Because you can’t see your own psychoses from an outside perspective. You don’t do things you think are wrong unless you’re being deliberately malicious - you act based upon how your brain interprets outside stimuli. It’s just that the brain in some people doesn’t work in a particular way, or has grown and developed in a particular way that seems strange to other people. From their perspective, they’re acting completely rationally.

Seems like it's a pretty standard question. And the judge, I believe, could only prevent the question if 1) he/she had ruled on it before the trial started and somebody tried to come through the back door or 2) the defense counsel objected. Neither happened in this case.
