This is the one movie that I haven't seen but need to. I grew up in Alabama during the 60s and 70s. I never understood the hatred or racism of those times. As a white man, and the son of white parents,my parents never taught racism or bigotry. I just didn't get it. Simple food like sour milk with maize meal, hardy and fluffy grits like, maize meal called um-phokoqo. That was his favorite meal. I love it to though I dread cooking the maize meal, it's complicated to mix to perfection in order to have the best results. I think that if it was a book it must have been written by 2 or more generations. The clues are as follows: (1) In first part , it shows black people working on cotton farm as harvesters as " slaves" . That means it was before the American Civil War . (2) Many of the former slaves in south moved away from cotton farms to work in cities or at least up North ! They would take a permit for New Lands or Native Americans to farm & harvest them . Then they moved westwards . Thus , original diary / source diary was from 2 or more people . Perhaps from same family ?! . Afterall working as Butler in White House was far more comfortable & secure job than anywhere else .
