He-Man and the Power Sword

Join me as a I read the first of the four storybooks included with the first wave of Mattel's Masters of the Universe figures. He-Man and Power Sword gives us the origin of the He-Man and his fight to protect Castle Grayskull from the evil forces of Skeletor. Everything a kid needed to know about the play pattern was included in this story.

This Origin, is very Robert E Howard and something to it's straightforward elegance appeals to my older mind. The new Minicomics seem to split the difference.

Now we then go on to contrast this to "The Tale of Teela" which tries to untangle Mattel's perhaps in advertent blunder in not knowing how to market her to boys. Which keeps getting echoed.

Skeletor is outright Thulsa Doom here which probably accounts for why Mattel has leaned hard into the once premature ended Keldor story in modern tellings.

A Jungle He-Man and deposed sorcerer-prince Keldor sits fine in my mind: Randor's brother yet not Jungle He-man's uncle. Got a weird mashup of Minicomics and 200x at work in my head.

If Mattel were smart they'd reconceptualize She-Ra as a Jungle Girl while keeping her He-man's sister who followed him out of the jungle on his quest for honor and justice on Eternia.

@@thecouncilofbrazilianchads5580 it was gradual. Prince Adam, Cringer, and the Royal family of Randor and Marlena first appeared in the DC Comics miniseries. The Filmation series adapted this further and it was all incorporated into the minicomics packed with the later released figures. While I like it all, I am partial to original stories because that was what influenced my play time as a child with my Masters of the Universe toys.
