Henry Cavill nailed it on the head: THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS "TOXIC FANDOM." It's just fans being passionate about what they love. If you take what they love, and torture it, mutate it, and turn it into something no longer like what they love, then you have to expect those passionate fans to react.

Must as I want to agree, I don't. Some fandom really is terribad. Like remember when someone was hounded into self deletion because she did fan art of a cartoon? Remember when shippers tried to break up Adam Drivers marriage? That's some messed up stuff and it needs to be called out, not ignored.

@@Mereologist you're incorrectly conflating multiple groups of people into one. The first group are terminally online mental patients. The second are the result of effectively nuking old Tumblr. They're barely fandom people and fit far better in the lonely, eternally horny yet forever untouched weirdos category. Neither of these are what's colloquially being referred to here as toxic fandom. It's taken them this long to get to 'a small minority of toxic fans persuade others to listen to them', inadvertently or not insulting audiences again by claiming they're so easily led by a 'small minority'. @@the_absurd_heroand one surprisingly easy to explain, media study is a newish field, and there aren't many serious theorists, unfortunately those there are typically tend to be extreme 'left' (though socialist grifter would probably be more accurate) so every relevant study that's been done in or on the industry says that the audience will just consume and blindly accept everything they are told like sheep. So when they see backlash they can't understand it as evey bit of data they have tells them it shouldn't be happening as the consumer is passive and believes what is put on screen. They don't realise these studies are utter bollocks written by academics who have as much contact with the every man as the Mars Rover. (The latest media illiteracy term thrown around is proof of this, it directly contradicts what I was taught day 1 at uni which is just by the nature of the world we all have high media literacy, the degree was just to provide a language and frame work to explain what you already knew and shows they are desperate for an explanation). The trick is: their NOT losing to KZbinrs at all, they are simply driving away their loyal customers. They just don’t want to acknowledge that and instead blame KZbinrs, because they can fight KZbinrs. It’s utterly impossible in a free market to fight your customers and survive. In a way, they prefer to fight KZbinrs to fixing their problems and are in fact killing their own business that way … all by themselves. They always overestimate the influence somebody online has. They i.e. thought that twitter was the global opinion, despite being the smallest of the bigger social media sites. They invested billions into fringe twitter groups, because they thought that a couple of bots as followers means that there is a vast modern audience hiding somewhere (probably behind the moon). If I think about this, they seem to be rather dumb and silly.

As time went on and they started using this against IP after IP, the fans noticed hey their now talking about their favorite IP, and they are saying it about me, but I am not toxic. Now fans no longer fall for this false reporting of fandoms as toxic, because the fans from different fandoms are looking over the fence and now notice they are saying the same thing over and over again, if they are lieing about me being toxic, they are also lying about the other IP fans being toxic.

What a lot these tools don’t get is that fans AREN’T FANS of singular franchises. Most fans aren’t JUST fans of marvel, or Star Wars, or Star Trek, or LOTR, most fans like aspects of all of them or at least some of them, so these tools move from franchise to franchise assuming the new fans will accept them but those fans will be the old fans that are the enemy of the tools, and they never ever want to learn from their mistakes.

It's pretty clear there's a culture that's developed within the studios where they're deathly afraid to have certain things said about them that intimate they're unPC in any way. Such as the fear of having someone on twitter see a random image from a film and be like, "Where's the black people?" They've found that this is not conducive to business by now... but they're going to keep at it.

That's because what the media terms as "superfans" (literally anyone who has ever watched a single episode of anything) vs the actual "superfan" (the people who were into a franchise since they could walk or watch anything with any kind of recall). It takes nothing for an influencer with deep pockets to buy entire catalogs of materials to give the ILLUSION of being knowledgeable about something (how do we know this - none of the material in their bookshelves shows any sign of wear - it's all "decor").

I love how deliberately disingenuous people like Amandla are. The show was cancelled because it was bad. It was created by someone, who has no passion for the Star Wars Universe, who wanted to make a show equivalent to her 'experiences' as a lesbian, was gifted to a nepo baby with the acting range of a potato and it tried so hard to make the peacemakers of the galaxy into the bad guys, because they didn't trust lesbian space witches. It was the worst viewed Star Wars show across the board and all that the fandom did, was point out how bad it was, Leslye and Amandla did all the heavy lifting on making such a pathetically bad show. Not to mention that Leslye was Harvey's assistant, during the height of his 'criminal activity' that she has to have know about it. I would even wager that she even helped and knows where some 'bodies are buried' which is why she was gifted this by KK.

Today contacts alone and/or belonging to x y z minority gets you in Hedland's case a $200M budget, a famous IP as a plaything and to point at X young actress and say 'that one'. Ditto ROP showrunners. Bullshit the head of Prime you know more about Tolkien than you do though you've had half a writing credit each in 10 years and bingo. No wonder we get crap.

I do think that the problem is that escapism is no longer escapism. If there is any Action, Adventure, Laughs, Fantasy, then it’s smothered by messaging of one kind or another which changes the product from entertainment to “education”. I got into Comics, Sci Fi and Fantasy as I could escape my real world for an hour or two and not think about my life and what’s going on in the world. I came out of Deadpool Wolverine after an incredible reaction from the audience that I haven’t experiences during and at the end of a film for many years. I was and am hopeful the financial success alone would or certainly should show that a film like deadpool wolverine should be the template for the future. To entertain, thrill and make your audience thrill and ultimately want more, a lot more of this kind of material. I’m hopeful but probably only if Ryan Reynolds ends up running MARVEL with Hugh Jackman as his deputy. A man can dream cant he?

To support Shad's comment - the Kotor games are different from the movies, expanding upon the Force in ways the films don't even touch upon, and defining a lot of lore that the movies never introduce. However, those games were so good that most people consider them nearly as formative for the EU as the original trilogy and they are a foundation of much EU canon. People will accept deviation from the original material if it is done well.

Yeah, funnily enough, the two KOTORs, especially 2, have something that people criticized about The Acolyte- showing the Jedi in a bad light. In fact, there's a line in Kotor 2 that's not dissimilar to the infamous comment by that Acolyte actor (Barnett) who said that SW is about which side you're standing on, and not good vs evil. In Kotor 2 there's been a war between the Jedi and Sith, but we're told that it's called the Jedi Civil War because the "regular" people see no difference between the two sides. However, a lot of players liked this take, since it was something different and darker. Problem is The Acolyte makers seemed to really not like the Jedi; plus they kept portraying them as idiots.

The requirement of having to go to a movie theater to watch a new movie and the locked in time of scheduled tv was a guaranteed broad audience. And many "fans" blossomed out of the mass of audiences. Now, the internet, streaming, KZbin and a plethora of other mechanisms is forcing them to learn to give the smaller group of specific "fans" what we want. And we want good quality storytelling of our favorite shows and stories. They're not used to that. Not sure if you followed Disparu's critiques of each episode. They were each twice as long as each episode. He would bring up some situation that didn't pass the common sense test and once you were aware of it you couldn't ignore it. Stupid actions which made no sense, beget more stupid actions which beget even more of them. One would think if you are going to push a certain narrative like "The Message" you would really go over the top in making something of quality. Instead they make garbage created by hacks. Some of those L.H. reviews where she made it sound like the writing process seemed to be "This Episode" being the focus with only a little effort put in for continuity. "That's cool!!! Put it in!!!" and while cool, it messes up the story further down stream.
