Audi discounted the new car but not its expected value after one year (the residual). Thus, the two values were similar. A lease payment covers the delta, but with the delta near zero, the lease was cheap. A year later, these cars are coming off lease and are worth a lot less than the original residual. Audi could take a bath on reselling the cars or lease them out again so that they don't have to take the bath for another year.

The Regional Team at then Daimler Chrysler, put $7,000 “Cash” to dealer to take STD. Cab RAM from the parking lots at airports, 1,000’s of trucks were built a day that weren’t sold so we sold them to dealers. With the rebates to consumer, and holdback (4%) and Deliver allowance (1%) combined with this $7,000 combined for MORE than the Cap Cost….YEs the dealer could have technically given the Trucks away and made $4,000 Net. Was it actually an error o or a way to help offset year one depreciation knowing they’re gonna have to depreciate it next year just simply by being year end model 2024 instead of 25. Now is that market picks up and people are returning their 12 month leases they’re still able to resell that vehicle at the new discounted depreciated price but that was then offset by the $6000 payment. What this also does for marketing is show that people are currently in the cars driving them around and enjoying them versus having to discount a car because it’s been sitting on your lot for 8 to 12 months so I don’t think this was a mistake. I think this was extremely creative financing by Audi.
