Well, to be fair, this was a stunt. There really has not been any real innovation in guitar since the 80s. By Innovation, I mean something new that made kids by the millions begging their parents to buy them a guitar. That was the effect that Hank Marvin, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, and Eddie Van Halen had. There are probably less than a dozen people in the world with the talent to use this Hydra guitar (and I'm probably being generous). Don't get me wrong - there are extremely talented players in the world today, but their playing is derivative of what came before. The electric guitar was invented around 1950, and in the first 30 or 40 years after that, great guitarists have pretty much discovered everything you can do with it. In the 60s, 70s and 80s, and even some in the 90s, you would hear musical trends and styles and techniques you had never heard before. But I have not heard any modern music that could not have been recorded 20 years ago.

This is actually his 3rd triple neck. Of course, this one goes WAAAAAAYYY beyond what the previous ones capabilities. The first was a heart shaped one that had three 6 string guitars. The second had a 12 string and two 6-string guitars one with a whammy bar and one without. Then there's the Hydra. One semi-fretless bass, a 7-string, a 12-string half fretless, harp strings, and effects built in. He does also have a double neck that has a standard 6-string with a whammy bar and a fretless 6-string. I'm certain that he's from Krypton.

He has another video on his channel that shows off the features of this guitar, aptly named The Hydra. The top neck is a 12 string guitar that's fretless beyond the 9th fret & has piezo switches for that neck. The middle neck is a 7 electric string guitar. The bottom neck is a 3/4 length headless 4 string bass that's fretless on the top two strings. It also has a 13 string harp on the bottom of the guitar body, plus a bunch of other knobs & switches that I couldn't even try to explain what they do. Steve Vai stated in an interview he was going for a steampunk look for this guitar, gave his idea to Ibanez to design, & it took 3 1/2 years to have this guitar built once they came up with the final design.

This is what you get when you take a guy like Steve Vai and lock him up for 2 years because of covid-19. He goes down stairs to his underground laboratory and in the first year he builds a guitar like no other. And in the second year he learns how to become a master at playing it.And now he re-emerges to perform this.

That version is certainly good but I personally think having to sync perfectly with the orchestra constrains Vai's improvisational abilities. I still love the "For The Love Of God" - G3 1996 version where Steve just sails into another musical universe and does things with a guitar few others have even dreamed of. But there are no wrong choices here. Vai is a humble genius.

Hey Alex. Steve recently had some surgery that basically didn't allow him to strum the guitar. I think it was rotator cuff surgery. He was still practicing using his left hand to make ALOT of amazing music. This guitar was I spired by that and other things. It is a half fretted/fretless bass on the bottom, a 7 string electric in the middle and a half fretless/fretted 12 string electric on top. These is also a set of strings on the left set up for droning like sitar sounds. He also has some built in kill switches and effects that he can press for certain sounds. It is truly amazing!

Dude, you should see him in concert. Absolutely phenomenal. I saw Stave in concert in 2003 with Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen, after leaving that concert, I had a headache, it was not from the volume, it was from watching all that talent in one night and setting especially when all three were on stage for the encore. I often say that Steve Vai has forgotten more about playing a guitar than anyone will ever know. Seeing him live was as close to a religious experience as I have ever had. Funny that you mention Ralph Macchio as he was in a movie called Crossroads from 1986 where he had to play against Steve Vai at the end of the film. Cutting heads. It became a song called Eugene's Trick Bag.

So his whole beautiful monstrosity of a guitar looks like a 12 string half fretless up top, a “normal” (if you can even say that for this) seven string in the center, and a headless 4 string bass on the bottom. That is insane.

Steve Vai of course is one of the guitar masters. He always seems to play beautiful music pieces. I can only imagine that guitar is custom made. Like something he made himself.

the bass neck looks like a Steinberger-style headless, the top neck is a 12 string with (i think?) MIDI pickups and a fretless board above the ocatve mark, the middle neck is a 6-string setup where he gets his straight-up guitar tones and i have no fucking idea what's going on at the bottom there. to play all of them at once is indicative of his virtuosity. Steve is ostensibly one of the best guitarists alive at the moment.

Top Neck is a 12 string guitar, but just the first half has frets, which makes the fretless part sound like a mandolin. Used to make the rythm guitar on the song Middle Neck is a 7 string guitar, mainly for the solo shit. Bottom Neck is a 4 string Bass, the top middle is fretless as well. And on the Right with the strings in vertical is the harp, basically he just throws some picks there... He's 61 by the way...

The man plays like an octopus - Pia is one lucky lady. I know how much heavy a regular guitar, it must be insane to hold let alone play it. He really needs a thick strap to hold and balance the weight of it. He must have some serious upper body strength. Any normal person would need a stool and a foot rest. Superhuman.

The uppermost neck is a 12 string that is fret less from the 8th fret, the middle is a normal 7 string and the bottom one is a baa that has the upper strings fretless

If you look closely, it's actually a 4 in 1 guitar. A 12 string half fretted, a 7 string, a half fretted bass, plus a set of strings at the very end of the body which he strums as he moves his hand between the 3 necks! Amazing human on an amazing guitar !!!

In a world of exceptional bedroom guitarists, still no-one touches him - he sat back quietly and watched all that was going on in the world and then re-emerged with something that only he could pioneer. I may not be a fan of everything he's put out in later years, but for me there wil only ever be one Steve Vai.
