IIRC "The Book of the Dead" is not only a book but a level-up item that players in Yggdrasil could use to evolve into an Elder Lich (Ainz himself used one to evolve his original Skeleton Mage character up to Elder Lich before he evolved further into an Undead Overlord). Also, I think Runes in Yggdrasil were mostly just a cosmetic thing; some items had runes slapped onto them not for any enchanting benefit but just because they look cool (and maybe they make for good flavor text).

So I just found this out but apparently there are two books of the dead. One is the racial change item like you described and the other is what I described. According to Maruyama they are two distinct things. Though apparently in the anime it bears some resemblance to an ancient Egyptian funerary text based on the text on the cover. Sorry I missed that.

They were, and Ainz even has items with runes on them that he admits have nothing to do with their enchantments. Now I can’t remember if the series explains it. However it is theorized that a player probably brought powerful items with runes on them into the new world. Then the dwarves inspired by these powerful items devoted hundreds of years of hard work and magical talent into making runes a real form of enchantment.

Runes did 3 things in Yggdrasil: (1) Made weapons and Gear look good and to show off as a rare or epic item. (2) Bonus affects like +1 to +3 off based damage, or faster cool down of a select ability, or regen items durability. (3) Made attacks look different like green fire or noise affects, or looks heavy or fake demons surrounding the armor. Basically 1 to 2 runes were real runes. The rest were just different forms of cosmetics. Ainz has a sword with 20 Runes but only 2 actually affect combat.

@@PacMonster0 I don't remember the whole novel, but I found in volume 11, that Ainz shows the dwarfs a sword with 20 purple runes on it: See section below. So I think there might be some details which have been overlooked :) 'The Sorcerer King raised the sword, as though to show it to the Dwarves. Gondo’s eyes instinctively followed its glow as well. “Alright, gentlemen, please direct your attention to the body of the sword.” Gondo followed where the Sorcerer King was pointing, and cried out. So did the other smiths. There were 20 purple runes carved upon it. However, only Gondo noticed that one of the runes on the sword was the same as the one which the Sorcerer King had described during their encounter in the tunnel.'

What people often forget, is that despite the evil things Momonga (Ainz) often does, he doesn't do these things out of maliciousness nor does he derive a some kind of sick enjoyment out of it (looking at you Demiurge). The game mechanics having been converted into "reality" have changed how he reacts to outside stimuli and to the world, but it hasn't changed the fact that in his heart, in his soul, Momonga is still, human. That is his greatest strength in the show and why he is so incomprehensible to the NPCs. He still sees value in life, still sees the worth of humanity. True, he sees this worth in a twisted way, mostly to the benefit of Nazarick, but that's better than going "Nope, im going to nuke this world into a ball of ash and just to not deal with these silly humans" Where as the NPCs of Nazarick are utterly inhuman, it is paradoxically the undead Overlord, who has the most humanity in common with the people of the outside world. He doesn't see the humans of the new world as insects or lesser being, he sees them as people and often tries to correct the NPCs views. Momonga being there, restraining the dark urges of the NPCs, keeping at least a some kind of hold on their leashes, is the only reason the world hasn't been consumed in death and ruin by now. And that's why he's beggining to gain respect and genuine loyalty even from people outside Nazarick. Because they see that unlike the utterly monstrous henchmen he commands, Momonga can actually empathize with them, that he to an extent, cares about what happens to them.

The evil stuff in their character sheets, were just some cool background. They were never supposed to be able to indulge these urges. That's the tragedy of overlord. No. Their race, skills, and Negative Karma affects their personality in some way. I think Nigredo is a good example of this in where her Character is your average horror cliche but due to her positive Karma plus her affinity with babies (dolls), she disobeyed Ainz's orders and saved the children captured by Nazarick instead of endlessly rocking the crib on her room as her setting says.

I've got a theory about Ains. Not sure if this is a thing explained already in the LN or not, I just noticed it in the anime and thought it might be cool. I think the episodes we see in Ain's POV with him being a little nervous, not speaking with that threatening tone, making mistakes and overall sounding a little unsure about himself, is the way he actually is, basically an average gamer human who's in this crazy situation. And that's part of the fun. However, all the other episodes, when we see Ains, we are actually seeing him from someone else's POV, basically every time we don't hear his thoughts, it's not his POV, and that's where he appears to be this amazing genius undead overlord. The reason being is because of the passive skills that are active or just maybe the benefits that come from his class/species or both. To everyone else, because of these active skills, no matter how human he is, no matter how many words he stumbles through, he always appears like an overlord. I think this is why a lot of the smarter characters, like Albedo, Demerge or even the Emperor simply don't see right through him and always assume that he is doing the things he does because of some nefarious master plan instead of the simple truth and justify all the random straightforward things he does as part of this grand plan that they just don't understand.

The funniest thing is that Pandora’s Actor actually knows what Ainz is going through. He knows he is an NPC and he also knows Ainz is human and he is in his Overlord form. He also think Ainz is forgetting a few things and doesn’t know if he should tell Ainz or not. What is interesting that you have to notice in the anime but is mentioned in the Light Novels is that Ainz thinks in 2 different ways. He thinks in his original mind and in his “Overlord” mind. When he thinks in his Overlord it is written like it is in the third person. It actually is in the 2nd person but most Americans and Europeans don’t usually see that writing style/ mindset. In book 16 they start to touch on that matter even more. Book 18 is where the real fun begins and many questions from the beginning of the series start to get answers.

There was also a lot of dialogue between Ainzach and Ainz regarding the Adventurers Guild’s future. That conversation had also explained why Ainz went the empire in the first place. In the novel Ainzach basically asks why Ainz was scouting in the empire when his institution to train adventurers was still under construction. He suggested building that first and then find promising candidates in the Sorcerer Kingdom to train into strong adventurers. Than once they had built a reputation the offer might attract more members to join. Ainz than explained to the guild master that the reason why he found Ainz’s proposal so enticing was because he was once an adventurer whose dreams were crushed by reality. There are many adventurers that have had to learn the struggles of risking their life for meager pay and having to climb up the ranks for a better lifestyle. Yet many such adventurers had already fled from Ainz’s kingdom, meaning most candidates that were left would be ignorant of such things. So it was questionable if people that had never gone through such experiences would be as interested in joining Ainz’s guild over another. Also since they were uncertain as to how many candidates their guild would receive once the offer was out, it would be precarious to finish building their establishment first. Ainz referred to the concept as “constructing a vessel without having any idea as to how much you would need to store within it.” Therefore by promoting a guild, that is in the process of being built, in a country with many current and aspiring adventurers was a test. To Ainz it was the perfect way of determining an estimate as to how many recruits their guild would need to accommodate once it was complete.

From my understanding Runes are a variant on weapon enhancement like Enchantments. My assumption from my interpretation of the novel's vague explanation is that Runes are equal to Enchantments. Enchantments require a High Level Magic Caster to enchant the weapon while Runes can be inlaid by a High Level Smith. They both fulfill the same niche thus a weapon cant retain both upon it. Additionally Runes are more cost effective as one person is required to create the weapon where as a enchanted weapon requires a smith and High Magic Caster and their MP. Another assumption from my interpretation is that the Rune weapons from Yggdrasil are simply interpreted the same as Enchanted weapons. Now where Maruyama can add additional value to this difference is to have an enemy type or organization who specializes in the nullification of enchanted weapons and are thus still defeated by a adventure hit team from The Sorcerer Kingdom decked out in Rune-Gear.

Yesn't. Its a pretty straight port of the D&D Draconic and Giant runes (not to be confused with the Dwarven "arcane and divine magic through weak versions of effectively divine word/power word" classes that are effectively just wizard and cleric PRC that fiddle with spell failure chance). Simply put, the crafter trades away far more time (1 year+) and have to succeed on a very difficult task instead of spending a shorter time (1 week to 2 months depending on specialization in crafting and classes), but far more gold in other materials, the spells ready or known required and in almost every case a ok chunk of XP. Same as in overlord, the main hurdle is finding/learning the runewords to be able to actually do anything useful AND that without super rare options (or going into epic) the runes cant have metamagic effects (the silent/twin/maximized/etc Ainz and co often use).

If I remember correctly runes offer no bonuses in Yggdrasil, there is no rune system in the game to make weapons stronger. If they are on items from that world they are just a cosmetic effect

Not quite. Runes was part of the lore, but, there was no actual game-system or profession for it. You see a similar thing in IRL MMO's, in World of Warcraft, for instance, when you get a weapon of green or higher quality, that means that the item, is, lorewise, either enchanted, or rune-forged... Because the stats it grants the wielder/wearer of the item, are a magical effect, that enhances the wielder/wearer, lorewise. If the weapon has visible runes on it, cosmetically speaking, then, lorewise, that weapon is enhanced with runes, not enchantment, but in terms of gameplay mechanics however, you don't really see or notice a difference, aside from the cosmetic appearance... From the players perspective, runes or not, a purple-quality sword is still a purple quality sword. Ainz knows this, because he's an avid MMORPG gamer, and a roleplayer, he knows a lot of lore about Yggdrasil (Takes one to know one, I roleplayed a lot on WoW. ;D)... So he's hoping to actually make use of that knowledge, whereas he couldn't do that in Yggdrasil. :P Since rune-forging is cheaper than enchantment, it is IMMENSELY valuable. Especially once the rune-smiths actually manage to surpass the 6-rune limit... Lore, is all of a sudden, useful in a practical way now. So as for the sword's appearance being cosmetic, the answer is relative... In the game, it was cosmetic (because it's just a lore detail, there was no separate mechanical function behind it), but in the new world, it's very much real.

I just love the fact that Everyone constantly Overestimates him. Like no other ever bothers to Challenge him about much if anything. Thats why when the Guild Leader gave him some feedback, he appreciated it cause it gave him more input about what's going on. Instead of Constantly being told that He's smart and if they don't understand it, it's because their too stupid too. When in reality, he doesn't know jack shit either and is literally winging it as he goes lol. I feel like Ainz always welcomes a Challenge, but because people overthink and Overestimates him, he's often given the Win before he even does anything yet. Vampires are indeed undead, but even in D&D (unless the person becomes a vampire spawn and is stuck that way for a long time before turning into a real vampire) they are among the most human/living of undead due to retaining their full memories, being conscious of their alignment shift and gaining perverse versions of their most intense/important emotions which only fade with centuries of boredom and pure hunt/hunger unless they become a Vampire Lord (aka the template 2e called True Vampire)/Lifedrinker/Darklord/Shadow Creature/etc (said options typically let the vampire be non-chaotic, reinvigorate their emotions or just one side of them, make them more human by chaining their soul to something they would have felt guilty about or just plain go so crazy they become sane again), especially if one adds the optional undead hunger rules that let vampires ignore a certain amount of weaknesses after feeding and along with it let them make Dhampyrs the "natural" way. Vampires are living undead, more accurately, they're parasitic undead. They are the closest to being alive than other forms of undead. They have actual physiology, unlike a skeleton or mummy, for instance. So they're just as prone to emotions as mortal races are. We could argue what it is that creates emotional states in fantasy settings too. In the World of Warcraft universe, having a soul is what gives you the capacity for emotion... Which is why Liches in WoW don't have emotions, they are entities operating on pure willpower. Due to how Lichdom works, their phylactery containing their perfectly bound soul, projects the mind of the Lich into a magically conjured avatar. So while their mind is inside the avatar, they are devoid of emotion, because their mind and soul, are separate, with their soul being locked inside an object and hidden away somewhere and kept safe from anyone trying to destroy it. Ainz seems to actively purge emotions though, so he's actually HAVING emotions all the time, so it seems to me it's some manner of enchantment, or magical effect that periodically checks for emotions, and purges them... Just to sort of mimic the state of mind that Liches typically are known for, which leads me to believe Ainz is just sorta, a regular skeleton mage, just a high level one... Pretending to be a Lich... But that's based on WoW lore standards. I don't know Yggdrasil lore, so, i can't say much beyond that. xD Some interpretations of Liches are different, based on the fantasy universe in question, there are many interpretations of mythological creatures out there. Japanese fiction-writers for instance, tends to prefer to portray Orcs as large pig-inspired humanoids... Western depictions of orcs usually involve green skin, tusks, and big muscles. ;)

I believe ainz not is not faking anything he's just innocent on the fact that he is a lowkey genius ruler, one of his guildmates said before that no one can lead ainz oal gown guild except him and if ever someone did it will be its downfall. I may be wrong.

who else think that melee touch debuff on a magic caster is absolutely useless? you're never going to use them against a melee specialist, nor you'll be able to use against a ranged specialist.

I don't think this came from his caster levels. Rather it probably came from his undead levels, after all he did agree to the "no magic" rule

Question: In the future if someone from nazarick dies then would ainz be able to revive them? Because in season 1 we saw ainz reviving shaltear it took nearly all of his riches so if unfortunately someone dies then how would he revive them? Well I know it would need magic but would it need a lange sum of money too? Btw how rich is Ainz? Considering his treasury we saw in S1 it did have money but now it's used up in shaltear's revival and does Ains only have very rare items in his treasury? I'm just curious about these things, I'm not a LN reader soi want to know. 😁

Ainz has magical box, if you put objects in it, the box gives you gold coins. He uses it to see what items from the NW has to best exchange rate, and then he starts to farm it or produce it in mass !

I wouldn't call Ainz-sama apathetic, I'd call him pragmatic with a tendency to hoard (like many rpg players) things and people that he finds interesting (like he wanted to recruit Gazef). And he wants good pr for his kingdom and himself.

I recently read through that volume. I believe at one point, Ainz thinks to himself that he should get in Melee combat practice just in case he suddenly loses his casting ability. Which is why he didn't use perfect warrior for this fight. He went in to test himself on his own merits for that reason. In the book, he even comments about how the staff he uses was crafted when he was around level 30, and that his guildmates would scold him for not making a new one at his level, even in a fight like this. There were a lot of little interactions in this episode that got cut. This made the episode feel very rushed to me, compared to how it was laid out in the books. An example would be how tedious it was for Ainz to interact with Fluder because he had to scan the location for Teleportation traps or Delay magic because the location where Fluder was held up didnt contain any protection from magical interference. Or that Fluder admitted there was a spell that allowed for him to temporarily read the book of the dead, but it was inefficient and draining. I'm also confused why they left out the scene with Albedo and Demiurge regarding the Vassal-State agreement. But that scene alone doesn't do anything without greater context.
