This is the type of guy that would get “intimidated” by an accomplished woman and downplay her accomplishments because he really is intimidated. @@frickpoo6644 It was stated that she had a job in N Carolina before they moved to Ohio, as well as that she got some sort of a job after they got to Ohio. His job in Ohio couldn't be particularly high-paying, since he could not afford the apartment on his own, after she left. It's difficult to absolutely know who is out of who's league from this short case, BUT my impression is that she is indeed in a higher league than him. Problem is that she already has a child that is not his child. That puts her at a disadvantage in trying to make a relationship work with a man who is not the father. Seems that she has made some sort of previous mistakes, either in her choice of men and/or in her decision to allow the former partner to get her pregnant. Maybe her biggest flaw is in her choices of men?? If so, that's one huge flaw.

I can relate, however I did end up dating (after a very long time of scoping out/ remaining extremely observant before introducing the girls slowly, then ALWAYS keeping them with me while paying close attention to their reactions to/ interactions with, since kids are the best judge of character!). I can proudly say that my being very choosey & taking things extra slow paid off immensely! My husband ended up being the girls' actual DAD (as bio father was nothing). He's been beyond exceptional, and they've asked as legal adults for him to formally adopt. The bottom line is KIDS. CAME. FIRST!

Nah. I think it is EXTREMELY wise to live with someone for a little while before you legally bind yourself to them. You need to know if you get along in a shared space first. The only reason people say “this is why you get married first” is because married people are less likely to leave despite any issues they face because they’re legally tied together, not because those issues don’t exist. Married people still deal with all of these problems when first moving in together; they’re just less likely to kick one another out because they’d need a legal separation before they’re allowed to. I met this guy at a bar one night. 2 weeks later he moved me in to his apartment. One the 3rd week, he didn’t go to work one morning. His car was blocking mine so he told me to drive his. Warning bells went off, but he was insistent. I had a rough day at work, and came into the apartment and steaks were coming off the grill and a big glass of sweet tea was waiting for me. He said, “did you see your car.” I said no, why? He takes me out to the parking lot and this dude has done the unthinkable!! I have 4 brand new tires on my car and he had replaced the brakes and rotors! I looked at him and said “if this is your way of asking me to marry you, I say yes!” And we did, 4 months later. Now, here we are, 31 years later, 3 grown kids, ups and downs, but always having each other’s backs! When you live together, you see who they are, and in this poor girls case, you see who they aren’t.

This is good advice until you realized most young people can't afford any place without a roommate. Between the ages of 19 and 24 I had to live with multiple roommates and still paid $900 in rent. There were no options to live alone for less than $1200 a month. It's either roommates, go back home, or be on the streets. I'd say don't sign a year long lease if you can help it, but you don't always have the option of month to month.

I'm traditional and believe in a marriage, men should provide and women should take care of their kids, but in today's environment, women need skills, education, etc., in case the man she marries turns out to be a jerk; then she doesn't have to depend on the jerk. That's why I'm paying through the nose for my daughters to get a useful degree.
