He Built His Own Grave In The Most Beautiful Place In Ireland

Today we visit Ballynacourty (or Baile na Cuairte) means ‘Place of the Rivelet’. It’s a beautifully peaceful location for a grave yard, but unfortunately the grave yard itself is not in great shape but it has to be one of the most scenic graveyards I've ever seen.
Filled with grass covered vaults and surrounded by mountains, just a short drive from Dingle, making this place the most serene graveyard.
We start at Tom Creans pub, that's still in use today.
I also visited the grave of Tom Crean the unsung hero and Antarctic explorer, Tom Crean who was born in Annascaul in 1877 and was part of three expeditions to the Antarctic, including Ernest Shackleton's infamous Endurance expedition in 1914-1916. Tom Crean died in 1938 and was buried here in the Ballinacourty Cemetery.

My GOD WHAT A MANLY MAN and he was good looking too. I'm wondering just how Tom survived the freezing weather. for sure they didn't have gortex coats or north pole wear. He truly is the meaning of courageous bold and stayed true to his dream didn't he. I never heard of him or learn about him in history class. Sad Tom wasn't born in this day and age and now I'm going to be one selfish and born in the STATES because He could made a heck of a president in 2020 even if he ran on the democratic ticket surely I don't imagine he you crumble and run and hide when times got tough here and I would like to think any man that could stand that journey the freezing cold and all of the obstacles to get there would make an EXCELLENT LEADER . But Im just dreaming as it clearly states on his resting place the SEA WAS Definitely HIS HOME . And I don't know much about your leader pros or cons but ahhh to dream lol

They dont make men like him anymore, i could imagine how tough it must of been back then compared to now the only had wooden boats . Todays fisherman and explorers have metal ice breaking boats they can go as far as needed now. In todays world it is truly sad and depressing, we no longer have heroes to look up to like the incredible things TOM has done and accomplished in his life. Todays teens the next generation has already shown us they are incapable of any kind of responsibility or moving are country forward in a positive way, its very sad when some have lost basic common sense when teens and adults cant even define what a man or woman is. *One thing i do know That is 100% that There Is One Truth One Way and one life. He will never leave you or forsake you, he is there all the time and he is the only one that can assure you of his everlasting kingdom in heaven. We are here a short time as we all can see, this is not our home, heaven is our home and eternal glory with the lord Eternity is forever, all we need to do is repent and belive with all thy heart sole and mind, its a free gift from God.

Tom Crean is a hero of mine. He enriched the lives of everyone who knew him. He saved others and yet was so humble. You could not wish for a truer friend than him. It is SO sad that he died at such a young age. I wish that a statue could be put up to him. May he have eternal peace and happiness.

There is a statue near his pub, I didn't get a chance to find it and the pub was very busy which is brilliant that they have left the name on it

Very under rated fella, true heroes rarely ever talk about their heroic deeds. I actually seen the hut that ernest shackleton died in, on South Georgia Island, thd hut was in norway for about 90 years after Georgia Island was brought Ireland in 2015 to eventually be put on display in kildare, but it got reatored in a the restoration place in letterfrack Co. Galway. I helped manouvre it as it was being taken off the truck after transportation

@@tomsdotter3228 it was in decent shape before it was restored, it was restored exactly how it was when he died in it, sven the fella that owns the Conservation business done a fair bit of research with pictures to try get it as exact as possible, it took about 7 years altogether, it arrived at the restoration place in 2015 and was finished last year. Their was a documentary made about too, shackeltons cabin (2023) BBC, on youtube

I've never heard of Tom, but he certainly chose a magickal place to be laid to rest with his family. The mountain views are what I was born into in South Wales all those decades ago! Beautiful and green, dotted yellow at times with daffodils.....oops, bit off track. Hauntingly beautiful cemetery, moss covered mounds, so much history. Gorgeous location, Tom definitely picked this spot for a reason. It speaks of the awe you get of seeing something very Beautiful for the first time. Time stands still like a photograph, for all the world to see. I remember the first time I passed through the mountains of Utah, and my first thought was, this is where I would like to be, forever. Thank you for sharing Tom's vision.

I can't express HOW HAPPY I am to have found your channel!! Born and raised in Texas but from deep Irish descent and have always been extremely fascinated by anything and everything Ireland!!! My dad completed our genealogy going back to the original 3 brother's that came from Ireland to America. Tom Crean, what a hero 💪. Rest in peace. Loved this video and thank you for bringing a little piece of beautiful Ireland to my home in England. I can't wait to visit Ireland again, especially the west coast (my family originate from county Mayo)
