God this really makes you more sympathetic to Raiden. I mean the guy got sent into a balls out crazy mission without proper training, constantly gets screwed with by his superiors who get increasingly more insane with each passing second, fights an overweight mad bomber on roller-skates from upstate new york, a magical gay vampire and a psychotic invincible angsty chick with a bad taste in clothing, gets sexual assaulted by the president of the united states, gets regular assaulted by a different president of the united states, constantly gets interrupted by his girlfriend who turns out might be spy and who might not actually even fucking exist, wakes up naked tied to a table for no good reason, and has a bunch of weird encounters with a team-killing russian cowboy with a dead guy for a hand. I never hated Raiden nearly as much as the average fan, but the first time I read this comic it gave me a new appreciation for just how hard the poor guy has it in this game. Now I can't help but like him

I liked raiden alot, may seem whiny but he's likable and has a good character development. MGS 2 was a nice break from snake. I mean imagine if you also played mgs 2 as snake. Playing as snake in MGS 3 would not have been as special, it would just be "oh, cool im snale again". besides, raiden's majestic hair and crazy cart wheel flips and back flip-to-handrail grabs were badass enough to redeem his whiny aspects.

The whole reason you play as raiden was to view snake from a different perspective and it worked really well

Raiden is meant to have extremely steep character arc, which basically means you are supposed to dislike him at first. The panning he gets from the fanbase is still an inertia of the very first reception he got. It gets alot better in MGS4 and especially MGRR where he develops alot as a character and carries quite a few strong themes.

MGS2 was the first MG game I ever got, (I know, bad) and playing as Snake was awesome, but everything about his character is pure awesome and is a veteran returning to another battle, but I didn't really know any of what was really going on, so I screwed up a lot. But playing as Raiden, a character on his first mission, being thrown into this mess and completely unprepared, and the first shooter or stealth game I'd ever played, was, I feel, a good combo. Both new to something and freaking out at the lack of correct information from the team or the lack of equipment, questioning what really happened or who was on your side. Everything that happened was just a huge surprise I wasn't expecting, Vamp, Fortune and Solidus scared the hell outta me. So Raiden didn't appear whiny to me, most of his reactions were similar to what I was thinking. So I never developed a dislike for him. And actually, he made Snake look even more incredible to me. Him coming in all prepared and knowing how to hold himself together was amazing and a relief. I get it must suck for older fans who were with the games earlier to suddenly have the switch, but the amount of hate for him seems a little unfair.

Kojima said it's Platinum Games' interpretation, not his. It's uncanon, not only because of that, but because of its development history. It wasn't initially going to have that story. It was originally going to be set in between MGS2 and 4, where Raiden saves Sunny from the Patriots with Paradise Lost Army. But, alas, KojiPro gave the reins of development to a company better suited for Hack-n-slashes, and they butchered up the story, making it a sequel to an already concluded series. -_- **sigh**

Distributors don't have that much control over the actual game development. The distributors only fund..... distribution. Development is different. An example of both being in a games development and distribution history is Nintendo. Konami had no hand in the development of this game other that determined release dates.
