Abraham's backstory is incredibly sad. The men he killed in the supermarket were actually people his family knew from before the fall and were people he trusted. Abraham went on a run and came back to find out the men had assaulted his wife and kids which is why he reacts the way he does.
@MinSunYe2 жыл бұрын
Abraham's flashback is of around the beginning of the apocalypse or shortly after, can't remember. The men he killed were his military buddies that he trusted and made camp with them. They SA'd his family so he killed them all, frightening his family, since murder like that wasn't such a common occurance yet. When they died, Eugene gave him purpose again, no matter how ridiculous and unbelievable it was. For Abraham, it wasn't about how realistic it was Eugene was telling the truth, it just HAD to be real. There was no room for disbelief. If there was, he would be back to having no purpose in life. This episode with the symbolism in Abraham's hand injury and the flashbacks, it never fails to bring a tear to my eye 😭💔

This is a favorite episode of mine, I have a lot to say about it. The way I have always interpreted the flashback is that those guys were going to either rape or kill his family, and he killed them all essentially with his own two fists. I don’t think he was just paranoid, I think he saved their lives, and they were scared of him because he’s a beast. What I love about the careful acting in this episode, is how you can see Eugene looking at the bodies of Abraham’s family, and seeing Abraham’s distress, but obvious strength and probable military background. **Eugene’s lie wasn’t just to save himself. His lie was to save Abraham from killing himself, as he was literally about to do.** He read the situation for what it was, and read Abraham for who he was, and created a mission he knew that Abraham would latch himself onto. “If I could cheat some people into taking me there, I figured I’d be doing them a solid too” -Eugene. As soon as Eugene says this line, Abraham makes an expression, very well acted and intentionally after this line, Because he realizes that the very first time Eugene said the lie, it was to save Abraham from his despair. The lie DID save Abraham’s life. But it also was nothing more than a bandage on a bad wound. Which is exactly what his hand has. It keeps opening up, and opening up, because it’s the hand he used to beat those guys to death and save his family, but they died anyway, and he hasn’t fully healed from it. His attachment to the mission covered it only temporarily. That cut has not gone away, and neither has his wedding ring on that same hand. He is still scarred. Every time he beats to death the cannibals, or walkers, and it opens up, it’s a device to show how his motivation of the mission goes all the way back to doing it for his family. And when he punches Eugene with that same hand, the wound opens, and it’s like a return to the root cause of his wound, because it all started with the lie. So well constructed.

Comic book spoilers (not really): Those scenes with Abraham are very cryptic bc they can’t show what really happened. In the comics Abraham and his family was staying at a grocery store with a group. Abraham went on a run and when he came back all the men in the group had assaulted (yes in the way ur thinking) his wife, daughter and son. When he found out he killed all of them with his bare hands. They saw and got scared so they ran away when he was sleeping. Which is when he walks outside and sees them dead. At that point he sees no point in living. So you seen him about to shoot himself and then he meets Eugene. Eugene was the only reason he decided to live, bc he wanted to help other people. So when he found out it was all fake, it broke him. The only thing he was living for was a complete lie.
@oceankuhn7215 Жыл бұрын

This was actually a reveal in the comic books as well. A bit different but the same outcome. It's basically revealed that Eugene was just a school teacher. I understand Abraham's reaction. I mean, the lie told by Eugene was basically his whole reason for being AND living. And now it turned out to be a lie and his mission is gone. That's like the worst that can happen to a soldier i think.

@emmaaaa10042 жыл бұрын
Not sure anyone has said this but here’s a fun fact about the scene where the bus caught on fire. The fire was a lot bigger and more intense than the actors had thought it would be. You can see Josh and Lauren (Eugene and Maggie) who are closest break character because of this. Lauren is the first to notice and actually looks back when she feels the intense heat. She then urges Josh to move further away from the fire. You can even see her mouth moving as she talks to him. Obviously it’s a pretty big scene that’s hard to reshoot so they just had to roll with it and keep going but you do see those two (especially Lauren) breaking character a little bit.

This is not a spoiler but this does reference the comics :D This is why the episode can be hard to understand The editors failed to realize how many people have not read the comics and the full story really wasn’t explained well in the flashback scenes. The comics have the Abraham story that his former neighbours/friends brutalized his wife and children while he was away if you look closely in the show his wife Ellen has bruises on her face so it is implied subtly and when Abraham returned and found out what happened he killed the men who did this. His wife and children in the TV show were terrified he murdered those men that’s why they ran away The only way we can reason Abraham killing the men was completely justified is if we know the comic backstory. The problem is that the flashback failed to give the entire picture of why Abraham did what he did and the fact it was near the beginning of the collapse So if you go back in your mind society had just collapsed in the back story so this was not normal behaviour to exact revenge like that. For us as viewers it makes it even harder to understand the reaction of the wife and because the scenes for the backstory were incomplete Just realize that by this time in the story of Rick and our crew we are getting used seeing the brutality of lawlessness and revenge/justice killings (The Claimers and The Terminites deaths) So the connection aren’t easily made to understand Abraham’s back story without knowing the comic story. In the episode if you look carefully you’ll see the bodies of his wife and children on the ground you see a corpse with a red head band this is Abraham’s wife Ellen Then it shows his red headed son face down and piece of luggage on the ground and his daughter to the right also face down This flash is only three seconds long so it is easy to miss and it is right after Eugene is hit and collapses after Abraham beat him When Abraham finds his wife and children dead this is why Abraham was going to kill himself not only because he felt alone/ isolated but also because he felt he had terrified his wife and children and caused them to run away from him and be killed by walkers. Hope that helps to bring some clarity :)

Lol as an American who lives in rural KY, yes, every back road looks identical! I began to get suspicious of Eugene back when he was talking gaming with Tara. I just don't see a brilliant scientist being interested in a video game. Real life, the science, is their entertainment. But I wondered if the writers were just making him out to be some need. And therefore must be a gamer. So I wasn't sure. I felt bad for both of them. So many lost theirives on the hope that Eugene would stop the nightmare. And I could see that Eugene was desperate. And they all have "done the worst kinds of things, just to stay alive". Eugene is no different. And I hated what happened to Abraham. The guilt must be unbearable. At the time these episodes were coming out I didn’t much about the comics. Sadly however I did know about the Eugene thing bc of the comics tho.

This was a good episode. Another where you have to decided what was wrong and what was right? Eugene saves his life and gives him purpose and a reason to live and heal, but with a lie. Eugene is a coward but good at heart and just wants to live.

Again, Rob is keen on having a sense that all is not as it seems with another character. This time it is Eugene! And I agree with what you say about, if Eugene is going to come clean and admit to his deception of everyone, he picked the right time to do so. And this episode, viewing it now for me was even 2⁵more poignant because it reminds me of so many past moments where, were it not for another character, so many others would've perished. Had Morgan not taken Rick into his home and filled him in on how civilization had fallen, had Glenn not used a 2 way radio to help Rick escape the tank that was surrounded by walkers in Atlanta in season 1, if Carol hadn't given Rick the hand grenade which allowed the group to escape the CDC before the building imploded, the list goes on and on. Eventually you will start to see landmarks, and objects, or just quiet moments between characters that will call back these past events, characters and places in the journey of the TV series. You have so much to look forward to, Season 5 is amazing! On to the next episode!!

Eugene is a survivor he used people to survive. He also saved Abraham, he was about to kill himself when Eugene showed up.

I love this episode! Abraham and Rosita need to find a new reason to survive. A new reason to move forward. Eugene's plan hasn't changed he wants to get to DC. Our gang need to decide what to do as they would like to find the rest of our people. This episode changed things for sure!

The backstory of the flashbacks is that Abraham and his family and their neighbors took refuge in the supermarket, and while Abraham was out on a supply run, his neighbors raped his wife, and possibly his daughter; Abraham caught them in the act, and killed them. His wife and children were then terrified of him; he may have had PTSD and several violent episodes before the Breakout.

I'm also ''stressed and depressed'' that tomorrow it's Monday already 😪😂 man so many people really REALLY hated Eugene because of his lie. But I gotta say what would you do in his place ? What other options did he have really? It's sad but it's true.. in this world and at this point of the apocalypse where it's all about survival only you need to make yourself as attractive for other people and give them very good reasons to make you a part of their group. Let's be real: groups like Rick's are rare af, just taking in people no matter their level of skill, where it's just about whether you're a good person or not. And even Rick had his ''no new people''- phase. Eugene is physically weak, socially awkward, slow, has zero fighting abilities, is scared of the walkers, had no friends or people to go back to - he just has nothing that would qualify him as a valuable team member in other people's eyes, as sad as it is. Yes he has a lot of knowledge but most people probably wouldn't care about that at this point in the apocalypse. You look for strong people who can fight, scavange for supplies, protect you and your family.. you wouldn't need someone who'd just slow you down and on top means you have another mouth to feed. So that was literally his only way to survive this somehow and I don't think you can really blame him for it. Yes he deserved the punch but even Rosita quickly realized it doesn't matter. What's done is done. And it isn't like Eugene didn't regret it.. he did but he wanted to survive as well. And btw I never thought about Abraham killing these two dudes at the grocery store in a psychotic breakdown/ paranoia .. wow you might be right tho. It definitely would make more sense, especially his wife's and son's reaction. 👏 I always just assumed these two dudes where terrible people and trying to kill them/ rape them or whatever so he bashed their heads in with a can to protect his family and it was just the first time they had to witness brutal murder like that and they couldn't deal with it 😶 so they were scared of Abraham as a result and ran away .. I always thought his wife was an absolute moron for being afraid of her own husband just because he tried protecting his family 💀.. psychosis definitely makes waay more sense

Such a good episode! Eugene definitely deserved a punch, but not to that point where he knocks him out. But Abraham definitely went too far. I could see all side here and no one was right. I can't really blame Eugene for lying and using his brain to save himself. Should he have told them sooner? Absolutely. But Eugene's brain is his greatest weapon that he has to survive.

They didn’t include this in the show, but this is Abraham’s comic backstory leading up to the scene of him killing the man. While he was on a run, he left his wife and kids behind. The men in their camp assaulted (SA) his wife and kids. When Abraham came back and found out about what they did, he killed them. His family became scared of him and ran away, didn’t get far. Which is when Eugene shows up.
