Dude, he’s going in and out of freestyling off the dome mixed with rhymes in the tuck. Believe it or not, he’s known for insane rhyming off the dome in the moment, sometimes sprinkled with written bars in the tuck, but more often it’s STRAIGHT OFF THE DOME. He mastered this off the dome style sprinkled with unheard writtens through battle rapping at The Shelter in Detroit, going through cyphers one after another, as well as competition battle rap. It’s so impressive that yes it can sound like it’s all written. But when you know his penchant for off the dome rapping and then listen to his freestyles, it becomes mind blowing; hard to believe yes, yet it’s 💯true.

I disagree. Ppl have been saying Eminem is one of the best off the top freestylers ever and I've never heard him prove it past the Early 90's. And even those off the top freestyles we're just cool compared to people like Harry Mack. This dude MAY have spit a couple lines from this video off the top but no more than that.

What makes him a master of the highest order, is that no matter how grounded or wacky his topics get, he never has to bend grammar or syntax to make it work- it always reads perfectly. He says outlandish stuff but he says it exactly the way he would say it , no filler sounds or nothin.these days he even has multiple entendres at the same time, so he is safely the best rhymer in recorded history.

Yeah, I know for a fact he has re-used certain lines before in freestyle, either first then on track, or track then in freestyle. Also, lines on tracks are from other tracks, too. But, these are shockingly rare considering he has published tens of thousands of lines over 300 songs. Also, he has spoken about this fact before: it's never full off the top, it's always semi-written. He said that, 'it's ammo he has ready if he needs it'. Some things are ready for certain settings; other dots he connects on the day (such as here with Tim), and others he most likely writes beforehand for it, or else just makes it up. Sometimes it's 'deep storage', as it were -- just things he has for any usage at all. Naturally, sometimes, lines are re-used, as a result -- but not often at all. His speed and perfection at all times, though, is fucking inhuman, even when pre-written (classic freestyle, let's say), invented, or re-used. Lest we forget, most top freestylers pre-wrote shit. That's how 'freestyle' battles worked in the 1980s and 1990s. Em can still do solid true freestyle, but his mixed is always best. But, the key thing is not that he mixes it, but that his mixed is better than everybody else's pre-written, let alone true freestyle! He once said the only person better than him was Proof (in freestyle terms). I also heard that Biggie was not bad, though much of Biggie's stuff (if not all) was pre-written. Em also has an unstoppable musical ability. He doesn't even need a beat or anything to find his pockets and his classic 'flow', along with the way he speaks and bends English, but if you throw something at him, he can use it perfectly. He is known to re-use rock tracks (always with permission, of course) for his songs. Some of his best intros/themes and beats have been taken from the likes of Aerosmith, for example. He clearly likes music and studies it, and knows what can be used for himself -- and if it already exists, he tries to borrow it; if it doesn't exist, he just invents it (or Dre does). None of that generic computer-made shit, either. Throw in his genius-level dry wit and black comedy, and harsh jabs (from his old battle days, mostly), and you have yourself a master at work, at every level. He's old school, done to perfection. P.S. You can almost always see it in his eyes, the gears turning, and how he is trying to connect the dots, and recall the lines, at every moment, at least three layers deep. He's a fucking demon-machine. Ain't nobody better ever picked up the mic. Without question. He got underneath rap like nobody else, before or since.

This is straight up off the top. If he writes something, it never has any close studders. His vocal abilities and from the way his brain is wired, he's always rhyming in his mind and he has a massive database of rhyme schemes that may be prethought, but not pre-written. Harry Mack's freestyles are full of pre-written fillers and he cleverly works in the words he's given. I'm not taking anything away from Harry but look at Eminems face when he gets in the zone. Before he blew up, he would scribble rhymes based on a keyword he would randomly pick out of the dictionary that had multiple syllables in them and list words or phrases that rhymed with each syllable. Like diabolical and "die-a-ball-lick-a" I was skeptical at first but there's a "rare" freestyle where Em is doing exactly what Harry Mack does but someone is giving him a different word during the freestyle and has no idea what word is coming next but somehow keeps the flow going while switching to the next word. Another reason that gives evidence that this is off the top is that it's dark and Fd up cause he was just getting started and he was hungry. But the look in his eyes is how I know this is off the top. He's probably thought of the bars but I've come to accept that he's just that talented and is capable of doing things that seem impossible. The last people with these types of minds were Tesla and da Vinci, and maybe a few more. They used their minds for different things but the commonalities are the social awkwardness cause they have next level advanced OCD, unquenchable curiosity, strong mental fortitude, don't give a F, confidence, but not hubris, and their mind never stops.

Yeah it have changed over time mainly because rappers wouldn't off the top freestyle in radio so they would look ill and it would for sure be in the bag and not a mess up when the word still meant off the top. Then battle rapping came back into fashion and it was just changed to everyone knowing it is written from the get go. Those things changed the meaning to be more broad and just being able to ride random beats even if it's written. First people were defending the rappers that yeahyeah it's off the dome but overtime no one could say that since the knowledge spreads even if it's slow. People like Juice can freestyle pretty much like this off the dome as older so there is a chance it isn't written with Em who wasn't far from him in 90's with this (he lost rap olympics to him). Who knows, they barely remember the chorus they wrote for this even tho the raps they do which is weard. I lean on written for few reasons but wouldn't be suprised to be wrong (there is not enough modern or that era Em freestyle stuff out so it's hard to know). Depends how much did he kept on doing it. Also it needs to be remembered how old this clip is so I say written, Juice can freestyle like crazy now because that's all he still does but that's now closer to what this is. Then there is Harry Mack who does some unnatural crazy stuff with freestyle.

Which is why I said off the top after. He did a lot of prewritten and a couple freestyle bars. The only part that I wasn’t sure about whether or not it was freestyling was the last few bars of the first verse. Everything else was clearly written.

This is late but first vs second vs third person is pretty straightforward. First person would be when addressing yourself (the first person) to a listener, second person is when addressing the listener (second person) and third person is when addressing someone else (the third person) to the listener. When you refer to yourself by your own name it's considered third person because it sounds to a listener like you're talking about someone else. It would even be this if talking to yourself because you would be the speaker, the listener and the third person you are talking about.

So there are several "persons" in writing, there is first person where the narrator uses the terms I, me, and my to refer to itself, in which the narrator knows only what the main character knows and the story is told through that persons eyes. There is Second Person in which the narrator uses you, your, and yours to refer to itself and is commonly used in instruction manuals. Then there are two types of third person, Third person and Third person omnipotent, both use they, their and their's to refer to the subjects of the story, there can be many subjects and the chief difference is that third person still usually has only one character where thoughts and internal emotions are known to the narrator and in third person omnipotent the narrator knows all and all characters thoughts and internal emotions can be shared with the reader.

There are very few people that rap completely off the top. And if you sit down the think how many hours rappers have spent rapping, there’s no actual 100% off the top. They may change the meaning or the premise of the bar, but they still have a part in the bag.

3am, Cold Wind Blows, Music Box, Insane, and Buffalo Bill are a few of the darkest Eminem tracks that are brilliant as are all his tracks but they're about serial killer, murder from the murdered pov, rape, and every dark and depraved thing that exists pretty much. 3am will give you beautiful nightmares. The track Kim is probably the most Fd up track there is. When he performed it live during a show Kim was in the audience for, she tried to kill herself that night. The whole sticks and stones thing does not apply to Eminem. He's ruined careers, lives, lucrative endorsements, and reputations but he also saved lives and inspired millions to get clean, chase their dreams, and simply get through an episode of depression and motivate them to hit the gym hard instead of taking the day off. The Rock has said he has more than a few Eminem songs in his workout playlist.. if I looked like the Rock, a mirror would be all the motivation I need to work out

I think with any freestyle, rappers always have a few bars or punch lines ready, but putting it all together with what would be an unknown beat is not that easy.

oh this is DEFINETLY a freestyle, he may have some bars here and there that repeats in/from tracks because it fits in. but his freestyles is basically a collection of bars sewn together with some off the dome stuff. i agree that most freestyles are not off the dome, but EM's are only partially written at worst, i mean the guy came up as a short white battle rapper, he had to have a quick mouth to survive. and the guys reads the fucking dictionary for fun, he has memorized words and rhymes we don't even know exist yet

Nah this is definitely free style. Maybe some memorized material here and there or fillers, but definitely free style. You act too much like your opinion is "matter of fact" just because you have a little clout in hip hop, but you are clearly uneducated in the arts of freestyling. You should look into Harry Mack. Or some other amazing battle rappers and other freestylers off the dome like Juice, Super Nat, K. Los, Black Thought, etc.
@Wickit96
@Wickit96 Жыл бұрын
It depends on what you consider a freestyle I believe, because Eminem has and impeccable memory and has said it before as well as Royce and Mr. Porter talking about his freestyling. He has hundreds. If not, probably thousands by now, of written punchlines that he just knows of but never used and so he would always try to work those in for rap battles especially and go off the top in order to make his punch lines he remembers fit into the scheme, which is what a lot of this was, but as far as everything being completely off the top and on the spot like what Harry Mack does, he definitely had some that he did but nowhere near Harry level

Question: how do you know when someone is or isn't freestyling? Because claiming that you don't think Eminem isn't a 100% freestyling but claiming Harry Mack is isn't fair. How are you a 100% sure that Harry Mack is rapping off the top?

Tim Westwood is a British radio personality. Spaz is a derogatory term for mentally handicapped people there. With freestyles you’re sitting there thinking about it for a while before you even get to perform so they might have a line or two in pocket, but it’s true free-styling. EMINEM came up off of freestyle battling.

I feel that Em being a true student of hip hop from the 80's and 90's, when they rapped about the streets, the dope game, how violent it was and violence they've did, seen or heard about. Em being white he rapped about the kind of violence that white people did. I think that's why a lot of his songs sound like it's about a serial killer. I might be wrong but that's how it seems to me.
