THIS STORY:
On November 24, 2009, John Edward Jones died in the Nutty Putty Cave after being trapped inside for 28 hours. While exploring with his brother, Jones mistook a narrow tunnel and became stuck upside-down in an area measuring 10 by 18 inches, around 400 feet from the cave's entrance. Jones was held in place like a hook, unable to move without causing serious harm due to the bends his body was placed in. A large team of rescue workers came to his assistance but were unable to retrieve Jones using a sophisticated rope-and-pulley system. A pulley failed mid-extrication.
Plans to remove his body were called off due to the high risks. The cave was subsequently sealed off, and is now his tomb.

The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

For those who weren`t able to read the plague at 18:40 it says: John Edward Jones On November 25, 2009 our beloved John passed away at this site. He was a loving father, a kind husband, a loyal son and a true and cherished friend. Those who knew John best will remember his faith and his caring heart. Thank you John for showing us how to make eternity our covering and our rock and our salvation as we journey here on earth. We miss you and love you always HMMS 1983-2009

This is an extremely sad story. It reminds me of the one and only time in my early 20s when I had a spelunking friend talk me into going cave exploring with him and some of his caving friends. I am a big guy (6'5) so when we got to the first "restriction/constriction," I immediately said "nope, not doing it." I ended up hiking back to the cars and waiting 8 hours while they explored the cave. Needless to say, I never tried anything like that again.

I live just about 20 miles from Nutty Putty caves. My dad went there several times growing up. It was always a popular activity for scout troops, and my troop talked about it several times but always ended up doing other activities instead. This tragedy happened before we had a chance to go down there. Such a sad tragedy, I remember tuning in to the updates about the rescue operation and being sure that it was just a matter of time before they got him out... sadly it just got worse and worse. It's hard to picture a more horrific and drawn-out death. May he rest in peace.

@@capc996 tbh 2009 wasn't like a hundred years ago, there was still the same capabilities and technology. I guess it's easy to say couldn't they of done this , done that , why didn't they send in a crane with a bulldozer or used a large drilling machine or even explosives etc etc, but you have to remember some factors, for one John was stuck upside down - his body was against natural balance and under strain giving rescuers shorter time frame before his body started to struggle, plus the positioning he was In too - the tight tunnels barely enough space to lift your hand end to end expecting him to navigate his body backwards from an upside down position is bad enough but then the added tight crevises and gaps backwards by a guy already stuck for hours with hardly any energy and draining physical stamina bending his legs and torso which he would of had to do himself was just alot to expect, his body was slowly drowning on its own fluids, internal organs were on over drive especially the heart and lungs and his brain would of been almost drowning too let alone his cognitive responses, time frames it took just getting to John through the cave tunnels and crevises was atleast 50 mins to an hour and only one rescuer at a time then to return back and swap over another rescuer that's another 2 or more hours and also the time it would take for anyone getting to Nutty Putty cave site in Utah, the caves would of been limestone and tough rock granite too which would take many hours to get through jesus everything was against the guy had nothing on his side whatsoever.

I first heard of John's death only earlier this year, it is the most disturbing story I have ever heard other than holocaust and historical events, the first picture you show of John haunts me and I wake everyday and stretch out and immediately think of John and I thank the heavens for my life and another day on earth, 27 hours and he knew himself in the first 5 seconds he was doomed if he didn't get out of there soon. I am glad now that I know of John, any human with a heart would shed a tear for someone they didn't know and never met who net their end in such a way. I cried buckets and had nightmares for weeks and told everyone I know about John Jones, it effected me that much. May he rest in peace.

It is amazing the power of the fear of embarrassment. He kept going rather than stopping because he reasoned there was a good chance he would emerge in a large cave and could turn around rather than stopping, admitting 'i am in trouble' and at the very least sought advice from experts before doing anything else. He was probably thinking 'i am not going to be rescued that would be so embarrassing'. Pride is the sin of the admirable.

Why can't people understand that cave is the grave of a young man and that they should not degrade a grave
@truneilson
@truneilson 2 жыл бұрын
I can see this both ways. As a college kid almost every person I knew had been to Nutty Putty several times... it was they free place to go and something wholesome to do. Lotsa dates went here... it was a normal hangout. Years later when I was on Search and Rescue I heard about it all the time... weekly or more they were calling out Search and Rescue to help them get out. It was expensive and very time consuming. I know people here and just hearing about this place as a tomb... but its kinda like closing the local mall cause someone passed away there. They did first close off the tube he was entombed in (I believe they put a plaque over it inside but shamfully people would not leave it alone and broke in). They also had officers guarding it 24x7 for awhile keeping people out of the entire cave system. Some people even thought Josh Powell hid Susan there... that was impossible.

This was one of the few feature films that I just couldn’t make it through. Since the publication of Shadow Divers I’ve read every book on the market that takes the reader into North Atlantic wreck diving, Florida cave diving and everything in between. Even having absorbed those dozens, if not hundreds of claustrophobic tales, I just couldn’t get trough the film. The craziest part? I was a Set Dresser, Art Director & production designed in Hollywood for 15 years. I know exactly how they shot the interiors of the trap (coffin locked steel deck that separates) and it was still too uncomfortable to deal with. I pray God received John’s soul. The one bright element about some of the most tragic slow-death stories is the victim has time to make it right with the Almighty. None of us knows our hour or day. Seek the Creator while there is yet time. I pray the peace that passes understanding on those who survive this young man. Especially his wife & children.♥️ John 14:6

As a Utah caver, this story is a complicated one. Overall, Nutty Putty Cave was considered a beginners cave and had a low number of hazards compared with many advanced caves such as Main Drain, but in order to keep inexperienced cavers safe, it had the strictest rules of any cave in the state. In order to get the keys to the cave, you had to either go with an experienced caver or be a very experienced caver yourself. You also had to promise to stay on the map. John and his brother lied about their experience to get the keys and choose to overestimate their skill when they left the map to explore areas they didn't have permission to be in...and it cost John his life. This is a story that will never be forgotten by the Utah caving community. Just like as it will forever scar the members of the Timpanogos grotto who were the keepers of the cave and led the rescue. I just hope that John's tragic death can help prevent others from making similar deadly choices while underground. Thank you for sharing this story with those, who might not otherwise hear of it.

Ron, you might be interested to know that a man called Dale Green was the first person to explore these caves in 1960. Imagine that; being the first to delve into a crawlspace not knowing what was ahead and if you could turn around. Regarding the John Edwards Jones incident he said the following: "That's the only dangerous place in the whole cave , I think they can do something to just try and prevent people from getting into that section. I'm really not for sealing the whole thing." "(in 1960) I got down enough so my feet weren't quite sticking up the hole, and I realized I couldn't back out of this. There was no way to push, and I couldn't get a grip with my feet. I was slanted upside down and started to get a little worried." He had to get a friend to pull him back out. "He (my friend) kept pulling and pulling and finally I just popped out and I never went back to that section again." My deepest sympathies and condolences to Johns family.

I agree that this cave was just a death trap waiting to happen and they should have kept it shut down in 2007. I can understand wanting to explore caves that you can easily WALK in and out of, but crawling into such tight spaces and risking getting stuck, and so deep in a hole too, I will never understand. Imagine someone going alone in there and getting stuck and not be able to cry out for help because you’re too far in and no one’s around.. Anyone can tell a story, to some, it's just words. But,....when you tell a story, the word's become emotionally and physically real. You bring people to that moment in time where all thoughts and feelings are engulfed with everything you're saying, a good story, or a horrific one such as this, you can't help yourself but to follow you too the end. I felt myself holding my breath, I started to feel anxiety as you walked closer to this cave. Once you ended the video, you showed his picture then played that beautiful music, I broke down and cried. Not many can pull stranger's into a story. To emotionally grab people into that moment with you takes talent. For one's that live these adventures through you, which are many, we thank you. You have quite the adventurous spirit. Without intending a direct comparison, this tragic story reminded me of that of George Herbert Leigh Mallory, a British mountaineer who was last seen on June 8, 1924 on Mount Everest. Just like John Edward Jones, he was married, dad. A passionate, determined, an adventurer. The story of John Edward Jones obviously moved me and if it's still allowed to express it, I hope that his wife and his 2 children will remember him as we see him with this smile and this pride that is emerge from his photos in its memory.

There are several married people on Everest ... I guess the adrenaline comes before the marriage!

Recently watched another video about this and one of the most gut-wrenching parts was that the rescuers ran a line down to where John was stuck that allowed his wife to talk to him. One of the last things she said to him was that she knew he was tired and to take a break (from the pulling & struggling), then get back to it when he's rested. According to the story, she was still optimistic that they'd rescue him, but he went unconscious shortly after that. That was the first I had heard of this story and it made me sick to my stomach. So tragic. The photo of his feet sticking out of the hole is hard to look at.
