About that video quality...Out of curiosity and laziness, I tried to use GoPro's full automatic settings to save myself some time when it comes to color correction. Well, it turns out that was a terrible idea. It was dark and rainy which doesn't help, but still, it was sub par to say the least.

Can't say I am used to such heavy breathing from you on the trails. Still, good placing for not being used to doing fivers with climbs. Conditions seemed much better this time around.

As a Dave myself, I can corroborate. Us Daves are pretty good at most all mandatory life-skills (this was gifted at birth)...except for things that seem pointless (like technical climbing in the middle of a race?). Dangerous Dave showed immaculate riding skill! Only cardiovascularly overshadowed by a bean-pole cross-country running Steve, or maybe a swim team MTB crossover named Jeff.

Dave could you do an updated bike check video? It's been 10 months and you've seemed to have changed a lot of your setup, would be sick to see what things you've adjusted! Love the videos.

So...I'm a new backpacker and after going to Colorado and hiking, I realized how huge mountain biking is. My question is, what type of bike do you have and/or recommend and why? I saw a video where there are three types... XC, Enduro, and Downhill. Is that right or do they all have different uses?
@cwwmbm
@cwwmbm 2 жыл бұрын
Not downhill. Downhill bikes are basically incompatible with any climbing and are aimed at going as fast as possible on lift services trails. I'd say get XC because it can ride the same stuff as Enduro (possibly as slightly lower speeds) but you can't go wrong with either. Get ready for 2K service bill every year haha. If you want to combine backpacking and biking (i.e. bikepacking on trails) then a hardtail is best. I ride hardtail everywhere including trails Dave rides in this video, I just have to go slower (which means I'm less likely to get hurt when I fall).
@lukefarrell117

Think of it this way, xc bikes have a 80+% focus on climbing with a little bit of thought gone into how they descend. Enduro bikes are anywhere from 50/50 for 30 climbing 70 descending. Downhill bikes are 100% down and are not meant to be peddled up pretty much anything. In between xc and enduro are ‘trail’ bikes. Those are the best of both worlds often 50/50 or a little more on the climbing side. Look for bikes with travel ranges between 120-160 for ‘trail’ bikes. Full suspension bikes are less efficient climbers, but more comfortable and capable when descending. They are also more complicated and harder to service/set up for a newbie. Hard tails like the other commenter mentioned are kinda like the backpacking of bikes. If you want to get into the sport and not spend multiple thousands, a hard tail is your best bet. If you have thousands burning holes in your pockets, look for a full suspension. Some good brands to look at are, propain, transition, Marin, norco, Rocky Mountain, Scott, canyon, ibis, and yeti.

@@lukefarrell117 wow thanks for the info. I don't know if I'll get into it or not but it sure looks fun. What makes some of these bike worth so much? 5k-8k seems like a lot. (I was checking out Dave's Norco Sight which is where I got the figures)

Speed is a byproduct of smoothness, the smoother you are, the faster you go. You're already about as smooth as it gets so the only way you're going to shave a couple of seconds in an all mountain race is by finessing the terrain a little more. When, what and how much you eat is also a big deal, taking two full days off the bike before the race will give you an edge. poop before the race, drink water before the race, take two aspirin before the race, no pussy before the race and no alcohol before the race. Smoking or eating weed before the race helps some people with the 'artistic side' of choosing a line but i usually only recommend it for DH.... and leave your backpack in the car
