What many forget these days, is the original track all their equipment was analog - they literally made up much the sounds they used ... Wright mic'd the piano into a leslie speaker cabinet and "that sound" in the opening and ending was born, the seagulls sounds in the middle section was Gilmour's guitar plugged into a vox wah-wah backwards and rocked back and forth - the squealing noises. However when they play together Wright and Gilmour played off each other's creativity so well both in inspiration and musically - when Richard would play a seventh within a chord .. David would come along with his melodic lead line and bend it to an ninth and resolve it to a root, and vice-versa super-imposing harmonies, they set the color in the music of Pink Floyd. Like no second guessing they were in the same mind-frame. Btw… Richard Wright sang the lead vocals on DSOTM's “Time” and "Wearing the Inside Out" on The Division Bell.

I'm 71 next week, and like many other people I find Pink Floyds music brings out the emotional side of me. I have a fantastic family, 4 sons, two beautiful grandchildren (and another on the way!)and a loving wife, but Floyd bring back so many memories of my life, from when I was a teenager through to now. The memories of the sixties and seventies are so vivid at times, and watching this performance with dear Rick Wright and David working so well together, bring those memories flooding back. I find it hard to put my feelings into words, but I watched those last few minutes with tears rolling down my cheeks. Life past can make you so happy, but at the same time so sad. Sorry for being a big softy!!

I appreciate the message of "Comfortably Numb" but at the same time The Wall as a whole feels like Roger's solo effort, that famous David's guitar work notwithstanding. I don't want to criticize anything. The Wall is fantastic in its own right. A monumental work. Each of us has different taste. I think I specifically love Pink Floyd era where Rick's influence can be clearly heard. Animals was the last such album. (Of Waters era of course. He reapeared on the last two albums, particularly on The Division Bell, but I don't consider those Pink Floyd either)

I get the impression Rick was just caught in the middle of Roger and David's feuding. Rick's personality made him an easy target for Roger, and David didn't do enough to stop him from getting the boot (I suspect, I don't know for a fact). After it all went down, David felt guilty about it, and knew Rick really wasn't the cause of the acrimony between him and Roger, and I feel like he has honestly tried to make up for what happened to Rick over the years. Even Floyd's last album, The Endless River, feels like David's way of honoring Rick, and dealing with his pain and guilt over what happened. Of course, this is all speculation on my part - I wasn't there. But either way, I am really glad when Rick parted this world, he and David were truly friends. I have quite a few recordings of the early aughts of David touring, and always bringing Rick along. Gdansk, On an Island, there's a few other gigs out there - all with Rick side by side with David. They even did some of Rick's solo songs on David's tour.
@ubergrendle
@ubergrendle 6 жыл бұрын
you mean Richard who was the only member NOT to lose money on The Wall tour as he was playing a session player? The Richard who says he'd have fired himself as he was too preoccupied with cocaine at the time, that cost him his marriage, and was the wake up call he needed to sort out his life?
@brigand73
@brigand73 6 жыл бұрын
Whether Richard made money off the wall is irrelevant. I doubt any of them were hurting for cash - that's not what I mean by David feeling guilty. Yes, Rick wasn't pulling his weight by his own admission. But Roger was coming to believe more and more that he was the sole reason for Pink Floyd's success, and that he was carrying the band alone - Richard's drug problem made him an easy target. David could still challenge Roger on Pink Floyd's success (Comfortably Numb's solo? Another Brick in the Wall??), but Rick hadn't really produced since WYWH. David, rather than defend Rick's past contributions, and help his friend through his personal problems, let Roger force him out, maybe was even a party to it. And I am sure he felt guilty about it later. I would have. And then we got the hot garbage that was The Final Cut, your album of 100% Roger's creative control.

I was completely amazed. Probably the best from the entire show, definitely for me as I always wanted to get Echoes played at my funeral. Being there was for me one of the musical lifetime events. Something you experienced only once. Something you can't record in any way. I knew that was it, like time stood still and there was only me and the music in my ears. I tasted every note like it was played only for me. Religious folks usually say that was their supreme being. For me that was the supreme music.

We are on the first day of a holiday in Palm Springs, California from London, England. I cannot sleep, its dawn and the wife and kids are asleep. I took my laptop onto the terrace and listened to this watching the sunrise over the San Jacinto Mountains and remembering how effing lucky I am to have grown up with Floyd in my life. Magical - especially the ending of this masterpiece that i never appreciated before and I bought Dark Side when it came out - made all the more poignant with Richard Wright's passing and that Gilmore will not play this again without him. We are but notes that conspire that eventually pass until there's only one left and then only tears.

I don't blame David no wanting to play Echoes without his mate Richard... the two were incredibly in sync mentally, musically, emotionally and I can see it would not be the same. I'm in love with all the song, but what I love the most is the final part. It's amazing how this two legends can have a conversation without any word. For me, this is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever made. This is the result of years of friendship, and it shows us why David can't play Echoes without Richard. You can't hear a dialogue if one of them is missing. Rest in peace, Richard, you will be forever remembered and missed.

PF's ability to almost note-for-note reproduce their music on stage certainly isn't lost here. Love this performance. God rest you, Rick Wright. Each of you boys pretty much musically DEFINED my life.

Not only reproduce, but jam with it, experiment with it on stage and it still sounding exceptional and fitting. At least to me, especially the longer ending part, sounded like spontaneous jamming between two friends to a familiar tune, like they'd be not on stage right now but in a studio to which they're used to, just playing with it, trying things out. These two were in sync.

I have been dreaming of seeing Echos live since "The Division Bell" tour. Echoes is for me one of the songs that had changed music forever. On the Island Tour, Echoes was suddenly played in full length at the end! When the first "ping" came, I thought only, "was that a ping? No David will not play..." and then came the second ping with the chords and it became certainty: Echoes live! One of the most emotional moments in my life. This still moves me to tears today. Thanks to David, Rick and Mason (and Roger) for the music you gave us.

I feel like everyone likes to obsess over how amazing David Gilmour is with his guitar, and dont get me wrong, I think hes one of the greatest of all time, but it's a shame that people like Richard Wright get overlooked for their unbelievable talent. David Gilmour adds to Pink Floyd's unique sound with his incredible guitar skills, but in my opinion, without Rick's keyboard playing and other instruments, Pink Floyd would not be nearly as good as they are. That's why Echoes is one of my favorite songs, it really gives Rick his time to shine and shows how insanely talented he actually is. Richard Wright gives Pink Floyd their unique sound, without him, it wouldn't be Pink Floyd. Rest in Peace Rick, you absolute legend.

Most people are not aware of what Rick Wright's jazz chops did for the Floyd. Take Rick's chords out of the Floyd's music, and not even half of it would have been as beautiful as it was. RW was the unsung hero of Pink Floyd.

It pains me to see Richard getting omitted by the camera in their last gig in 2005 and was treated by the director as a session musician. But we all saw him there, and the passion and power as he stood up to play the keyboard like the master performer he really was. We love you Rick, and your legacy lives on in the songs, even after a decade.

Walked in on my son and a few of his friends. They were gaming and all had headphones on. I asked what they were listening to. Son unplugged and Wish You Were Here. Pink Floyd created music that will be listed to for generations. Certain musicians and songs become timeless. I drop in Beethoven sometimes when the mood hits. 200 years from now, someone will drop in PF when the mood hits.

I like that: "A very real part of me." When I was 13, I hadn't been much into music, but was a sleepless, aggravated and energetic kid with ambitions much greater than my town. So much so, I often found myself in trouble and having addicted parents, raising myself. When the time came to go off to foster home, I had no idea what I was to do with free time and thought now would be the time to get into music. I stole my mothers double cassette, "The Wall" to bring with me in hopes to remind me of "home" and learn music... I've never looked back since. That album, and in particular this band, has gotten me through a very troubling part of my young adult life and is a part of me. It is without a doubt "Avery real part of me." To this day, next to prayer, I look to Pink Floyd to bring my spirit into focus so as to allow me to deal with some of life's most troubling aspects. God bless Pink Floyd.

You are right. There definitely was a chemistry between Richard and David that was most likely based upon their mutual respect for eachother. Something that never occurred with Roger Waters. It was a shame that he had such an ego. But in my opinion, Gilmour and Wright were both supremely talented musicians, with Gilmour easily being the very best guitarist, ever.

Put aside the differences. They did it before in 05. They can't need the money. As so many others, I've been following these guys since 1967. C'mon guys, Covid is ending soon. One last set of shows.

There is no shame at all in getting emotional about this and all the other incredible pieces of work by the very best of the very best, Pink Floyd. I have just turned 71, and I experience all those emotions when listening to their music. And I have the utmost love and respect for them as musicians. Especially David Gilmour. Can you imagine how it must feel to not only be able to play to that standard, but to give so much pleasure to millions of people worldwide. Just perfect.

David and his legendary black strat. I was 16 years old in 1971. I don’t think words can describe the depth of what David is able to do as a musician. When I first heard ECHOES I became overwhelmed by the emotions I was feeling. It was David’s genius and these lyrics to the sacred duet between David and Richard. It was as though they became one. Strangers passing in the street By chance two separate glances meet And I am you and what I see is me The sheer beauty of the lyrics and music of ECHOES transformed me. This masterpiece became my affirmation my prayer at 16 and has seen me through my journey in this life. I have matured and I’m beginning to see the depth and beauty of humanities true greatness. My deepest respects to Richard Wright for all that he gave us.
