In today’s video, Keith shows us how to properly adjust the track tension on a hydraulic excavator. We demonstrate this simple process on a CAT314E but almost all other excavators will use a similar process. Make sure you adjust the tension on both excavator tracks to get the best performance.

Very informative video! How often do you have to adjust the excavators tracks. Is this a yearly thing or a monthly to do this preventive maintenance.

It varies from machine to machine but it's important to check track tension regularly. Manufacturer spec books will show measurements on how tight the tracks should be.

How do you know what's properly adjusted?.... Is it the tolerance between the track chain and bottom rollers?

I had an employee over tighten the track, how do you release the pressure in order to set it properly?

Ryan, check out about 1:48 into this video and it should explain, basically remove the grease valve with a wrench, where the grease initially went into. You should then start seeing grease coming out. But careful not to let too much out, otherwise you'll need to pump more in. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6uQmGlsYrymp9E

Hey Jon, that information should be located somewhere in the manual that came with your machine. If you no longer have access to it, we recommend calling up your local CAT dealer to see if they can send you one. I disagree with this type of adjustment, those fingers wont give you the correct track tension, you need a straight edge and a measuring tape. You find the specs in the manufacturer's manual.

When u adjust enough tracks on machines. U know by eye where they should be about.

Sorry but that's way wrong. Pretty close end result but incorrect all the same. Straight edge and a tape measure and don't ever stick ya hand in where you did. Dumb people will watch this and lose hands ffs...

I do agree it's not a great idea to stick your hand there. It's very unlikely, but if a line blew, you now have mush for a hand.
