(HD) Watching Airplanes Part 1 - Anchorage International Airport PANC/ANC Plane Spotting

This is Part 1 of my Anchorage, Alaska Planespotting Adventure.

North! To Alaska! I bring you a taste of the aviation magic of America's Last Frontier. I finally made the trip up to America's 49th state not to hunt for bear or moose (although I did see a moose while spotting here!) but instead to film the many various, diverse aircraft that are plentiful in this part of the world.
Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport PANC/ANC is a major airport and mega cargo hub where Boeing 747s and heavy jets are as common as the pine trees and the air is sweet with the fresh of outdoors seasoned with the smell of jet exhaust and hot brakes, ... truly a unique airport with a diverse air traffic assortment unlike anywhere else on earth. Everything is here, from the still operational DC-9 and DC-3 to the Dreamlifter to the KC-135 and versatile C-130.
I've dreamed for a long time about making a planespotting video from Anchorage International Airport as it is one of those airports that was featured in KZbin videos I used to watch that inspired me to try my hand at other locations around the world besides Chicago O'Hare. Many thanks to the efforts of folks like my good friend Rocknroller92 ( / rocknroller92 ) for providing that inspiration and input to ultimately make this video happen.
As usual, I shot all of this without a tripod, two hands only... practice, practice, practice. Even so the stiff, chilly Alaska wind contributes a bit of shakiness to the footage at various points.
Most of the action is arriving and departing PANC/ANC's 10,900+ ft runway 15 and is taken from Point Woronzof, a spot famous with the locals and many seasoned planespotters. All footage taken September 10-12, 2017.
Either unfortunately or fortunately, I picked the days to film that construction crews were busy re-paving taxiway Yankee (Y) so this adds a lot of background noise to the film.

So many 747s indeed! I'm used to large amounts of heavy traffic at O'Hare but this was quite the experience... every time you turn around there's a 747 on final. I tried to film as many as I could but even this was a small amount of the 747 movements that took place for the three days I was there.

Still, Cargolux, Lufthansa Cargo, Areologic, Cathay Pacific Cargo, Singapore Airlines Cargo, China Cargo, EVA Cargo, Emirates Sky Cargo, Etihad Crystal Cargo, and more! A large assortment of cargo arlines with 767 freighters, 747-8 freighters, A330 freighters, 777 freighters, and A300 freighters! One day is only a microcosm of ANC, it offers the best and shortest routing for trans-Pacific and trans-Atlantic cargo flights!

This. Is. Paradise. Anchorage is at the top of my list of airports to visit, 100%! However I may not get there for many years...Vancouver and Boston are more within my reach, but still I can keep dreaming. My reason? 747's man!! There's thousands of them at ANC! ANC is the refueling center for the heavy cargo 747s before and after a North Pacific crossing. I don't have the stats, but it wouldn't surprise me if ANC went through as much Jet Fuel as LAX.

Amazing video! Anchorage has been on my to do list for quite some time now. Incredible variety of airlines & aircraft. Is it easy to access this place to film from?

Sorry for the late reply. This place is certainly well worth it. You will want a rental car for this location and it is a short drive from the city. It is Point Woronzof Rd. On the west side of runway 15-33... there are also moose (often, I saw one while spotting there) and bears (rately) so plan accordingly but generally they mind their business if you mind yours. Many spotting sites detailing spotting at ANC are a good resource

Anchorage is well worth your time and effort spent to do it... do it soon if you do, I'm not sure how much longer some of these unique classics like the Dc-3 and Dc-6 will be flying. The number of 747s and heavies was mind-blowing though ...and that's from someone who grew up at O'Hare where the 747 was common. This location on Woronzof Rd. is the spot to be.

Anchorage truly is a spotting paradise very unique in its color and diversity of aircraft. Here you can see DC-3s and DC-6s and 787s and 747s taxi side-by-side. I truly love this airport as one of my favorites I have ever done planespotting at.

Jay, you did a great job filming one five action. If there's a brisk south wind that's the place to be. In the early am you can film from the east side of 15 and if the heavys are using it for take offs you're close enough to get plenty of jet blast :-). On many days the landing action is over on 7R. There's a great spotting location and I know a easy way to get there. Occasionally there's a moose blocking the trail but I've only seen a black bear once (a mother with cubs) so it's not too bad.

To Waikikilatino 1 - Why so many cargo planes ? Yes, in fact, daytime at ANC, cargo birds do take off almost every 10 min. The reasons are simple : 1. Because Alaska is far out, so air cargo can sometimes be faster, more efficient and more convenient than all road/rail competitors. 2. Because Alaska exports a lot of fresh and frozen seafood products around the whole world, and time has to be reduced as much as possible from fishing to marketing. These cargo can carry fish, shrimp, crab, you name it, to the east coast, to Europe, to Russia, to South America, to the Middle-East and to Asia faster than anything else.

Jay, you don't list Japan Airlines 787 at the beginning of the film. That is a real coup! I live at ANC in the summer and I've never seen that one. I'm curious what it was doing there? Charter or a diversion? Occasionally we'll get new 737 or A320 delivery stopping for fuel but I'd think the 787 has plenty of range for a non stop flight......
