Wow, Bobs was quite a place. I am 40 and born and raised in Dundee and going in there was a unique experience. I bought a ton of NES and Sega video games from when I was young. I go through Dundee and still see the store front and very recently wondered about the place.

These globe containers were designed to hold glass tumblers and ice bucket in the middle. You would generally find these on home bars in someone's basement. They weren't really used in commercial applications. Although some people will say liquor was stored in them this would be rare as home bars generally had liquor stored on shelves behind the bar for presentation.

Regarding the Globe: I saw the exact piece in downtown Orange, CA at a Antique and Collectables place. It had gold rimmed glasses on the outside and the inside had a round ice holder. She explained that some people stored liquor in the middle but she had a perfect leather ice bucket that fit in it. She actually had a name for it, so it is a "thing" that has a name to it. I had a weird name like a hostess bar globe?

I know exactly what Bob was talking about in transforming the street for the movie. I live in the area so my daughter and I worked as extras in the movie, "Road to Perdition". I actually am seen in the opening sequences in Dundee a couple of times. It was amazing to get transformed into the 30s garb. However, it was near freezing and the fake snow and rain at times made our feet miserable. We ducked into the local businesses between takes just to keep warm. If you ever have an opportunity to be an extra, do it. I did 8 movies back in the 2000's.

The globe my grandparents had one. The middle was for an ice bowl or bucket. The notched out area had glasses on one side and bottles of liquor on the other. Well that at least how they had it set up.

It makes me sad to see people 80+ years old (especially on the show American Pickers) who are very reluctant to sell or down size, thinking they are gonna live another 40 years. It's probably been said a hundred times by now but that globe is an alcohol cabinet. The middle should have a bucket that holds a bottle of liquor or a decanter and the circular cut outs on the perimeter are intended to hold glasses.
