This was written by the prolific song writing duo of Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman and was originally released by the Australian band New World (check out their “Sister Jane” and it’s very similar and has equally confusing lyrics “…before the family finds out just what you’ve done, and holds you at the point of a gun, and that ain’t gonna be much fun” kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2i0mIOIhct_Y6c). It was reported the American equivalent of Top Of The Pops that Chapman had said the lyrics were inspired by Dr Hook’s “Sylvia’s Mother” and, like Dr Hook, you can never be sure they’re not just winding you up with some apparently deep and meaningful lyrics that when you listen closely are not much more than gobbledygook.

I did wonder if maybe the limousine was a bridal car to take her wedding,I really have no idea though ❤❤

No, as I describe more fully above. It was sent by her pimp as she begins her new life as an escort.

Shoulda woulda coulda. Regrets of someone shy who waited too long to express themselves to his neighbour. And where is your empathy, Miss? Hmm? 😝 As for the car, most people that age in the mid 70s wouldn't know what a limo was. Take it to mean a big car. As for smiling, remember he's probably miming. And this was soft rock/pop. They did a comic version of this with foul mouthed comic, Roy Chubby Brown, hence you may have heard or seen the line, "Who the f### is Alice". That was in the 90s. Other songs by Smokie: I'll Meet You at Midnight, and their best one is "If You Think You Know How To Love Me", which was covered by the great Pat Benatar, who went into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, with Dolly Parton, Duran Duran and Eurythmics. There's some more bands to consider right there.

This song is from the mid 70's, (if my memory serves me right.) The big clue is the hair and clothing style. Long hair was, 'in', in the 70's. By the 80's, short hair was, 'in', (for the most part, as far as, 'pop music', was concerned.) Obviously, rock music stuck with what suited it, as far as image was concerned. I suspect Sally, in the song, had the same feelings for him that he had for Alice, and has waited until Alice left the scene, (knowing he was interested in her), before letting him know how she felt about him. I suspect the reason why a lot of people don't come out and ask those they're interested in is to do with the risk of being hurt if they're rejected. The pain of just thinking about such an eventuality is just too much, for some. Young people in particular tend to take such rejection very much to heart, especially if it's about someone they've known and are close to, (physically, as in living next door to them), for many years. Instead, they just hope that things work out in such a way that they will, eventually, get together in a natural way. That things will just fall into place. Of course, there's never any guarantee, especially if the other person has no idea of how they're felt about by the other. Obviously, Alice didn't feel the same way, as she got taken away, (presumably to get married), in a big limousine of all things. Which would have been a huge shock and disappointment after having waited so long. Sally steps in and says, 'I can help you with that', seeing it as an opportunity to lay her feelings on the line, in the hope it's enough to make things happen. You ought to give Slade a pop. They had plenty of hits in the early to mid 70's, and a slight revival in the mid 80's. Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me Mama Weer All Crazee Now Take Me Bak 'Ome Look Wot You Dun Cum On Feel The Noize Why the spelling? It reflected their black country roots, coming from Wolverhampton.

You seem upset he didn't tell Alice his feelings, yet Sally was the same for 24 years....

As an old romantic I can promise you that we men are fragile creatures and we have to accept that we must adore some females - while accepting they are 'out of our league' (most in my case!) Re Smokie, verse chorus, verse chorus, sacharine finalé, I think they did better tracks, but try Nazareth 'Love Hurts' for a gutsy version of a 70's band gojing 'pop' to make some moolah!

Rere, this is one of the rare songs that I have no memory of the song or of the band. I don’t think they were well known here in the states. I am guessing mid 70s from the style of the song. I am with you, I don’t feel sorry for the guy at all.

I was born in 1967, so the happy things of the 70's probably eluded me. Free sex, I guess. Smokie had nothing directly to do with that, but they did have some great songs while I was a teenager! I guess you hated that singer like my mother always claimed to hate the younger guitar player of the Kinks. And have a look at their silly song 'Lola'...
