Loose dogs can decimate all your animals in one afternoon. Goats, chickens, any animals you hold dear. Pens and fencing are the only things that work and dogs will dig under your fence. I found out the hard way. Dogs killed 22 goats I had in a fenced pasture in one day while I was at work. A neighbor saw them. It was two adult dogs and one half grown pup. My goats had babies as well. All gone! I'm still heartbroken over it....

Sorry about your cat. The deck should have the joists running in the other direction (90deg.) The shorter direction gives better structural support but more importantly you would be attaching the joists to a bolted header which is much stronger than your nailed ends. Joist hangers can be and should be added when you can.

Matt for a deck, the recommended procedure is to cut a notch in the post, so the cross member is flush with the post surface, and then bolt them in, that the bolts are not carrying a load, and just maintaining the joints integrity . For the joists they make a thing called a joist hanger, which allows you not to have nailing into the end grain. Really looks good and it might not last as long as it could, but by then your house will be done. Sorry to hear about you little cat, never good to lose an animal friend...cheers PS. I built a deck on top of a garage 18 years ago, any failure would cost me a roof as well, so I studied up long and hard so as to have the safest structure....Cheers

❤💔 Sorry for your loss Mates , very sad I hv lost kitty's over the year to tragedy IT took me a long time to be able to get the material & built myself but I now hv two cat pens That I can hv my kitty's in when they are not out or inside with me ONE is a old big cubby house & proper cage with half roof fully secure, tied down ect The other is like a day pen made from pallets with lots of bedding ,it also goes up into a tree ,so they can climb so high and bird watch HA ha They love there homes & feel safe I want to join them together at some stage with a door that can let them easily be put from one to the other GR8 DECK 😍

We always had livestock guardian dogs, they protect everything on your farm. You can let the goats free range during the day while you’re working and the dog will keep them out of harms way. We had Anatolian shepherd’s. They are huge, but they prefer the outside life, they are easy to train as their instinct is to guard and protect.

Matt just to be helpfull with your fraiming technique and designs.. Nails don't hold lumber up, or bear any load. Nails only hold lumber in place.. With fraiming one piece of lumber sits on top of the one bellow it, the nail just hold it in place. You bolted your rim joist to the posts thats fine, but you should put lumber at the post under the rim joist down to the concrete, to bear the weight of the deck. The bolts are bearing the weight of the entire deck, everything and everyone that you put on it.. Now that you have nailed your floor joists to the inside of the rim jois,t instead of sitting them on top, you will need use hanger brackets to support them. Make sure you use the correct hanger bracket, nail or screw that the bracket calls for. Simpson storng Tie is a big supplier of fraiming hardwhere.. I always enjoy and look forward to watching the two of you interact im glad you started the home stead because i enjoy building stuff content when you guys finishe the boat I thought well i guess im moving on but now i get to watch the two of build a homestead..

Even though it doesn't matter what you call-it , I always called them , cross members and joists. Sure missed your show while you were grieving your babies, happy to have you back. I sure would have liked to see joist hangers installed for a longer term stability , but you can add them in the future if they make sense to you.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your kitty. It always sucks to loose a furry buddy know matter how it happens. You both have done a great job rescuing and taking care of stray critters. Unfortunately, when you have outdoor kitties in a rural area things can happen where they can get in over their head. The deck and supporting structure may offer some good safe places to hide as well as give everyone a nice place to hang out.

Cats are like light bulbs, they brighten your life, relieve tension, and show appreciation in their own way. They love,play,hunt. We can learn a lot from cats, and dogs. Sorry about what happened, cats really live a dangerous life, naturally. Put a center support in your deck, ( maybe a 4x4” with a few cinder blocks, use some “liquid nails” on the joints, just back out the bolts a little, and squirt it in. That deck will be tight! You won’t believe what a deck can accumulate, lol!( my best Vincent Price laugh). Love you guys from a distance! Go sailing, it will be good therapy.

Matt, I am DIYer and recently went to all new battery power drills based on a suggestion from my professional carpenter friend and it is a game changer. If you can upgrade to newer 20v drills and drivers it will be a great upgrade as you continue to work, best of luck. Also I grew up on a farm here in the Midwest, loss of animals is an unfortunate reality. Love those you have but you will lose more unfortunately

Does your hardware store have joist hangers? They give more strength and support for your joists. Kinda of metal shelves for the ends of your boards.

Right. Plus run the joist the other way (opposite what they did) more strength less flex on floor, and can run longer and lighter deck boards easier to handle less cuts). Now there’s gonna be all those cuts along the camper wall.

Put fence post from the ground to the bottom of the deck with a 3 to 4 inch spacing so the cats and chickens can slip under there and the dogs won't be able to get at them. I would leave a gate somewhere so that you can get in there as well though in case they decide to reproduce under there or whatever. lol

Joists should always run the narrow span. Better strength, load bearing, and overall rigidity. Running length wise like that could leave it prone to warping and twisting. Since it's just a deck, it probably won't mean shit

Sorry about your loss. We lost a pregnant cashmere goat to a roaming dog 2 weeks after we bought her. After that, we kept the shotgun close. And I know it sounds bad, but our neighbors huskies got loose, and broke into our barn to get at our sheep and we shot them. The farmer understood and wasn’t angry. We felt bad that we had to do that but it was our livestock.

That's a tough one. I love my cat. So I know how you feel. Make sure the trailer is jacked up off of the tires. You don't need the trailer settling down and having the door catch on the deck or worse. Best wishes to you both.

GREAT! to see you back on KZbin! Is that a slight tilt to outward in deck floor? If so-that is GOOD - it will take any rain that may blow onto it AWAY from the trailer. As far as protecting the animals - I made a heavy chicken wire cage for our 4 ducks-AND buried some 19-gauge square 1/2 in mesh underground all around at 2 feet deep (a lot of animals can dig real good!). Maybe a raised cage with a good floor is easier where you are? How about one on part of that new deck to put animals in security if you leave for some reason?

8:35 It also helps a lot to use a rasp to round off the end of the bolt. 👍 Also, with smaller bolts and using bolt cutters, you put the nut as close to where you are turning as possible. That way the nut will prevent the bolt cutters from reforming the bolt at the cut.

The knee braces for the roof are most useful on the corners this will stiffen the entire structure. Use 4 foot 4x4s ends cut at 45 degrees. Use big structural screws to fasten them. I feel the pain and guilt of your loss, time will help as will talking about it.

So sad for your loss. Here in Costa Rica we have 6 cats, bought one Persian, all the rest are rescue kittens, either drop offs, like yours or just found baby kittens yowling in the rain. If they are the neighbor's dogs you can't be shooting them but can't let them decimate your livestock, either. My suggestion is a livestock dog, bred to protect your herd. A Great Pyrenees would fill the bill. They live with your animals and would give their life protecting them from anything that would harm them. Just a thought. Welcome back, we missed you!

Unfortunately this may happen again unless steps are taken to prevent it. Whether it’s neighbors roaming dogs or wild feral cats, fur babies are at risk. Their neighbor has two roaming dogs…Great Pyrenees is at risk. Solution is keep family fur babies in a safe contained area, free from exposure to wild animals. Cant control neighbors dogs or wild feral cats. I would stop the deck build and construct a screened in cat play / safe house…easy project! Cats would be safe, happy and most importantly live a long life.
