The story about John Jones and Nutty Puddy cave always makes me so anxious and sad. This is the first time I’ve heard in detail about how they actually tried to get him out. Something I’ve realized listening to Mr Ballen’s stories about people getting stuck: if you have to take a deep breath to try to get through something, you’re already f*cked.
@Biomess1 Жыл бұрын
There is another video on it with a lot more details and pictures, it's long though, maybe 45 mins, i will post a link to it if i can find it again. It even has a map of the cave, so you can see just how small that section is and how he would have had to bend to get to the point he got to. It's pretty anxiety inducing, and the rescuers tried so hard to get him out, until they realized it was hopeless, yet they still kept trying.

I've lived near the coast, Malmö. I've never experienced that, or been told so. Still, I know, if nature behaves odd - it's a sign of danger. Like one story I was told by my former neighbour. She and her husband were out picking "molter" (Norwegian word, sweet wonderful berries that are exclusively found in or very near swamps) one day. A bit cloudy, but that's typical for autumn weather. Her husband decides to go to a different location, so they can pick berries more effectively. After about half an hour there is a sudden silence. The birds, everything, silent. And there is an odd feeling in the air. Something was very wrong. She wanted to go find her husband, but she couldn't leave either, in case he cam... and he did, just a few minutes later. He came running, and said, "WE HAVE TO LEAVE! NOW!". They ran, with their berries, to their car, and got home safe. No spirits, not dark mysteries. But the day after, they read in the local news papers that a man had been killed by a bear, not far from the area they were picking berries at. If the forrest suddenly goes quiet - you are in danger. If nature suddenly changes, if something really unusual or odd is happening in nature - BEAWARE.

Mine did too. I saw footage of the 2011 tsunami and it was terrifying, swallowing up swaths of land and sometimes people so fast. It gave me nightmares. Many lives changed or lost that day. And I did a bunch of research about tsunamis because that’s how I deal with anxieties, I learn as much as I can. Of course, I live in the Midwest USA about as far away from an ocean as you can get, so unless I visit a beach, I only have to deal with tornados.

I'm really surprised that in the huge crowd on the beach in Thailand no one recognized the signs of a Tsunami. I remember reading about them on a standardized test as a child and committed them to memory, because you never know. I always thought this was fairly common knowledge. So sad so many people died for lack of that information.
@olivier-pierredebelmont.3630 Жыл бұрын
Everybody knews....Everybody.
@BlueCyann Жыл бұрын
Definitely not common knowledge. I'm not even sure why it seems to be so to you or to me, because "tsunami warning signs" isn't exactly a curriculum item in schools around here. You had that random reading comprehension passage; I read a ton in general, maybe some other people pick it up because others talk about it -- but if you don't know, you don't know. Certainly the fact that the Indian ocean is not prone to tsunamis and hadn't seen a major one anywhere in a very, very long time contributed. I remember a story of one European girl somewhere in Thailand who did know, and warned her parents and the people around her, but her parents themselves had no idea. Even now people who talk about it in comment sections like this don't necessarily know as much as they think they do. For instance that tsunamis aren't just one wave but many, and the first may not be the biggest; or that the water withdrawal doesn't always come first -- the wave might. So those people could hypothetically find themselves victim to a tsunami one day despite thinking they know what they're dealing with. Water recedes, let's go rescue people and see if our car is in one piece -- why are those stupid sirens still wailing?

John’s wife ended up giving birth to a son and she named him John. But honestly, if John was going to die anyway had they left him, why NOT take the risk of shock to get him out? Then even if the shock did kill him, he’d have been free of the cave. And the pulley system they rigged apparently DID start working and John was actually moving, but one of the pulley’s failed and John was dropped back into that little tunnel even further than he had been originally. Either way, that’s a horrible horrible way to die and the reason I would never go spelunking myself unless the cave has huge caverns without tiny little tunnels you’d have to get through to reach them.

What's terrifying about John's death, and I sincerely apologize if this upsets anyone, is that the pulley system that was set up to get John out of the tunnel ultimately failed him. He slipped out of it, and after being upside down for 27 hours, this is the fall that ultimately caused his death. Even in this terrifying situation, he was able to joke with the people who tired to save him. He was wearing jeans and the first responder said that in order to make a little more room to try and get him out, she would have to "remove his pants", to which John replied, "fine, just don't tell my wife". From every video I've seen about this, John seemed so lovely and so much fun to be around. What happened to him is so sad.

Just wanted to clarify something that has bothered me for years now - The side tunnel that John Jones went through was well known to at least several members of the local caving grotto, and it was known to be dangerous because at least one veteran caver had nearly been stuck there before. They decided that the best way to deal with this hazard was to... leave it off the cave map entirely, and hope that no one noticed it, and if they did, that they would somehow know not to enter it. This omission is also why there is so much confusion in the media about where in the cave he was stuck. Certainly, Mr. Jones's decision to push it head first despite having no first hand experience with the passage was a primary contributing factor to his tragic demise. That said, if you go watch the video available on YT of a passage through the Birth Canal tunnel, you will see that at times it is so tight that you are basically moving with just your fingers and toes, and this is where Jones thought he was at. I leave it to the reader to decide if a clearly marked hazard on the cave map may have changed the outcome of this situation. I find it worth noting, that Nutty Putty was viewed as the state's "sacrificial cave", which means it was a cave to direct novice and casual cavers to so that the more interesting caves were left pristine for experienced cavers. Members of the area grotto have been very vocal that the cave should not have been closed after Jones's death. It also seems worth noting that this group controlled all access to the cave at the time of the accident, and were supposed to be vetting the experience levels of groups. The cave access manager, Michael Leavitt, has been by far the most vocal that John wasn't lost, that John should have been able to tell this was a less trafficked area of the cave, that he and his brother made horrible decisions, that John was a thrill seeker trying to discover new areas of cave, and that leaving the passage off the map, and not marking it inside the cave itself, were the best ways to help cavers avoid it. I also wish to note that the volunteer cave rescuers, including Ms. Mattola, and Ryan and Dave Shurtz, acted with extreme heroism. Ryan sustained a serious injury when the rigging failed, and Dave reportedly went partially down into the crevice with John in one last attempt to free him and verify signs of life, which sounds absolutely impossible, and was just one of many selfless acts that day. Nutty Putty was not viewed as a dangerous or risky cave. Everyone in my neighborhood had been through at least once, for church youth group activities. That ought to say all you need to know about the perceived risk of exploring the cave, and tens or hundreds of thousands of people had been through safely over the years. It was assumed that every inch of it was explored and mapped. John Jones did not set out that day selfishly disregarding risk, or have any inkling that his children would lose a father, as so many internet commentators seem to enjoy suggesting.

What a dumb decision to not mark a dangerous zone on the map. It's a shame they weren't sued for negligence.
@doc_sav2 жыл бұрын
@@clad95150 I think it was a very poor decision. They also considered placing a placard at the entrance to that passage, but declined to do so because it is a "wild cave" (technically true, but it had so much traffic and so few geological features that practically that is an excuse). I think what really gets my ire is that the cave access manager went on a media campaign for months where he asserted that Jones was well aware that he not near the birth canal / aorta crawl, that it is completely obvious to anyone that passage was in a low traffic area, that jones was a reckless thrill seeker trying to find "virgin" cave to explore to make a name for himself (unlikely as nobody thought any inch of this cave was unmapped), and that Jones was a highly experienced caver who flagrantly disregarded safety. In fact, Jones and a couple members of his group had been caving just a couple of times each, and were probably not what anyone would consider even intermediate level cavers. Of course, part of the role of the cave access manager was vetting that a group had an experienced leader, so this was another attempt to deflect any scrutiny about a known safety issue that was not managed properly, or really at all.
@stephenparker94342 жыл бұрын
Interesting background comments you made to this tragic and well documented event. It's become a landmark gruesome case of death in the most awful way due to unforeseen circumstances, and in a manner shocking to all, if one can envisage oneself placed in such a horrific situation. The millions of thoughts, that must have gone through John's mind, as he waited, stuck alone in that claustrophobic hole of a tunnel cave, unable to move, regretting his actions, thinking of his family, silently crushed, restricted breathing, hoping against hope for rescue, expecting rescue, then his hopes dashed, as his body gave up on him! So unlucky he found himself in a position, he could not be pulled out. As you say, it wasn't intentional, but the outcome of a bad and I'll advised decision to explore further beyond the official cave routes. Of course, this dangerous entry point going nowhere should have been seeled off, boarded with a sign 'Extreme Danger - No Entry ' as a deterrence. So there were a number of combined contributory factors that led to this caving tragedy. If correct, what you say, the cave administrator should not have blamed the death on reckless behaviour by John afterwards. Good governance of the cave and safety measures in place, could well have prevented this as well. I didn't know about the dangers that the rescuers placed themselves in, and they were injured in the attempted rescue. If anything good came out of it, it was their heroic self sacrifice and indomitable spirit in trying to help John. Also, the story reminds us that in caving as in other ventures, never under estimate potential danger!
