Props to this applicant for remaining so humble throughout the review of his application. It is clear that his issue is his writing and lack of clinical experience. I’m sure that once he fixes those issues that he will get some more looks from adcoms. Best of luck!!

Just a quick comment to folks: language is also important! I have worked with harm reduction clinics now for 3+ years, and wrote about those experiences in my PS. I made sure to use the language I have learned over the past years (we don't refer to folks who suffer from substance abuse disorders as "addicts," we say "unhoused populations" not "homeless", etc). So when I see people write things like "homeless, drug addicted population" I immediately know this person is likely not that involved in the community. While not everyone who works on an admission committee is deep into harm reduction language, a lot of people who read your statement are more well versed in this language than you may think (this is true for language regarding communities of folks who identify as LGBTQ+, suffer from substance abuse disorders, engage in sex work, etc). So just make sure to double check yourself. And if you mention the struggles someone else is facing, make sure you are focusing on a) how you helped them and b) how that made you want to pursue medicine :)

One quick thing, I don’t think the non-pc language was an issue. They are by definition addicts and homeless. There is nothing stigmatizing about saying an individual is homeless for example.

​@@Thatguy-mo8jd I def think that there were bigger issues at play for this applicant in particular! But language is absolutely important; I actually had interviewers tell me that they appreciated the way I used person centered language, etc. So is it going to totally wreck your app to not use "pc language"? Maybe not! But it can definitely demonstrate a level of professionalism that ADCOMs like. Ultimately using the language preferred by the folks you serve shows a level of respect and professionalism! Sure, we can refer to people as addicts or homeless (and some people dont mind/care!) but I like to use the language people in the communities I serve have expressed to me as the best way to refer to them :)

I believe this applicant RUSHED his application rather than spending months and months on it. It's so obvious to catch wrong dates in between activities, locations, etc etc. I'm surprised he asked Dr. Gray to be on this episode before reviewing his own application first. Kudos to him, but I feel an extra year or so can help him out and polish his activities section. In addition, his personal statement was kind of cringe. No experiences to back up his claims, marked his downward trend in grades, no real reason to pursue medicine besides the cliche. It would be best to get someone to read it over before submitting the next time. Since this is his second application to medical school, his third one should be top-notch solid or else the chances are extremely slim.

I love how Dr. Gray is so concise with his words, is humorous, and does not do any ‘hand holding’ but rather pushes the student to seek information. 👏🏽 (In general, not only in this video)

I love your videos! I wanted to ask, you mentioned a lot that people should bring up if their parents are physicians. My dad is a veterinarian but I do not feel it impacted my decision to go into medicine, I actually never really had interest in the veterinary path at all. do you think this is something I should feature in my application anyway -- this would take additional effort because it's so unrelated (to me)

Hi Dr.! I love your videos! I’m a high school student who got accepted into a BS/DO program that requires a 1000 (one thousand)hours of volunteering in undergrad. Does that sound extreme to you? Or is that about average of how much competitive medical school applicants have? I appreciate your input.

Congrats first off! And I know P.A.s that have to complete those amount of hours in their undergrad before they apply to PA school. It is definitely doable

imo, no! you could do 10 hours/week and get it done in just under 2 years :))

@@wynsday thats true, I thought of that. but I feel its unrealistic to do it on regular basis as volunteering and community service need to be set up in advance. There are sessions and availability. Also, over summer I would fly back home and would set up volunteering in a different state.

Your comment is rather judgmental, is medicine for you? He's too young, everyone has a different learning curve in terms of maturity, especially those that went thru invisible struggles but haven't yet processed them. The fact that he voices for a vulnerable population shows that he has a passion (just needs to carefully state and tuck away the raw emotions), it breaks my heart to read that his brother died of OD. I just think this guy hasn't matured yet to realize the impact of his brother's death dawned upon him, and maybe other things too like his upbringing. I would love to see more of that in his PS. His dad is a surgeon but it doesn't mean every doctor is invested in their children's wellbeing. The fact that one of the sons died and another struggled with mental illnesses says a lot about the parents. I say this as someone with more life and work experience, both parents went thru higher education, and I still grew up in foster care in an underdeveloped area, 1st gen immigrant, missing love and support from my own parents. I had to be my own "parent". After I healed my inner child, on the other hand, now be their "parents" to cook for them, educate them, foster communication, and raise their awareness. Surprisingly, I mostly have an optimistic outlook, and always see the merit in others, probably because I was raised with more responsible foster families. I do not know his background enough but the way he showed humbleness in heeding advice. He deserves compassion. I recommend him to discoverand understand himself better.
