Selfish 'till the end. Didn't think to leave his children the plans or the little money he had left; only the rich girl. Didn't think to apologise to the waitress, only the rich girl.

He lived by his values.. stood by his conviction. The Govt. Official was wrong and wicked. There's no way he was going to apologise.. and no need. That was the strength of his character. Perhaps his greatest mistake was to leave Jacobe who loved him and wished well of him. He failed to realise her value & importance in his life. He was not greedy, not bad but ambitious and recalcitrant. Smart but unwise..

Was he greedy. He was prideful, ambitious, callous, calculating, unbending, highminded, easily sway by a pretty face. Leaving a sweet rich girl who was open to him for a beautiful poor girl who he did not know at all. Would not get a job to support his wife and family while persuing his ideas on someone elses dime. He was a failure of a human. At any point he could have made his life work. He could have choosen to stay with the rich girl. He could have got a job that could earn some money.

I don’t think greed is the right word. He just kept using people to get ahead. He used the waitress for food/housing, and used the rich girl for status while pretending to be in love with them. I don’t understand why he couldn’t have just studied to be an engineer, get his degree, and get an honest job as one afterwards.

i watched this on Netflix and this pride killed his life. Pride is one of the 7 deadly sins. hope everyone gets a lesson in life. good movie! very touching

Nope greed didn't destroy his life. In fact it was the lack of greed which did. If he continued on and didn't break up with the 2nd girl then he would have been a rich man.

I’m surprised y’all don’t get who the villain of the story is. The real villain is the disgusting class system in Europe that destroyed talent and innovation. Yes Peter did wrong too but he was a brilliant young man and they destroyed him for having pride and belief in himself.
