Having studied, and loved studying some Japanese weapons systems, I appreciated getting a sense of the biomechanics, but also the psychological need for commitment. It's amazing how using movements related to fighting when armed translates to combat while unarmed. The musculature changes related to training with those weapons also change the way you move and hit etc. But the commitment thing I think is probably the lesson that hit me hardest. When people fought with weapons for real stakes, they needed to truly commit to the killing blow. Probing strikes were less important because you risked position, or injury to the lead arm etc. It was about stunning someone before taking them out, and putting the mass and biomechanics of your body, and your intent behind the strike intended to kill - particularly in systems that were developed in times when people fought while wearing full armour. The fight ending strikes that you couldn't and wouldn't just throw willy-nilly, and needed to truly finish your opponent without giving them the opportunity to kill you as they died. It's an attitude I've found doesn't necessarily translate well to combat sports, but a lesson I'm grateful for learning.

You neglected to mention that Umpad and Glover were also business partners as well as the fact that even Glover did change his tune a couple of times after Bruce’s death, namely, claiming he was faster than Bruce or that his speed was more “natural” than Bruce’s during Tracking the Dragon press conference. These claims of Mr. so and so would have beaten Bruce Lee are basically meaningless. What matters is that factually speaking, no one ever dared to proclaim that Bruce was bullshit or “only a movie actor” during his lifetime, and those who did so got their ass handed to them. Some were honest enough to admit that, and many were too egomaniacal to speak the truth.

I think to be respectful to the man that inspired me and millions of others that it should have been made clear 1st of all who and how anyone can "kill Bruce" within 30 seconds. Most of us were left hanging on your last video when you quoted that Jesse said Sonny will kill Bruce in 30 seconds. I knew which Sonny it was because I have known of him and how special, second to none he is with weapons especially with a knife on each hand. It should have been said Sonny would beat/kill Bruce by way of knife or weapons. Even I have a very good chance of killing Bruce if I had knives while he is empty handed, definitely not in 30 seconds tho. Now Bruce wanted to prove how a long twig ( bamboo?) was effective against Dan Inosanto's escrima sticks in that fight scene in Game of Death. What would have been the outcome if Bruce with nunchucks vs Sonny using knives? Who knows! I agree how unique Sonny's foot work and hand speed is very different and unorthodox, but you have compare apples to apples not apples to oranges. Even Bruce packed a gun at times! Lol!

@@francoismorin8721 Yes that was great of Jim Kelly sharing his real knowledge of Bruce's true skills. Jim Kelly is a true gentleman and respectful person. He said he won't name names (although we all want to know!), but he said "They" know who they are! Bruce Lee haters all love to talk $..t and say Bruce never fought and for all that considered his Long Beach exhibition footage his only recorded fight, news that's not him fighting, just showing some of his techniques. Bruce's friend Leo Fong tells of Bruce going to various dojos and gung-fu studios asking to spar their top students and at times the sensei or sifu feel they had to step up to honor their house and accept the challenge, none were even close to beating Bruce. Leo is I believe 91 years old and these were his words. He's still sharp and can be found on utube. I will add to what have been told to me by my father and was known to the San Francisco Chinatown community at the time. There is a Gung-Fu master still teaching in San Francisco. He is a couple of years younger than Bruce and came to the US a year after Bruce. At the time this man was Choi-Lay-Fut practitioner which is a rival style to Wing Chun. He challenge Bruce to a fight, he admitted to my father that Bruce beat him. I believed it was a friendly challenge to test which man's techniques were better, not a fight to the death. This man from what I know never was ashamed and said Bruce's skills were very good. And this is when Bruce was relatively unknown and did not transform to "honesty expressing" himself. My father is no longer with us for me to ask again about this match. I respectfully will not name this Gung-Fu master because he is still alive and this is what I was told when I was a kid, I can't confirm. Hearing stories from Bruce's students and friends of similar stories there's no doubt Bruce wanted to test his skills.

I know you left this comment a while ago but my problem with this is that. I still wouldn’t feel comfortable with a weapon against Bruce. I’m not trained, but even having a weapon I would consider it stupid to go up against someone like Bruce. I keep hearing of these so called “masters” and weapons masters, but the stuff people say about Bruce was he completely broke the mould. The stuff he could do baffled people. You don’t hear this about other masters. You just don’t. So to be honest, this still kind of irritates me. I forgot all about this until just seeing this again. I think people forger, Bruce’s thought process was basically “how would I take this guy out if he had a weapon and I didn’t” that’s pretty much how he trained in general. This is why, also because of its superior mobility, he implemented fencing mechanics and footwork. To cover the distance quickly and get out quickly, and everyone who sparred with him all say they couldn’t do anything to him. Bruce would more than likely try to find a weapon, but I don’t think people know how fanatical he was. He was easily training more than anyone else, putting more repetitions in per week than anyone else, and he could be shown something and then within a week do it better than the person who showed him it. I’m always puzzled when I hear people who loved and admired Bruce say things about him later on, but then also say he was the best I ever saw. I just don’t get that.

I remember watching sifu Adam from Greeneville Academy on utube tell his story about asking Ted Wong why JKD or Bruce did not use, teach or incorporate knife work. Adam said Ted responded with this look as if what do you mean? Ted explained JKD is based on knife/sword movement. Ted explained Bruce's theory is the forward approach and footwork is your hand being the knife/sword. Bruce had really studied and found how efficient fencing techniques are and incorporate it to his system. I believe Bruce had given and taught Ted Wong his purest philosophy of JKD as you can see in Ted's seminars heavy with boxing, in and out footwork like a fencer. So that being said, what is more effective, constantly moving, turning slipping angles or moving forward and back squaring off your opponent utilizing a triangular base continuing in and out and minimizing unnecessary movement?

Jesse's comments are rather silly, in fact stupid, to be honest. It is apparent that Jesse is referring to Sonny killing Bruce using weapons. No one said that Bruce cannot be beaten by anything or anyone. Heck anyone of us can kill Bruce or Sonny with a gun. So what does that prove? We are talking about empty hand street fighting. In the area, Bruce would have killed Sonny. Heck, even Inosanto would have killed Bruce if they fought using weapons. Even James Demile and Jim Kelly are on record saying no one could touch Bruce in an all-out empty hand street fight. You can find those clips on youtube. So I think it was stupid for Jesse to say something so childish.

The o ly way to know is for Bruce and umpad to put it to the test but that's not possible so these types of conversations have been spoken about for the last 40 years one who could beat Bruce and so on and so forth
@francoismorin87213 жыл бұрын
Here is what I wrote. Enjoy! Was Jesse Glover speaking about Bruce Lee without weapons againts Sonny Umpad? Was Jesse speaking about the Bruce Lee of early twenties or of the one of his late twenties? I mean I got my ass kicked by my sensei when I was 14 years old, but it would not happen now, well not with much efforts and luck to the level have both reached at the moment. I also got my ass punched when I first entered a boxing ring, but it went better for me the next time. SO who is Jesse Glover talking about? I trust more the opinion of Jill Kelly because I believe he was a much better martial artist during Bruce Lee was alive and see what he has to say in this short public speak. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHS8ea2fbM93fZo Titled Jim Kelly talks about Bruce Lee's Sparring Ability I am convinced that Sunny Umpad was a master. There are more than one person that achieve a mastery level in their martial arts practice. Bruce was not the only one!

Bruce did like to keep in touch and train with many champions of his time.

@francoismorin87213 жыл бұрын
@laurence holden You are right on that one. But I quote Kelly's intro on the subject in this interview: "I fought with the best. I trained with the best. I know great martial artists and there has never been anybody in my opinion like Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee was unbelievable." He seemingly had eye witness then. Because he said he knew stories. And put it this way. If Kelly was a champion. Why on Earth would he debase himself saying Bruce Lee was a step above. Chuck Norris always staid quiet about which man was better. Everybody talks like they never sparred with Bruce Lee. I doubt that. They always say: We played a little and exchange. I think some people had carreers to protect, or their ego. Why would from all those those karate champs form that era would only Kelly talk about those sparring training? He says it clearly he does not want to mention names out of respect. And I don't believe he was necesseraly speaking about Norris. He trained with Joe Lewis, Mike Stone etc. I have a feeling Kelly experienced something with Bruce that awed him to speak like this. BUt he is dead now, so maybe it will stay a mystery.
@francoismorin87213 жыл бұрын
@laurence holden At this convention he clearly states :" And I am not only talking about the actor. I am talking about a martial artist that knew his stuff... I know people Bruce Lee sparred with. They won't tell you." He says he has more respect to tell for these marrtial artists to tell names. I really don't believe that Jim Keely was that much poor or a sucker to lie in conventions. It is like so much martial artists going on saying that Gene Lebel would kill Bruce Lee in a real fight. Even his former friend Bob Wall is going on telling this nonsense. You have to say Bob Wall was both friends with Bruce and Gene. I think this is because of the myth that BBJ is so unbeatable due to UFC craze with the Gracie family. I mean they are amazing on the ground fight, but BBJ being the supreme art is a myth. Same goes with Gene Lebel. So yes he was great and basically invented MMA when fighting a boxer who challenged other martials artists, BUT he was no Bruce. ABout the Gracies BJJ, did you know about Kazushi Sakuraba nickname the Gracie Hunte. He faced all the brothers and won on a fair match. Go check out his story kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKPSfZRno62Kj9E I am tired of people trying to diminish Bruce Lee's abilities. Same has the Gracies he was a man, not a myth. But in his game, he was great. Of course if he jumped on the ground with Gene Lebel or a Gracie he would have been gone... that is if he did not get to bite or poke an eye in time to survive. So it all comes to this. If you have a knive expert against Bruce or anybody for a fact, I bet on him. And this does not mean he might still lose the fight. A kick is a very long weapon. The fighter might get injured by the blade, but might still win the figt. I have a true story about unarmed against blade. There were 2 security guards in a mall. They intercepted a violent individual armed with a knife. The first guard one was a brown belt in self-defense techniques and the other a yellow belt in tae Kwon Do. The brown belt got stabbed and the Yellow under adrenaline belt kick the armed man and finished the fight. True story told to me by a guy that knew both brown and Yellow belts. Maybe I am like Jim Kelly on the story. Being told a story from first witness or confident is not as relliable. But I will take a guess about Bruce and say that there must be some truth behind all those stories and that he was not just an great action actor, but also a great martial artist.

Bruce Lee has street brawls in Hong Kong with other teenagers. He never had any professional martial arts bouts. And in America he had exactly one fight against a local Chinese martial artist, and everyone who saw it describes it as a sloppy mess between two men who didn't really know how to fight; which is true of most confrontations between traditional martial artists. It was that fight that made Bruce start creating the concept of JKD because he realized Wing Chun was not an effective fighting system. Bruce Lee had exactly zero fights against actual trained fighters. Except technically Gene LeBell, which wasn't really a fight. LeBell picked Bruce Lee up and walked around with Bruce on his shoulders and Bruce couldn't do anything about it.

@@JKDVIPER "you obviously think mma is where it’s at" In terms of creating complete fighting systems, yes. "check out ufc 1" Where modern MMA still didn't exist. The very concept of MMA was still in its infancy. "watch a traditional martial named guirard destroy a giant with pin point striking" Are you talking about Gerard Gordeau? Who was a friggin' mixed martial artist? He started was already a championship level savate fighter (i.e. a friggin' kickboxer) and fought in competitive karate, but he also learned wrestling, judo and boxing. If you're talking about Gordeau, and calling him a "traditional martial artist" then you've just outed yourself as not knowing ANYTHING about what you're talking about (aside from the fact you got his friggin' name wrong). "jui jitsu is a traditional martial art? Wrestling is traditional?" Not really, no. Both of them are living martial arts that are continuing to be actively refined and modernized as times go on. Much like boxing or kickboxing. Traditional martial arts is a label that is applied almost exclusively to Chinese styles (although there certainly is a lot of bullshido from other parts of the world) where the martial art is essentially synonymous with a dead language; techniques are learned by rote, with very little in the way of practical application and what we have today as largely a derivative of whatever these styles MIGHT have looked like when they were first invented, because nobody has actually practiced them in combat for generations and actually know what they're supposed to look like (or if they were ever effective in the first place). Kung fu is almost completely functionally useless. And most 'masters' in traditional martial arts have never been in a real fight in their entire lives. There are some attempts going on to modernize kung fu (sanda being the most obvious answer), but they're not really rescuing kung fu from bullshido. "Bruce Lee developed a genius street fight style that I do myself actually.." Ah! That must be why we see so many people claiming that JKD is their fighting style winning full contact martial arts tournaments, right? I mean....right? That happens a lot, right? I'm sure it's happened....once? No? Not even that? Wow. It's almost like JKD isn't so much a genius fighting style developed by Bruce Lee as it is a con-job executed by people trying to ride Bruce Lee's coat tails and make money out of gullible Bruce Lee fanboys.

Very insightful. My own personal feeling is if the art you practice does not include weapons it's not a martial art, it's a combat sport, Doesn't mean it isn't good, but as you say serious weapon work changes the reality...changes the way you look at what you do and why you do it. Also to defend against weapons you need to understand weapons so even if you don't plan on carrying a weapon due to the environment or local laws, if you feel that facing a weapon is a possibility you need to study it. If you study the CCTV footage of violent crime a lot of it is with knives, the people committing the crimes are not very well trained but they will still kill you if you do not understand the knife. Unlike fire arms which are relatively rare in most parts of the world, knives are everywhere.. you can walk into a dollar store or equivalent, anywhere in the world, and buy a kitchen knife, and you're armed. People who are focused on self defense in their training need to understand criminals know this. Great set of interviews thanks!

I honestly think that people who deify Bruce Lee and pretend that he was some kind of fighting god actually DIMINISH Bruce Lee and his accomplishments. The man is one of the people most responsible for creating the concept of modern MMA - he didn't invent the concept but he certainly brought it to mainstream attention and inspired generations of martial artists that would follow him. Could Bruce Lee win a fight against a modern pro? No. He wouldn't have a prayer. He wouldn't have a prayer against the pro-fighters of his own era, let alone this one. Any pro-boxer of any weight class would crush him. But people who want to deify Bruce Lee and act as though he's the greatest fighter ever are completely overlooking what he actually DID to and actually DID contribute.

To me this is a non comparable situation. Bruce was a body fighter and that was his main focus. Though I accept his work with nunchaku. Still was only a small bit of what he studied. Sonny from what I see is all weapons. Idk? Am I missing something?

If Bruce does anything in real life like he does things in his movies, I can just see him pull out a set of nunchucks from the back of his pants when someone pulls a knife on him… And when he does that, all I can say is “good luck!” 😎

Eh.. Jesse is talking about Bruce when “he” knew him, so I’m guessing bruce was in his early/mid 20’s. Not Bruce at 32 or in his late 20’s/30’s. So that’s not a fair assessment. It’s also an opinion.
@shamounian3 жыл бұрын
and I am sure he meant kill Bruce with weapons. No one said that Bruce cannot be beaten by anything or anyone.

@@shamounian right, exactly this. I’ve been a fan of Bruce for a long long time now, and I’ve heard enough and read and seen enough, in enter the dragon and his other movies to come to the conclusion he wasn’t just good. He was genuinely exceptional at unarmed combat. I think he would give anyone problems, big problems. Was he unbeatable? Probably not, but, I bet if you beat him you’d end up missing an eye or seriously hurt, maybe even worse. Bruce was really brutal. I’ve heard that he had no problem hurting people if he was pushed and angry. He had no problem breaking someone’s leg etc. Bruce wouldn’t hold back and a lot of people don’t have that killer instinct. He clearly did. In fact I can see Bruce getting in trouble if it was a life of death situation because I really think he would kill someone, not to mention he carried a knife and gun the last few years. There’s no way this sonny guy would beat him in hand to hand combat. No chance. But even weapons, Dan Inosanto said he showed Bruce kali sticks, and nunchuckas and within a week he was better than Dan 🤷♂️ so what’s really going on here? Bruce seemed to be gifted, as well as obsessed with training. He got good at everything he did and he got good quick, so that’s unarmed combat and weapons training. So is this really being fair? Why don’t we give Bruce some weapons and then see how well sonny would do? Regardless. It’s just opinion but this sort of statements are just opinion. From what I know Jesse didn’t even hang out with Bruce during the 70’s and I don’t think they were even in contact, maybe not even in contact during the late 60’s. It’s hard piecing all this information together. It takes ages and you can’t just go to one source and get all this information on Bruce regarding time frames and training etc. It was stupid if Jesse to say stuff like that. Seems like a backhanded thing to say about his friend and Sifu. Then again, it seems a lot of people in Bruce’s life said things to his face but others behind his back. Plus anything said about him in his mid 20’s is irrelevant. His skill level was at his peak at 32. Yes he wasn’t at his healthiest during that time but from a skill point of view 32 was his peak and Jesse isn’t talking about 32 year old Bruce.
@shamounian3 жыл бұрын
@@axelstone3131 fact is Bruce was the best and the most influential martial artist of all time. That’s why no one will be talking about sonny or Joe Lewis, not even Norris. But they’ll always talk about Bruce. It’s sad he died too young since I would love to have met him.

@@shamounian good sir, Jesse's comment was not childish at all. Bear in mind, Jesse trained with and personally knew both Bruce and Sonny Umpad, we did not. Jesse held both guys in extremely high regard. Jesse's comment simply showed how much he respected Mr. Umpad's skills. Jesse always praised Bruce as an incredible fighter as well. Let's not forget that the core lesson from the comment was originally to point out, every hero also has heroes, and no matter how high level one feels that they've become, there's always more room for growth and skill. RIP to Bruce, Jesse and Sonny... they were all amazing masters.
@shamounian3 жыл бұрын
@@AztecUnshaven it’s childish in the sense that to compare a master of weapons with a master of empty hand is silly. On an all out empty handed fight Bruce would demolish Sonny. Even Jesse said Bruce was the best fighter he’d seen. So for him to talk about Sonny killing Bruce is disrespectful since I can kill Jesse in 10 seconds of you give me a gun.
