Huge head and paws, I have never seen any bear on the island being anything but solid black fur, maybe a white patch on chest. I wonder if that is matted fur shedding due to heat

When bears raise their heads like sniffing, and open their mouths as if tasting the scents, is that what's happening?

They are breathing out when they do that, they suck air in through their nostrils to get the scent and expel through their mouth. Just like dogs will do. Raising the head means they are picking up a scent in the air rather than on the ground or an object.

Color phased Black Bear. I would call that a chocolate

Ursus americanus, black bear. And a nice one at that. Sort of a cinnamon/chocolate one. Black bears come in colors other than black. They can be brown, cinnamon, chocolate, blonde/white like the spirit bears and even Glacier bears which are gray/blue. Those are found around the Alaska/Yukon/BC border area. That's a big one, I'd like to see him fattened up at the end of summer/early fall.

Yeah, that boy is big. Looks to me to be an older bear, possibly little past his prime? A friend of mine got a black bear like that back in the late 1980's. He estimated the boar weighed in excess of 500 lbs., (don't know the exact weight) which is very big for California's Sierra Nevada range. We had to dress and then cut him up to pack him out.
