How I Recovered Data From A Seriously Damaged Solid State Drive
Solid-state drives are becoming increasingly popular due to their high speed, durability, and low power consumption. However, they can be vulnerable to physical damage, just like any other electronic device. In this article, we'll share our experience recovering data from a solid-state drive that was seriously damaged in several places.
The solid-state drive in question was shipped from Germany and had multiple physical damages. After a quick inspection and diagnostic process using PC3000, we determined that the issue was most likely related to the circuit board. This solid-state drive has complex circuitry with multiple layers, which, due to impact, could be broken on the inside, rendering our device non-functional.
There are several ways data recovery on similar devices could be performed, but the most effective way would be by repairing the unit. Luckily for us, our client in Germany had sent in an identical Kingston solid-state drive that could be used for parts. Instead of using it for parts, we chose to use it as a host platform to accommodate memory chips from the patient solid-state drive.
According to PC3000, this Kingston solid-state drive has a rebranded Silicon Motion controller, which usually is not tied to the memory in any specific way. In other words, this controller is generic, and as long as the firmware matches up, it will be able to work with compatible memory chips. We removed memory chips from the donor using our JBC rework station, reballed memory chips from the patient and mounted them onto the donor host board.
As a result, we got a 100% clone and a fully functional SSD, which can now be used again to run a similar system. This Kingston SSD data recovery process was successful due to our team's expertise and the use of specialized equipment such as the JBC rework station and PC3000.
In conclusion, solid-state drives are fast and efficient devices, but they can still be vulnerable to physical and other damage. Was also very surprising to me too, since the controller must have a memory map somewhere to know where on the flash which block of data is located and which flash cells experienced what amount of wear. My guess is that there is a well defined portion of the flash thats always static and where the controller will always look for the said infos. But I'd definitely be interested in the details of it.

I think I'm using too small a heat when Microsoldering as I'm afraid to cause damage. Did you think the same when you were learning Microsoldering. I'm using just the usual AliExpress equipment and guess they aren't as powerful as branded stuff so I should just dial to max and go for it harder with heat.

With that amount ouf damage I wonder, why did you swap missing components first instead of the chips? The board had a significant amount of visible damage.

I wanted to see if the unit would start. Why start by doing more work. Maybe the initial issue was due to missing components. Yes, the board was bent but how would you know if it broke enough to not work. As you could see, the device goes to safemode like it should, it even sees both NANDs connected and all 4 banks show ID. After all it was only 5-6 small caps to move.

I was thinking the same. 6:19 If the board is bent to that extent (the bend radius, not the angle), then glass fibers are snapped, and copper probably too. If not that, some balls of the RAM chip.

Something that I don't quite understand, why did you take components off of the donor board to put on the broken SSD? Not only were components missing, but the board appeared physically bent as well. I thought surely you would have just migrated the data chips to the donor board in the first place. Can you please explain?

Because some times you are lucky and it's only the missing components that stops it from working. Start with the easiest fix!

I get BGAs are more difficult to move, but it seems simpler just to move the chips to the unbent board rather than trying to solve issues with a bent board with components removed. I would have opted to move the data chips over first, and then, if it didn't work, try to fix that bent board. It is far more likely that the donor board would be more functional than the damaged one. Even if you did have to replace the controller chip with it, I still think it would have been worth it to do that first.

@@davidwilkerson1904 It was just a matter of few minutes to check if those few discrete components would solve something or not while working on BGA could take half hour and more. Maybe the author had many cases in his career where soldering missing components did the job.

I'm asking you this question because I'm trying to do a reballing of DDR3 RAMs for training, with the same solder paste listed in the info but, once I clean with the desoldering braid the surface, place the stencil and apply the solder paste to it, when I use the hot air gun, the balls that form on the pads, are too low and some don't form (before applying the solder paste I apply a very thin layer of MG Chemicals 8341 flux on the chip).

Solder paste contains flux, you don’t need to pre apply flux. That thin layer of flux might be getting squeezed up the holes when the stencil is pressed down, partially filling them. So less paste ends up going in to fill the holes
