I love that Turbo Granny is so competent at entirely mundane things like sneaking around, stealing, analyzing situations, and controlling conversations. She’s not just an evil spirit with lots of raw power, she’s also a tough old lady who’s been around the block a few times and bounced back after heavy losses. Even as a tiny lucky cat statue, she knows she can handle herself and she’s just living her best afterlife.

Alicia-Chan, I have studied Japanese folklore and visit often due to having a business partner there. Turbo Granny looks down upon yokai because in Folklore she is actually a Shaman in the past who quelled the anguish of the dead and mourns them. In this story she is able to also channel sorrow into power in the form of Shapeshifting and speed as well as talking to the dead creating temporary zombies who only the gifted can see. She is basically a "Medium" who gains power from the dead by praying for them and they extended her life with their lives that were cut short. Onmyoji were the term, some were bound to the shogun, some were hermits like her who lived on a mountain that eventually became a tunnel and in modern legends people say when they pass through it unrespectfully at night they see glimpses of her to scare them, which is where the term 100 km came from.

I heard a lot about onmyoji but weren't they, like, emperor sorcerers focused on divination? Also the whole deal with summoning shikigami was their thing too. But the Turbo Granny just happens to be an Ayakashi or Yokai that just happens to have this kind of power on this anime, right?

@sendouvincent8232 some were not tied to the emperors and considered Monks and Hermits. Some myths even have a tale of one who changed from a 80 year old man to a younger woman and only took risky or dangerous jobs. Their main priority is to deal with supernatural phenomenon and prevent it from disturbing the balance but some prioritized the royalty while some prioritized the afflicted poor ones who had challenging cases. Some of these phenomenon may have been diseases but they were thinkers beyond their time. Regardless they channel the spirits around them in order to deal with issues "they choose" to deal with but the royal tied ones did feel obligated to follow orders. So Turbo Granny may have been one who took care of young women for centuries and as it shifted from Meiji, WWII and Modern day the bodies just piled on so she has a lot of power to channel. As you can tell, Okarun gets depressed in his "haunted form" it's because her power comes from the wishes of the dead she prays to. The reason I don't say further back like Edo is because she has a rebellious nature when the reformation happened.

There’s a neat piece on Sakuga Blog about the production process behind the first four episodes. One of the first things it goes into is how each occult beastie gets its own color - red for Turbo Granny, blue for the Serpo dudes, I guess the Flatwoods Monster is gray, and now Acrobatic Silky with that hot pink shade. It’s neat recognizing that in the show when you know what to look for - like how every time Okarun uses his power, there’s red, because it comes from Turbo Granny.
