I watched an interview of the Osmonds where the brothers explained how they could all play so many instruments and dance so well. The family didn’t have a lot of money so each brother went to different types of music lessons and then they would return home and teach the rest of the family what they just learned. They spoke of having to pay close attention in their lessons because their family was depending on them to explain what to do. I remember Alan also took karate lessons and he incorporated some of those moves into their choreography. The plan worked; they all became proficient enough to play multiple instruments although they each specialized on certain ones. Any way you look at it, they’re incredibly gifted but they invested a ton of sweat equity by practicing. They have such a work ethic. They’re known as “the one-take Osmonds” because they’re so well rehearsed that they perform perfectly the first time and don’t need more takes.

Donny and Marie in their later teen years had a network variety show "The Donny and Marie Show" where they had musical numbers with guests and comedy skits. They had a regular segment on their show where they sang an intro where Marie sang "I'm a little Country" and Donny would answer with "I'm a little Rock and Roll" and they sang duets of each type of song which were covers of popular songs of the time. They were good together and their careers went long after the main group with the older brothers faded away....but the whole family appeared on Christmas Specials singing together and reprising their old act.

Yes I remember there variety show quite. But come on you have to admit that it really was not very good. Actually it was way too Goody Goody for any consideration as far as quality on TV. If you were young when that TV show was on I'm sure you would have liked it and that is the difference between a show standing on its own merits and fans that like anything a certain person does. If you are around 14 years old at the time this show was on TV I'm sure you have great fond memories. To anyone older than that age we generally found it to be just a little bit too Goody Goody.

The lead singer is Merrill. In fact, he sings lead on more than 90% of their songs. The other brothers are: Alan, Wayne, Jay and of course Donny. The reason why they are so in sync with their dancing and singing is because they spent 7 years as regulars on The Andy Williams Show, beginning when they were grade school age. You can see their progression as singers, dancers and musicians by watching clips on KZbin (from the Andy Williams Show). OH, and among them they play more than 30 different instruments.

Wow I didn't know they play 30 different instruments. What an amazing family.

I knew they played a lot of instruments -- sax, keyboards, guitars, drums, what all else do they play? I got to see them live -- the whole family -- in Oklahoma City, summer of 1984 (or 83?) don't remember for sure, and stayed down in the parking lot until 1 a.m. with a group of other die hards to get to meet them. :) What a thrill!
@sydneym4340 Жыл бұрын
@@LoriPeace Some of the other instruments they play are: piano, banjo, percussion, trumpet, trombone, bass (the big standing one), clarinet, violin, bagpipes, tambourine, xylophone, recorder, tuba, flute .... of course not every member plays every one of these instruments. Hope you enjoyed the show in Oklahoma. My first time seeing the entire family perform was Vegas 1978. Saw them again in '79, '80, '81, '82, '83, and '84. Met them countless times, although only met Marie once ... in '79 (Vegas).

@@sydneym4340 I LOVED the show in Oklahoma. I had seats up in the nosebleeds of the stadium. I'd bought myself a telephoto lens for my camera, just special for that occasion, and still could barely see them LOL. Donny arrived by helicopter -- I don't really remember how the others came out. When I got to meet them at the end of the show, the four older brothers and Jimmy came out first, and they stood around and chatted, signed autographs -- really great. Donny came out next and took off at a fast walk for the limo. One other young woman and I trotted along beside him and got autographs -- I don't know if anyone else did. I was ... disappointed. When I got back to the rest of the group, Marie had come out and was buried. I stuck my arm in with my book, and when I pulled it out, it was signed, presumably by her. LOL I'd actually taken a "novelization" of Goin' Coconuts, rather than an autograph book or an album for them to sign, because I wanted to stand out from the crowd. I remember Jay looked at it and said, "Where did you get thie?!?" I told him it came out about the same time as the movie, and he laughed and said, "Well, let's hope that never comes out again."
@LoriPeace Жыл бұрын
@@sydneym4340 I also got to see Donny in concert in 2002, when he was at the Turning Stone in Central New York. I told my mother-in-law I wanted to go and was planning on getting tickets, and she said, don't worry, I'll get them for you. When my husband and I arrived at the venue, the guy at the door looked at our tickets and said, "I'll show you to your seats." I assumed we'd be back in the nosebleeds again, and I was okay with that -- I mean, free tickets, right? The guy started walking us around way to the far right of the auditorium, and I thought, oh, no, we're going to be behind a pillar or something. Got almost down to the front where there was a couple of rows of tables and chairs and he started walking to the center. My sweet mother-in-law had gotten us seats at a table in the front row, just to the left of the little steps that go up onto the stage. When Donny came out to sing, I was maybe 20-30 feet away from him. JAW DROP Best mother-in-law EVER. Not to mention an amazing concert!

Marie Osmond was only 13 years old when she released her song Paper Roses and it went to number 1 on the country charts. You also need to check out some of Donny’s later songs like Soldier of Love. When it came out, Donny had been so pigeonholed as a teen idol that none of the radio stations would play his newer songs. A station finally started playing Soldier of Love, but they kept it a secret who was singing it. It wasn’t until a tremendous number of people requested the song that they finally told who it was.

I'm so glad you started doing reactions to the Osmonds. Bit of history: two oldest brothers are deaf, which is the reason Alan, Wayne, Merrill, and Jay began singing, to raise money for hearing aids; began singing at Disneyland and later were regulars on the Andy Williams Show; Donny, Marie, and Jimmy followed a little later; they have been in show business for over 60 years; most have retired by now; Alan has multiple sclerosis, Wayne had a brain tumor removed, Jimmy suffered a stroke; they play over 30 instruments; Donny and Marie had a show that ran 4 (?) years; Alan's 5 sons perform as The Second Generation Osmonds (son David also has MS); the 4 original singing Osmonds were in a show called The Travels of Jamie McPheters (not sure that's spelled correctly); Donny performed in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Listen to him sing Any Dream Will Do). It's from 7 years ago with Maria Friedman and the late Richard Attenborough. I could go on and on, but I'll just sit back, listen, and enjoy the Osmonds! Thank you for your great reactions.

Fun fact: The Osmonds outsold The Jackson 5 back in the early 70s, Marie had a big hit 1973 with, Paper Roses. Love Me For A Reason was another big hit for the Osmonds in 1974👍✌️

Loved hearing this again. Marie Osmond didn't sing in her brothers band, but in 1973 at the age of 14 she reached #1 on the Billboard charts with her debute song "Paper Roses". She later had a TV variety show with her brother Donnie.

This song, and YoYo, were my favourite Osmond songs when I was in high school. I still maintain it was the best era for music

Marie is very talented. She and Donny had a hit TV show in the 70's. Obviously, it was called the Donny and Marie Show. You should check out some episodes.

Gosh this takes me way way back!! I had such a big crush on Donny that lasted like 12 yrs. The Osmonds were a big and talented family. Marie was the only girl and was born after Donny. Then after her was the final kid- Jimmy who did at times join in to sing at times. He has a hit song once when he was around 12. The Osmonds that you don't see but in the occasional family holiday special was- Tom and Virl(?). They were the eldest Osmonds, and also deaf. That's why they weren't singing in the group. Donny even these days has had his own Vegas show. He's 5 yrs older than myself. The family has always been strong in their Faith as Mormons.

This was a ginormous hit in 1970, along with their other big hit, "One Bad Apple." I had just "left the nest" and set off on my life's journey in the Summer of '70 and was working in Tulsa as a disc jockey at one of America's top Top 40 stations, "The Big 97," KAKC. We played the ever-lovin' snot out of this record. Then the Osmonds came to town and played the big concert arena in Tulsa. Being with the radio station that was presenting the show, I was more or less obligated to go, even though the Osmonds weren't exactly my cup of tea. (Teeny-bopper kiddy band.) But I went. And I believe today, 53 years later, my ears are still ringing from the experience. I never had the privilege of seeing The Beatles perform live, but we've all seen the footage of the Beatles' adoring fans -- all those teenage girls, screaming and shrieking their lungs out. Well, attending this Osmonds concert was pretty much the same, except the ages of the screaming girls was, on average, about 5 years younger. It was the teenage girls and their younger pre-teen sisters who attended this show (and the poor unsuspecting boyfriends who had to endure it). For the duration of the show, I couldn't hear a single note the band played over the din off all the screaming girls. And whenever little Donny Osmond stepped up to the mic, it was so loud, you couldn't hear yourself think. I've sat in the front row of some very loud rock concerts, including Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, and Paul McCartney & Wings, but none of those shows left me feeling like I might never regain my hearing again quite like that Osmonds concert did. There's no denying the talent these guys possessed. And I know they were wizards in the studio. But I have always considered that concert to be one of the two worst concerts I ever attended (the worst being Steppenwolf in Kansas City, KS in 1969). But honestly, in 1970, if you were an 11 or 12 year old girl, I'm sure this record was right up your alley, and you probably had covers of 16 Magazine with Donny Osmond's face on the cover tacked up on your bedroom wall. Me? When i got home from that concert, I just wanted to wash off.

Can't help but smile at this song. Donny is already a grandfather.

Marie sang a lot of songs that had a country slant to it. As a matter of fact Donnie & Marie had a variety show for a few years where every week they would sing a song where Marie said "I'm a little bit country" and Donnie would reply "And I'm a little bit rock n roll." Also, Donnie was infamous for occasionally wearing purple socks. One day I wore a pair of socks to school that were bluish purple and for about a month my classmates called me Johnny Osmond. 🤣😂

Back in the day, we would stay in the gym for recess on cold winter days, the teacher had a record player and the girls would dance. This was a huge song then, no one sat this one out! That was the best part of 7th grade.

A whole lot of people tried to write them off as just a pop group but they did some really rockin' work on their Crazy Horses album! Having seen them in concert I can tell you they always gave you an amazing show. Definitely check out Crazy Horses, but also Just Like A Yo-Yo is really fun. And then there is Donny's solo stuff that had all of us little girls swooning. 😁 You totally made my day!

Yeah, they've been in the business since 1962, so they are hardly just a "pop" group. In fact, they've probably done almost every genre out there.

Love that someone is giving The Osmonds their dues. I've been a fan for 52 yrs and always will be. Hold Her Tight and Crazy Horses are a couple of rockers. Life Is Hard Enough Without Goodbyes is an awesome song. Slower tempo but cool vibe, guitar is great...I could see Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd doing it. For real live Osmonds, look for Ohio State Fair videos around 1972. Keep On Jammin'

My bedroom walls were covered with Osmond posters (Merrill was my favorite) for a couple of years in the early 70s. Donny still performs in Las Vegas and so does their one sister, Marie. They both also do limited tours. Donny and Marie had a great variety show and hosted nearly every big name in the business.

WOOHOOOO!! Thanks for finally reacting to this one. :) Crazy Horses is the title you were thinking of. Yo-Yo is another big hit of theirs y'all should check out sometime. Marie had several hits but she was mostly a country music artist. I think however that she did put out an album of opera a year or two ago called "Unexpected". Their music has always made me smile like a fool and sing along.
@kevinmoore2929 Жыл бұрын
The song is Crazy Horses. Marie is the only sister but Jimmy is the youngest. Marie had a country hit in the 70s called Paper Roses and another in the late 80s/early 90s called Meet Me in Montana with Dan Seals(formerly part of England Dan and John Ford Coley). I'm pretty sure that the Osmonds were younger than the Jacksons when they started performing. You really need to look into their family history when it comes to them performing.

I saw Donny perform as Joseph in the play Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He was amazing!!! At one point they fly him over the audience and they had to stop him mid flight as the technicians controlling him could not hear anything over the noise of the crowd. Everyone was on their feet screaming and cheering. Donnie eventually had to motion with his hands for everyone to sit down. Only then were they able to continue on with the play.

The lead was Merrill. Donny took over later on. The best singers are Merrill, Donny and Jimmy Osmond. You should do a reaction to their 50th anniversary ...The 4 oldest boys sang to earn money for hearing aids because their two oldest brothers Virl and Tom especially Tom are hearing impaired. Their sister Marie has a great voice too. It's called Final Osmond Family C9ncert 2008. It's an hour . It's amazing The oldest two actually do sign language for the last 2 songs. It's very touching and shows their talent that was never lost.

You should do a deep dive of the Osmonds on Andy Williams TV show. The 4 older brothers started singing Barbershop Quarter as little kids. They were so cute!! You should check out the song that shot Donny to the moon, Puppy Love.
