic flood! And no need to say that noone was telling him what to do by radio! Only on his own. What a difference with today's PlayStation drivers, keeping two fingers on the wheel and only waiting for instructions.

Ah yes, the moment at which Alain Prost with his crystal ball saw into a future where everyone acclaimed Senna as the best racing driver of all time, and hated what he saw. He then forgot that Niki Lauda was the man he was competing against, and conspired with an all-French panel of mustachio-twirling FIA gangsters to cancel the race so a new racer named Ayrton Senna wouldn't win the race. Alain Prost, after all, is well known for caring less about championship points than satisfying his ego by winning every race. That's how it happened.

Bernd Rosemeyer, Eifelrennen, 1936. Bernd was running 3rd, in only his second major race. The FOG came down over the Nordschleife. Everyone else slowed. Rosemeyer didn't - and drove as if there was clear vision, winning the race easily. A forgotten great as he was pre-war. PS His widow, Ellie, years later confirmed his fog prowess when recounting being a passenger alongside Bernd on an ordinary road journey. Bernd was really shifting in thick, thick fog, and was pulling out to overtake cars that she actually couldn't even see until they were alongside. A very, very different ability than Ayrton's skill in the rain.

Indeed. Several theories - the common one being a gust of wind that took the car sideways, and a very interesting one concerning a very early use of ground-effect. That argument is that Auto Union had no idea of the downforce created by a sealed unit (skirts etc), and the chassis just buckled under the stress. Whatever happened, it was a tragic loss to the sport. Here's a photo taken just before the attempt - skirts and all... www.google.com/url?sa=i&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiXw-uvlrfgAhUHgM4BHdifAvcQjRx6BAgBEAU&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pinterest.com%2Fpin%2F174584923028343968%2F&psig=AOvVaw0mZ5CiFbxuq413NhY0lseR&ust=1550094496684155

Schumacher and Stewart rival anything Senna ever did in the rain. Some of Schumacher's leads in terms of time and how much faster per lap in the rain were unquestionably some of the greatest feats in F1 history. Stewarts drive at The Nurb in the 1968 German GP in the fog and rain was also in another world, besides his other rain drives. And the tracks were tree, telephone poles, and house lined in those days.

Bellof was driving a Tyrrel, the only atmospheric engine in the race (200 hp less than the less powerful turbo). He started on the 20th (last position) and finished third. If the race had not ended early, he would have won. He trimmed 0.5 sec. by lap to Senna. Yes, I know: Bellof's car was disqualified (Illegal car weight).

For all that say Senna or Bellof should/would have won this race.....Bellof got disqualified so that wouldn't have mattered, and the Toleman team later revealed that Senna's car actually had suspension damage that they said would have seen him retire within 2 or 3 laps.

Much have been said about this race and the fact that by giving half points, because the race was stopped, made Prost finally lost the championship. Who knows what would have happened if the race had been allowed to continue ? Probably the winner would have been Arnoux who was in fourth, remember that Senna had his front suspension with some sort of damage since lap 11 when hit a curb in the port's chicane (which was faster than the current version of the circuit and curbs were taller) while catching Rosberg's Williams and Bellof was disqualified later due to the Tyrrell's affair, and I think Prost had some sort of mechanics trouble as well which would had prevented him to finish the race. On lap 28 Prost was lapping around 1' 55'' which was close to his best lap time in the race, then suddenly he started to lap in 2' 03'', so he deliberately slowed the pace, when he stopped after the red flag, he looks at and tells McLaren's staff about some issue in his front left tire. He had much to lose, knowing at that time that Lauda was out of the race, so he started to wave his hands asking to stop the race. His pace was so slow that Alboreto's Ferrari, which was in 7th and had lost one lap, was catching him and the blue flag is even showed to him to allow Alboreto pass him in Beaurivage. So Jacky Ickx decided to stop the race alleging the conditions were really difficult and dangerous, but the only one who was slowing was Prost. Actually Senna, Bellof and even Alboreto were quicker than him, in the same track. Ickx had raced in Monaco '72 in appalling conditions, so he knew what was about to race in that conditions, but at the moment the race was stopped the first position was about to change, he should have allowed the race to continue until the positions were defined and then stop the race. Prost's request to stop the race had nothing to do with call him a "coward", he certainly was not one and even Ayrton in Estoril '85 asked several times to stop the race. See the differences then, in much worse conditions, Portugal Grand Prix was allowed to continue in 1985 while Monaco 1984 was stopped. It is very difficult not to think that Ickx was very loyal to Porsche and to the F1 interests, they would never allow a team like Toleman to win that race. Senna may have not won the race finally, who knows, maybe because his car's front suspension would have broken or he would have crashed later, but what it's undeniably true is that he was about to overpass Prost in that very lap when the red flag appeared. And Ayrton's race in Monaco '84 was the work of a truly genius which would change the world of F1. He was in a decent car, but was not a top car not even a car which could win a race and this was his first time in Monaco in his 6th race in F1.

Prost wasn't racing Senna, he was racing Lauda, who was his opponent in the 1984 title duel. Lauda was already retired at this stage og the race. Coming in first after having completed only half distance brought Prost 4,5 Points, a second place after the full distance at that time was rewarded with 6 points. half a year later in Estoril, Prost lost the title to Lauda by 0,5 points, so Prosts request for a red flag was to his own disadvantadge (at that time, Alain could not know that Ayrton's front suspension was about to fail, and that Bellof was to be disqualified).

Ironic then , that stopping the race prematurely and denying both Toleman and Senna this victory, cost Prost the championship. Stopping it later and finishing second would have given him full points and the WDC
@TheColinChapman
@TheColinChapman 9 жыл бұрын
spkprobe2 almost, yes. but - Ayrton wasn't denied victory here. The Toleman mechanics later revealed that Ayrton's right front suspension was about to collapse within the next 2 or 3 laps since Ayrton wildly drove over the curb in the harbor chicane on lap 13 trying to attack Keke Rosberg. Which ironically would have made Alain the winner again....ain't life grand? : )

I believe about the same time (early to late 80s), at the Monaco G.P. a pair of drivers were battling lap after lap for either 2nd, 3rd or 4th (maybe lower?). It seemed that each lap they were bumping, interlocking wheels, riding up on each other, finally there was a pass and it would start all over. This went on for what felt like most of the race and I was literly on the edge of my seat, yelling at the TV in astonishment.

Senna scored the best avg speed, the best laps, was faster than anyone on track. Interestingly, Arnoux was known for being a tough racer - and Senna passed him in 1 lap, while Bellof took 6 laps to pass Arnoux. Afterwards Senna still passed the champ LAUDA in his McLaren (brilliantly before the St. Devote) - while Bellof didn't, because Lauda spun off. 1st lap: Senna P9 / Bellof P10. (Bellof right behind Senna by the end of the 1st lap). 3rd lap: Senna P8 / Bellof P10. 7th lap: Senna P7 / Bellof P9. 9th lap: Senna P6 / Bellof P8. 12th lap: Senna P5 / Bellof P8. 14th lap: Senna P4 / Bellof P8. (Senna took 1 lap to pass Arnoux) => *P4 vs P8 on lap 14* ! 16th lap: Senna P3 / Bellof P6. 19th lap: Senna P2 / Bellof P6. (Senna passed Lauda / Bellof did not (Lauda spun off). 27th lap: Bellof P3 finally passed Arnoux (Bellof took 6 laps to pass him). Senna Best Lap: 1'54"334 (Best Lap of the Race) Bellof Best Lap : 1'54"978 Senna, the only driver with avg speed over 104,2 km/h (Bellof: 103,7 km/h) And people still try to fantasize that Bellof overshadowed Senna. (Not to mention the Tyrrell was irregular).
