That’s vastly understating the situation. I used to see nearly every movie that came out, now I watch maybe 2 or 3 new movies a year. HW directors can’t even film a shot of a man crossing the street without using CGI. It’s like watching a football game where all the players are 60 something retired NFL guys, but not only are they old and fat, they’ve completely forgotten the rules of the game.

Well done JJ. You finally united Star Trek and Star Wars fans in their hatred of you. He is a worthless writer and creative... I use the term loosely. As a director, he gets hystrionic performances from his actors and seems to encourage big emotional outbursts which are jarring and unearned. I simply hate him, Kurtzman, RTD, Barbara Broccoli, Kennedy and the rest of these talentless hack frauds who have buried our collective childhood favourites. F(_)ck 'em and the horses they rode on on.

The whole "Mystery Box" only works if the creator of the story knows what's already inside and how everything connects to it. And even then, you can't have everything be a mystery. It's like that need to make things more complex to intrigue the audience when a straight forward story can be more than enough, it's the characters and themes that need to be built upon.

Not being an a-hole because i’m agreeing with you but “the mystery box only works…” is an oxymoron. The mystery box only works when you don’t complete the character’s journey before you start writing the script. So in essence, the story can only work if there is no mystery box. Since before aristotle and the like, the “mystery” is the “false belief” of the character or the “lie the character believes.” In GOT for instance, Jon’s false belief is that he’s a bastard. Dany’s false belief is that she’s the heir. Both of these false beliefs are tied to the throne, or to the central theme where everyone’s playing a game to get the throne. Vital information about the lie is that Jon is the heir and Dany is not. What the characters do with that information can either lead to a negative or positive arc. In the case of GOT, it leads to a negative arc for both characters. But everything the characters do is based on their “emotionally wounds” which directly inform their “false beliefs.” If their behavior doesn’t change when they learn the truth, then they’d have a negative arc. JJ MAY give his characters false beliefs. If he does, they don’t act in a way that reflects those beliefs. For instance, Rey’s emotional wound is that she’s an orphan, the lie that she tells herself is that her parents will return, but then she leaves the planet anyway, and in the first twenty minutes of the film. The mystery box is essentially not giving the character a false belief, and essentially not giving them a character arc or a believable one where you can logically understand their decisions as soon as they make them. So it’s not just the mystery that’s frustrating, it’s not just the intentionality behind not creating substance, it’s also the effect it has on the entire story and how a character’s arc is supposed to align with the central theme of the story.
@tjjordan4207
@tjjordan4207 Ай бұрын
@@VonJay I'm in agreement with you. There has to be a false belief in order for a mystery to work. And speaking of GOT, another example is the reason why the mystery behind Jon Snow's mother works is because of the lie we bought immediately, that being Ned is his father. In fact, the mystery we never knew we needed to ask was "who are Jon Snow's parents". That's why I was always against the identity of Jon's mother being Ashara Dayne. If you don't know who that is, the books go into slightly greater detail about her, despite being dead long before the events of the books. She was a beautiful woman that Ned or Brandon (Ned's older brother) may have been in love with. The fan theory is that Ned and Ashara conceived Jon before her death. The reason I never bought into the theory is because the novels straight up paint her as the prime suspect, with Catelyn even confronting Ned about the possibility. For one, if it was her, it would be massively disappointing and doesn't answer why Ned was secretive. Also, there's no lie or false belief behind it, like you just said.

He know you wave around instruments and cut things and put stitches here or there- and from a distance it seems like something real is happening…. But theres nothing coherent actually happening. He’s made a career of leaving others to “close” for him (letting them eat the disastrous malpractice) …. This worked with TV or collaborative projects … but the more control and more work he does in films the more people can see that he has no idea what he’s actually doing.

That’s an illusion though. He’s aping the way in which something good would start …. But it’s empty. Good things unveil elements and plot points in dramatically interesting ways… Abrams does the inverse. He dramatically “unveils” disconnected nonsense bc there is no story or plot underwriting. Your brain anticipates pleasure and value of “things coming together” and the opposite happens and he’s made a career of skipping out, leaving others to hold the bag when the sham falls apart. As he works more in cinema it’s become much more difficult to obfuscate his ineptitude for storytelling. What I mean is good writers begin with what would be inside a mystery box (or at least a working idea of it) then they judiciously reveal things to enrich the telling of their story… Abrams can only pantomime storytelling bc there is never an actual story taking place

Gary's resolution always looks poor, like about 480p or worse. I'd like to see it stepped up to at least 720p, or since this is youtube, 1080p would be good.
