Well take that with a grain of salt. Based on a true story in Hollywood could be as ridiculous as a man killed his wife in real life. Yet the movie shows the man possessed by the devil before The devil makes an appearance in the film and kills both people. That's how ridiculous based on a true story can be sometime. For example The Amityville horror. The real story was a man killed his family. All of the supernatural shit was added after the fact.

A famous con man did something like this to Al Capone. The con man borrowed a large amount of money to invest in some "venture" from Capone. The con man never used the money and just kept it until it was almost due for repayment. He returned the full amount without interest but told Capone his venture didn't work out. Capone, instead of disappointment, was actually impressed that someone actually returned all his money as people would always screw over Capone and give excuses as to why they can't pay and return the money. Finally Capone said something like "I'm sorry your business didn't work out" and gave the con man a healthy amount of money for his trouble and being "honest". The con wasn't the large amount of money but the smaller payment Capone would give for unexpectedly giving back his money. The con man predicted Capones psychology and knew the perfect con for someone in Al's position. Very much like this movie.

I know that feeling about the hat. Been wearing a hat religiously since I was around five. Probably my biggest pet peeve if someone touches it, takes it off my head or I misplaced it. It's a deal breaker if I can't wear a hat at work. No idea why it bothers me so, but it instantly makes me mad if any of the top three things I mentioned above happen. Shoved a stripper off my lap once when she tried taking my hat off. She lost a $20 dollar bill from her thong after I pushed her off. I found it. 😊
