These comments are a dumpster fire… First - the train was the E80006. I was on it. Second - we were doing less than 50 MPH. Top speed allowed for freight on the Grand Rapids sub where this was taken is 50. You cannot exceed it. Period. Third - there were 130 cars. There is almost always 130 cars on these particular coal trains. Sometimes a few less, but never more without special authorization as it makes the train too long for the DP. Finally - while it looks like this dude was close, he wasn’t even in the ballast. Was he close? Yeah. Was he close enough for me to be concerned? Nope. If we derailed at that speed, he could be 200+ feet away and it wouldn’t matter.

As a Former Csx Freight Conductor, alittle advice, that's the last place I'd be wanting to stand if I were you im just trying to help. I know u want the footage, but it's really dangerous to be that close, I had no choice because it was my Job, but even we were uncomfortable standing that close to moving equipment especially 1 going 60 mile an hour but this 1s doing 70. alot of times we would be on a siding watching another train pass us to make sure they had no hot wheel bearings and or other defects as they pass by, so times we were limited to safe places to stand n watch, but if you new the hazards of doin this you would certainly reconsider. I'll give u an example, if you were standing that close and 1 of them rail cars had a piece of sharp metal hanging off the side of the cars or something that could latch onto you what do u think could happen? Again this is not a lecture this is me helping paint a picture. It's all love buddy 👊🏾🙏🏼 Be safe and nice catches.

Like others in the comments im kinda interested at which speed the train is passing by. i would guessed something around 70 mph (~115kph), but some say the speed limit on this track is 50mph. so I did the math. it takes the train roughly 97 sec to pass by. Since im from germany and used to the metric system i first converted the units. so, 7,038 feet ist 2145.18 meter. That means, the train is doing around 22 meter every second. multiplied by 3600, we get 79.6 kilometers per hour, which is exactely 50mph (80kph=50mph). note, the 97 seconds are no exact estimate (+-1 second). so, the 50mph-speedlimit guys are right. sorry for my bad english........

@@CMuth-dt7fn You’re closer than anyone I’ve challenged this with. Actual speed(mph) is 97. Total travel time from breach entry to exit by distance traveled = 97 mph. @@DESUDESU24 the speed on this line is 50 MPH for freight. So the fastest the train shown here could be going is 50 MPH. BNSF has no lines that allow 75 MPH for freight. 70 is the max speed on BNSF on the lines that allow it.
@DESUDESU2414 күн бұрын
@@FFred-us9tw Interesting, I did read that BNSF was a customer for one of the versions of the GE Evo locos that can do 75 MPH, odd that they have no rail meant to do that speed. Then again, reading now, it appears it was an EPA concern, not a speed concern, and the fact that only two of the 3 axles per truck are powered likely means that it keeps material and repair costs down, though I do need to read into this more. But if this line is only 50MPH, I wonder if there's some unintended camera angles going on that makes it look faster than it's actually going.
@FFred-us9tw14 күн бұрын
@ the max speed of locomotives is part of the design from the manufacturer unless a railroad specifically orders a higher than normal speed. The speed is dictated by gear ratio. Other than Intermodal equipment most freight cars are not even rated for speeds above 70 MPH anyhow. The max speed a railroad chooses has nothing to do with EPA regulations. It’s based on a number of factors that come down to cost more than anything. The higher the speed the higher the maintenance costs associated with rail and wheel wear. You also have an added fuel cost and then the logistics of scheduling. The faster your priority trains travel the harder it is to run conventional freight which operates at lower speeds as well as faster travel times means terminals need to work faster to process loading and unloading. The FRA is the only federal agency that has any real say over railroad operating rules and speeds. The reason these videos look so fast is just camera angles and lighting. There are videos of Amtrak trains going 150 that don’t even look that fast
