Now you can do the DT880 600 ohm and you've got the "where headphones have been" mid-fi trio finished off. After that you can tackle the "here's where headphones are going next" like Mobius

@The Bishop they are very "dry" sounding meaning quite lean but relatively flat bass with peaky 6k and 9k. Studios tend to like that sort of sounding but I don't find it very enjoyable. Good value in resolution but not my kind of FR

I'm almost scared to put the 880 alongside my 1990 in case it turns out I spent twice the price for no real additional benefit. I would assume the 880 is similar to the 1990 in that its very much a more analytical or critical listening headpohne rather than a more enjoyable or musical one. I'd be lying if I said gaming wasnt one of the primary reasons I bought the 1990 but they really do the business for competitive shooters.

@John Doe as much as I wanted to love 880s , for their build quality and comfort, they have a thin analytical sound and lean neutral bass , while 599 were rich in bass mids ,bigger soundstage more relaxed , build is surprisingly good for full plastic construction . 712 are great I have a austrian made version , it holds up well but ya care is required. 712 will require an amp and yes in my opinion 712 is best of the lot , it's rich in vocals bass is articulate right between 599 and 880 , highs are detailed .

I got these too when living in Japan only trouble these have is that the tiny elastic bands that control the height at which they sit on your head lose their elasticity over time and that causes discomfort for me, they sink down now and pull my ears with them, bugger because I love these.

No se pueden comparar. Tengo los AKG 712 y, recientemente he comprado los HD599. Definitivamente los HD599, son muy inferiores en todo. Mucha menos sensación de espacialidad, graves exagerados y, la verdad, no se nota para nada que sean abiertos. Seguramente me los quedaré para jugar con el ordenador, ya que son bastante cómodos y son muy fáciles de mover, sin necesidad de usar un amplificador. Actualmente, los AKG están a 269 euros (recordemos que según el país, cuestan incluso casi el doble), y los HD599 a 69 euros en Amazon en oferta. Si estáis dudando entre uno y otro (repito para mí no son comparables), id a por los AKG. Son simplemente extraordinarios.

@@pranabmandal777 Bass on the 599 Is not bad, I'm finding them a bit too warm again as I'm more used to leaner headphone. Haven't been able to get my hands on a 560S yet but looking at graphs I'd say I'd enjoy it a lot more than the 599, and if you're looking for better extended and possibly more defined bass I'd say the 560S is the way to go.

I just got the HD 599 se. I already had the HD 558 and they are both very similar. The 599 have a slightly more refined sound and more rounded bass. Great to have both so I can have my friend use one pair and me use the other on my Focusrite 6i6, which has two headphone outputs. I have the HD 280 Pro for when I need to have no sound bleed while recording. Got my HD 599 for 106 gbp.

I have both of them. They both are great. 712 sound stage is better than 599. Imaging on 599 is amazing. They both sound completely different.

@Al Catraz I went with the Sennheiser GSX 1000 as it could power the K712's and also has the utility of being able to easily switch between headphones and speakers via the hardware interface. I haven't even tried the headphones without it.

Great video, but I disagree with many points, I have both and I can see that between these two, it is actually very difficult to decide a winner, comfort is very relative and even more their sound profile, many people would pick one while many people would pick another if they could try test them before choosing, that's why I don't like side-by-side headphone comparison from a single perspective. Now when you add that at least in Europe the HD 599 is 100 euros less, then that's a no brainer choice!

I think I covered that in the video, its not meant to be a be all and end all, its just my opinion as in the UK they are very evenly matched in price when neither are on sale. As always you should never base your decisions on the opinion of one guy on the internet. That one guy is perfectly entitled to share his opinion tho.

You didn't, the all for nothing system is broken, imagine giving points for differences of a few grams. Also the cable comparison is weird cause the second cable for the 599 wasn't even considered. The bag is useless for the k712, looks embarassing (sorry but I really think it is cheap). The sound profile was compared from an obvious k712 preference and that "boomy" feeling can be easily equalised but I prefer it for regular use like movies.

You could try the Beyerdynamic DT 990 though I'd rather take the DT 880 for a more pleasing sound. And the price is even below the AKG K712 Pro! At the moment I don't see any reason to try out the K712 (only based on this rather subjective test)! I was very disappointed by the close back AKG K92 first because it's not very comfortable (I know close backs lack there a little). The sound was also very disappointing therefore my trust in AKG isn't very high! 😛(There were some good reviews on the AKG K72 therefore I thought it cannot be a bad idea to go for the little more expensive K92 ...) Also the Audio-technica ATH-M30x has the same problems and is even worse in comfort than the K92! It seems as if I should try out the Beyerdynamic DT 770 as "my" close back! 😇

Not a fair comparison for those who live in the USA. Best price on the the AKG K712 here is $390 (presently) and the HD 599's can be had for $199. Those in the USA who have $400 to spend on a set of cans should be looking at something in the Sennheiser HD 6xx line, not the HD 599's.

currently have the hd 599. pretty much impressed by the sound quality considering that i'm a bass head before discovering audiophile hp. but my problem is that my hd 599 driver wall touch my ears and it hurts. the padding is not thick and the driver wall is not deep enough. currently w8ting for your review in the dt 1990 to help me in my research in hp around 400 to 600 dollar category.

Headphone reviews are very difficult and most of them are really subjective (like this comparison)! Everybody's ears are individual! What is right for A doesn't need to be right for B! Yes, if you use these open back headphones for mixing like the AKG K712 Pro is designed for (while the Sennheiser HD 599 is not) then you could (and probably should) use the same headphones for the whole team. But here for any individual user the HD 599 could be as well superior to the K712 despite this comparison for example for me! At the moment I'm completely satisfied with my Beyerdynamic DT 880 (250 Ohm) they are only semi-open back but very comfortable and the sound is pleasing at least for my ears! The Beyerdynamic DT 1990 cost much more and I heard in many reviews that the improvements are only marginal but one can notice them! I don't think they are worth the additional costs but again everybody has to chose their headphone upon their own requirements. 🤔

Hmm they are not really comparable, very different headphones. But both are quite easy to drive you could drive them off of anything. Although stay away from any source with a high output impedance. K371 is super easy to drive tho.

tbh this video is 2 years old now, but nowadays the 599 is 130€ and the K712 Pro is 230€ in germany, so this one is a no brainer for me to go for the 599 for now Yeah I purposely didnt choose the 560S because I wanted better build quality in the 599 since most of my headphones crack sooner or later (yeah, even mid-range sennheisers did...)

I own the 599s(the 712 are way too expensive where I live)I used a min.phase conv for file from AutoEQ with EQ Apo and a shelf to reduce the bass a bit and I got much better d definition especially in the bass also reduced the "Sennheiser veil" a little definitely recommend trying the software out if you're on PC on any headphone.

a lower clamping force is always more comfortable? no sir. a good clamp will take the pressure off the headband. My QC35 II's clamp enough that the headband barely touches my head, and provided the pad or driver isn't touching your ear, headband pressure will generally lead to more discomfort than ear pad clamping. in short, a good clamp is a positive.

Oh fair point, I didnt really break it down like in this video. Honestly thats a tough one because they are both great, its a closer match than 599 vs 712. Its probably going to come down to personal preference more than anything. If you do any kind of gaming, the 712 all the way. If you like a refined and relaxed headphone then 650. I think the bass quality on the 712 is better than the 650. 650 has a nicer midrange I think. 712 is brighter in the treble, the 650 smoother. Maybe I should do a 650 vs 712 video at some point.

@@himanshutiwari90 oh I owned both and I agree with the man here. The K712 Pro has nice bass extension (stupidly good for an open back dynamic) and amazing soundstage (best in class hands down, only overshadowed by the HD800). The issue is the rest of the FR. The mid-range is a roller coaster and makes voices sound thin/lacking body. The treble is adjusted to the diffuse field response, so it's not realistic at all. Overall, nice bass, nice soundstage, bad mids and ok treble. The 6XX/600/650 have much worse bass and no soundstage. Amazing how they are open back, yet lack any real sensation of "3D"/wide sound. The AKG completely blow them out of the water in terms of soundstage. Then the mids on the Senns is just reference quality level and so is the treble. In that regard they are miles ahead of the AKG. Comes down to what you like. Good bass and amazing soundstage? K712. Nice midrange and treble? HD600/650/6XX.

BTW the Sundara is a nice midterm (and has the best bass). I would go for that if you can't decide. Watch out for shitty QC though.

As a satisfied HD 598 (the predecessor to the 599) user, I can't help but feel a little bit sad how the K712 swept the floor with the Sennheisers. But I do understand, the AKG are more expensive and they're supposed to compete with the higher end HD600 and 650 (and now, the 660 as well), not with Senn's entry series. One way or another, I have to admit that I enjoyed the comparison. Made me remember that when I bought my HD598, I actually had three options un mind and one of the alternatives was the K712 (third one was Fidelio X2). In the end I went for the Sennys due to buffet reasons. One day I hope to upgrade my rig.

Nice comparison! I don't agree to pleather being superior to actual leather though. Also you really should not put stress on the elastic bands of the K712 pro when storing them, since that will wear them out rather quickly. I personally got used to just laying them down in a safe spot in their amazing bag.

Its sad that pricing on the K712 is all over the place. In the UK the RRP of the HD599 is £179 and the K712 is usually selling for £190 or less so its not all that different here. But even then the HD599 rarely sells for its RRP and is often on sale for sub £120 or even as low as £80-90. I hear that elsewhere in the world the K712 Pro sells for much much more which is a shame, because its a great headphone.

What is meant by "built" though? In terms of durability DT series seems much more solid (based on DT 770) but when it comes to comfort K712 are just light years ahead of everything I wore so far. DT 770 are not bad, better than my M50X, but still no start for K712 .

I use DT770 250ohms personally but they will need an amp to drive you if you plan on plugging your guitar directly into a guitar amp be wary because it might not be able to drive the headphones.
