It's the usual adult romance novel/Telenovela tropes that are great when done right with great writing and acting, but here it comes off as stupid and extremely contrived. This whole "Reylo type" of shipping can only work if properly handled by competent writers or showrunners. In Buffy it worked very well - as just one example - or even in "The Vampire Diaries" it was done right, but in Star Wars they shouldn't do it at all because it's a classic boys brand and the romance needs to be the classic romance like the type of "Han Solo and Leia Organa" or "Anakin and Padme", not the dark "Kylo and Rey" type of female romance tropes.
@SteveVonBacon5 ай бұрын
Yes, exactly. It's the Reylo / hot Sauron trope all over again. ("I can change him"😂). The bad guy who has deep feelings beneath his outside anger... and he has reasons to be evil, it's probably the circumstances that made him like that, so it's not even really his fault, even though five minutes earlier he murdered countless innocent people... disgusting. And yes, the original trilogy was about redemption, but that came with a big cost, Vader ultimately sacrificed himself and died, which had an impact and created a tragic story. So it's not even remotely similar.

@asumax85 ай бұрын
Yep. Back in the EU, and to an extent in the Pre-Disney movie canon, travel was fairly defined. It would take days or even a couple weeks going from the Core Worlds to the Outer Rim. This could vary because ships may have to use multiple Hyperspace 'highways" to get to certain systems. And as a small counterpoint to what Tyranth said about Attack of the Clones, it wasn't clearly defined but there was an implication of time passing between the travel to Genosis from Tatooine, Kamino, and Corusant

The difference between now & then is now "filler episode" is code for "we don't have to try hard this week" whereas back in the day filler episodes were where all the real character work was done, that way when the plot picked back up you cared more about the characters. Next Generation was always excellent at this, it was the filler episodes where they delved into Ryker's relationships & love of jazz, Data's obsession with Sherlock Holmes or whether an AI should be given human rights, Worfs backstory about how his dad had to take the blame for something that wasn't his fault to stop the Klingon Empire looking bad & that's why their family is dishonoured etc. That made characters feel like real, multi-dimensional people that actually still exist when the camera isn't on them

@@takanara7 I guess it depends on how you interpret or define a filler episode, that's just industry slang that became common over time. Then Hollywood started getting lazy

@@ViolentMessiah666”Filler” episodes are episodes with no purpose at all except to pad out the episode count for a contract. There is no progression on plot, and only minor (if any) character development. At the end of a filler episode, nothing of significance has changed or been revealed. Old broadcast standards were established based on a general 13-week quarterly rotation. 24-26 episodes for a weekly broadcast, or 65 episodes for daily (weekday) broadcast and for syndication. For me the Jedi's actions in the prequels were only showing glimpses of their own failures. Those failures were at best hinted at, they were vague and even for the viewer it was difficult to see if what the Jedi's were doing was wrong or not. Case in point Mace Windu arresting Palpatine. but this show is 87years before the end of Revenge of the Sith. and the Jedi are already showing such arrogance, enforcement of the law and utter ignorance of the high council that it's no wonder Palpatine was able to take over. A literal monkey on the table could do that if this is how the Jedi handled their issues. For crying out loud a Vernestra hears that most of the Jedi's just died, believes it's true and still doesn't go talk to the high council. If this is what we are to believe the Jedi acted like in their prime I'm sorry, but it's utter idiocy. Even if they find a way to write a perfect explanation for all of this, unless it's a literal dream Yoda wakes up from and says; "A shitty dream, that was huh?" I won't consider any of this canon. I've read better fanfic than this nonsense.

all his friends just died, that sorta thing can cloud judgement, but the story writers don't know this so it was just dumb... or Shad's theory that he knew from the beginning? but if that were true he knowingly left the planet instead of stunning Mae and looking for the real Osha before the sith took her, still dumb
@DavidM_105 ай бұрын
@@MadHalflingInventor I could accept that Sol was too shocked and traumatised to identify Mae immediately, but that should have changed when he got back to the ship and calmed down a little. I disagree with Shad that Sol knew all along. The fuzzy little alien with the good nose clearly tipped Sol off. That was his role in the story. And, yeah, Sol knowing all along would be even more stupid, because that would mean he just left Osha to die.

@@DavidM_10 I get that but (and I'm not defending the story writers at all) when your in a survival situation adrenaline keeps your brain sharp until you reach a place of relative safety, then you can crash because of a shock/horror realization of what's actually happened. There are well written moments like this in other movies, but saying this is what happened here would be doing the writers work for them because it's not clearly shown your logic of the fuzzy alien tipping Sol off has to have been what they intended to have happened, because the fuzzy alien discovering the truth lined up fairly well with Sol finding out. but they still didn't actually clearly show the fuzzy alien communicating this to Sol, we just have to assume that he did Also I'm not even sure the fuzzy alien did smell that she wasn't Osha, because he seemed to communicate with the pip droid after turning it back on, so maybe he was meant to have been suspicious and then learned it from the droid? the fact were even having this discussion seriously questions the story writers skill

💡 Lightsaber nunchucks. There's an easy way they could have resolved the time issue. Begin with Coruscant person learning bad thing happened and getting on ship (so they begin traveling). Cut to Sol and evil twin on the planet repairing the ship (may be hours after the battle). Cut to other twin waking up (may be a day later). Cut to Sol leaving planet and Coruscant person arriving (maybe a day and a half after the battle). Cut to twin and Smylo scene. Cut to Sol scene. Also as to the whole individualism vs socialism thing, many better than one. The show shows ONE taking on eight simultaneously, and he does it for his own "survival". So obviously the one is greater than the many, and the needs of the one (to live, etc) outweigh the needs of the many. And notice it's the Acolyte, not Acolytes. It's one, and they wanna make her a girlboss, and (want to) make a bunch of money on it. So they can't even do socialism right. ... OMG I just realized something. Major plot hole. Sol deduces that the twin is evil twin, but she cut her hair and stole her sister's clothes. So why would he think for a second that Smylo took her? He KNOWS evil twin cut her hair and STOLE her sister's clothes. The obvious conclusion here is the twin MURDERED her sister. But he completely looks past that and concludes ah, Smylo (who was presumably killed by moths) has her. Why!?! It's moronic. The number one suspect here would be the evil twin.
@Lemmiwings5 ай бұрын
Sol knows, because he has read the script. And the one is the big evil and the many are the goodies, so socialism good and individualism bad. That's as far as the writers think, I guess.

Here's a what if, because I don't see why he'd just leave the dead jedi like that. He still wakes up from being stunned and calls her by her sister's name and they go to leave. He stops and quietly says "wait." She thinks the gigs up and he knows. He looks back away from her, the camera shows her getting ready to fight ( a fist clench or show the sheathed dagger) he looks at her "I... We can't leave them like this. I need your help" They go back amongst the dead jedi and he bends down and feels the ground and gestures her to do the same ( now I don't know their power levels, but an untrained Rey can twirl boulders so the force can do whatever) He gives a Yoda like speech about feeling the force in the trees, in the rocks, surrounds us, binds us etc etc. time slows for some nice shots of the ground starting to shift, rocks rolling, dead bodies starting to sink into the earth. She has never heard any jedi teachings, only knowing/thinking bad things, they killed the witches, a skewed view by her "sith" master etc (She seems hesitant and conflicted, because hey she keeps flip flopping all over the place so might as well show it and not tell it for once) she feels the ground and the force moving and shifting speeds up with the power of two (the power of manyyyyyyy) She sees some of the random jedi masters sinking into the ground and she almost smiles, like good riddance, but then she sees the girl who was arresting her before. Unblinking eyes staring back at her (opportunity for some creepy shots as the face sinks) She's conflicted again, what if she had just given herself up like she said she was doing? Would she have been killed? As the bodies disappear under ground the lightsabers float above where each are buried and then sink in with them, the emitter sticking above the ground like a small grave marking (also so green lady can find them later for whatever BS reason Disney's doing) It starts to rain and close up shots of rain falling on the ground. The final drop is revealed to be a tear, with the streak still on her cheek. Before he sees she wipes it away and her face stiffens as she gets up. Sol has a moment and thanks her, little bonding moment with what he thinks is the good sister and they leave towards the ship with him in front. Then show some conflict in her again, with looking back towards the graves and back at him and pan down to show the dagger sheathed. Cut to black.

Hyperspace wasn't instant, but it wasn't a matter of days or weeks of travel either. The difference between getting from Tatooine to Alderaan is that she gave the message to R2D2, they went to the planet, got lost, picked up by Jawas, bought, worked for a few days, found Ben, found Solo, found Deathstar. There was a significant passage of time, but it wasn't spent in hyperspace travel.

I agree completely about cortosis--I've often wondered the same about it, and questioned why it's not more commonly acquired by the villain. There was enough for the C.I.S. to plan a smaller line of battle-droids with a cortosis-carapace (which would be a ton of droids and a ton of cortosis, nonetheless: a small line of droids is a lot of droids, but is smaller by-comparison, to my awareness); Cad Bane acquired cortosis-bullets (though they were challenging enough to get and he was aware of enough other Jedi-killing tactics that he stopped carrying them, if I recall properly); and various other malicious-figures across the galaxy used it. I would love to see cortosis be a viable tactic in that universe, but for it to be authentically-rare: for it to be so rare that maybe only a few pounds of it are found a year across the galaxy, and even those take so much to refine that it is not very accessible and takes forever to even make in a finer form (maybe the pristine, unrefined form, while still super-rare and rather-inaccessible, could be a bit more acquirable, but it only blocks lightsabers and is a bit heavier and more unwieldy or challenging to wear; and the refined form, while lighter and capable of blinking-out lightsabers and deflecting blaster-bolts, could be more brittle and more easily-destroyed, shattered by traditional-arms and conventional-damage-it couldn’t stand up to strains such as staves and metal-swords and clubs and fall-damage). That would make cortosis a viable consideration for Jedi and Jedi-slayers, alike, and would be enough for very talented, very resourceful, or very cunning enemies of the Jedi to get their hands on in small levels, and would be enough for potent factions (such as the C.I.S. or the Galactic Empire) to make some special-forces units who use it. That would sufficiently-challenge the Jedi with new opponents, ones other than Sith or witches. Bounty-hunters and Jedi-hunters show that the field is already level if one doesn't play by the Jedi's rules and fight on their terms, but the cortosis would level the playing-field even in open-combat, to a degree (especially if used, or, at the very least, integrated, into weapons, armor, and/or projectiles). I especially loved Tyranth's idea about a cortosis-crossguard. According to Disney, lightsabers are not too heavy for non-Force-wielders to handle, so it would be cool to see a team of typical-people who are super-highly trained engaging Jedi in open battle, and getting a lot of satisfaction in standing toe-to-toe with Force-wielders: guys who were low-key jealous or viewed the Jedi as smug or unfair, and who are personally-invested (even if so in a somewhat-petty and/or evil fashion). I want to clarify that I'm coming up with this based on cortosis as it is, but this is not, to my awareness, the way cortosis is portrayed: what I’m getting at is keeping the base-properties the same, but changing the substance mildly and changing its rarity and integration into the universe substantially.

With the bathing scene, it reminded me immediately of the Sawyer & Kate scene from the first season of LOST. With Sawyer the scene was used early in the episode to convince the audience that he was shameless and degenerate, with no barriers to his methods of manipulation & no fear of consequence ... but this was only to set up the later reveal that he was still a man-child in arrested development who is ashamed of becoming the monster he's hunted, and embarrassed by the easily-manipulated weakling he's become. In the acolyte, the scene is only used to (1) reveal physical, outward scars, and (2) show how macho and fearless Smylo is. Popular media used to be much more sophisticated and anti-mysoginistic -- even while being outwardly voyeuristic. Modern entertainment, in trying to be anti-patriarchy, using the same basic methods, ends up being unabashedly misogynistic.

One reason the “Malevolence” worked so well was that General Grievous was forced to chart a hyperspace route around a nebula in order to attack the Republic hospital station, and it took so long to do this that Anakin and Plo Kun were able to fly through the nebula at sub-light speed and intercept him. All of this despite the ship being very fast, as the impatient Grievous complains. Turns out, the ship had a .5 hyperdrive, the same speed as was revealed to be on the Millennium Falcon - since a freighter having a drive that fast was considered impossible by most - but still he had to stop, change direction, then jump into hyperspace again several times and n order to get the shortest route, a big upside-down horseshoe. It added tension, hoping Anakin could make it in time. In my head, I’ve always assumed whatever field shapes the blade either sticks when slamming into another one (hence the grinding and clashing noises in the fights) or they repel to a point, forcing you to press harder to try and push your opponent away-and is why blaster bolts are reflected without having to swing at them. That, and whatever field contains the blade also repels other blades to the point you can’t push them down the beam and into the hilt of another blade, so acting like an invisible cross guard in a way. Of course, my ideas give too much credit… and are infinitely better than any idea Disney has ever come up with.
