There's a really great quote from Viscant somewhere in which he's saying that he knew that HAD to be his year, 'cause since his execution wasn't as good as most of the other top players, he had to rely in his strategic skill to come up with something before the game was too much 'solved'

Viscant dominated marvel at its infancy and people later figured out its weaknesses and how to deal with his team. RyanLV is the one i truly believe figured out marvel especially at the height and tailend of its popularity his team had too many win conditions and he had backup plans so his team never felt like it falls apart when he loses any one of his characters
@ProzacStylings
@ProzacStylings 5 ай бұрын
RyanLV is a phenomenal player, but his team is far from the peak of marvel and did not have a lasting impact on the (still active) meta. The reality is that phoenix teams lose to Morrigan and Zero teams - either because of meter steal combos, or Zero getting to snap and mix your whole team while you're down an assist and can't use meter. Marvel IS mostly figured out now - some characters are better than they were, like MODOK / Hulk, some are worse, but it's still mostly Zero / Doom / Vergil / Morrigan / Magneto at the top, and Chris G was probably the most significant example.
@TheWorstType
@TheWorstType 5 ай бұрын
100%!! I loved a game Kbrad hosted and I forgot who RyanLV was "playing" - but whoever it was used every resource, exhausted every option, got lucky in every mix-up and actually killed Phoenix. You could almost feel a relief in the crowd, and then Morrigan came in and landed a one hit-infinite and Kbrad said something like "You did it! You did the nearly impossible and took out RyanLV's Phoenix! And here's your prize! A LV5 Morrigan and Chun!" ahahh
@TheWorstType
@TheWorstType 5 ай бұрын
@@ProzacStylings I'm not sure you're point really contradicts his. I agree with his sentiment, at that point Marvel had been out for about 5-6 years and the top 100 was filled with Zero May Crys and Morridoms and the Magnitels and the one off teams like Wolf/Storm/Akuma and Firebrand/Doom/Skrull that were very player specific with tons of practice. RyanLV came onto the scene and destroyed every tournament with an unusual team that nobody could touch- both due to his phenomenal skills, quick judgment and knowledge of the game. After his win, MvC died out. I don't think he was saying that RyanLV's team was the meta, but it was the last year in which a challenger brought an unconventional team up that took everyone by storm. It's easy to say how one team loses to another in theory, but it's different in practice. I think you're right as it relates to MvC being mostly explored, and the only recent new team I've seen make waves was IHeartJustice a few years ago and most recently LiberalTerminator bringing back Nova and Spencer - I don't think there's been any real change to the meta since the mid-teens
@ProzacStylings
@ProzacStylings 5 ай бұрын
@@TheWorstType This is wrong in pretty much every way. For one, 2023 Evo Marvel dwarfed any year where Ryan was a star. It had twice the entrants of 2016. If anything, Marvel was dead while Ryan was making waves, and increased in popularity since. Two, the meta HAS changed significantly. Phoenix was still a top tier contender when Ryan won, there were other serious phoenix contenders, his team was only particularly notable because Chun. Phoenix is no longer top tier. The Zeros and Morrigans today are much better, and Phoenix has very little chance surviving a Zero+assists neutral into snap, and every morrigan contender will land her soul drain combos. There were no phoenix finalists in '23 top 8 evo, it was dominated by the better Zero and Morrigan players, as has been the case with almost all majors for about two years. Lastly, yes, obviously my "his techniques are outdated" directly contradicts the idea that RyanLV "solved" Marvel. The only players that can be considered to have "solved marvel" are the players that pioneered the beginnings of what wins most tournaments now, which is early Zero players and Chris G. Everyone else was just trying less effective techniques and hoping the zero/morrigan they were playing wasn't good enough.
@TheWorstType

@@ProzacStylings So I see in your comments that you have a habit of arguing against things that weren't actually said - and then kind of want to show off your knowledge I guess? I said: After his win, it died out. Which is factual, until the resurgence post pandemic- it didn't even feature until an tiny 2021. His win was the last year it was popular until recently. Two: How are you going to say in your first comment that the meta hasn't changed that much aside from a few changes, and then tell me how drastic the meta has changed, and then only speak on Phoenix? Nobody here said the team is unbeatable or the best. The point being said was that as Marvel died out from public popularity - the peak seemed to be in 2017, which is accurate, and to your point even post the peak. It's getting a new one now, but the game, like YOU said has not changed in any meaningful way considering the top 8s. 2017 was the last time a new, inventive style/team took people by storm and tossed out the old rules, we haven't seen that since. I get that your passionate and knowledgeable but - yes, I'm going to be wrong in everything I say if you keep making up the things you think I said instead of what I actually said. If youll notice, nobody is disagreeing with you - I said your point doesn't contradict his. It's an additional point that's semi-adjacent.

Viscant's wesker was such a beast. Especially when level 3 xfactored.
@sdstig
@sdstig 5 ай бұрын
As a San Diego resident, I've been able to run into Viscant in years past at locals and the like. In Ultimate, he eventually switched to Zero/Doom/Vergil but sometimes in casuals, he'd bring out his vanilla Wesker/Haggar/Phoenix team which I always found fun to watch in Ultimate even with Phoenix haha! I remember him sometimes talking about what would be a theoretical optimal Phoenix team in Ultimate, factoring in the usual things but putting an emphasis on meter build. It's hard to remember all that stuff now but one of the teams he theorized I believe was Zero/Doom/Phoenix, which is the team PZPoy used. Peak Marvel 3 days were so much fun.
@ProzacStylings
@ProzacStylings 5 ай бұрын
The Morrigan expertise that came after Chris G has basically removed Phoenix from top tier. That may or may not be a 'best phoenix team', but any modern Phoenix team is functionally going to be disadvantaged against a Morrigan team or a Zero team with two good assists.
@sdstig
@sdstig 5 ай бұрын
@@ProzacStylings RyanLV, the modern age of UMvC3, and even tier lists and discussions during ChrisG's dominance would say otherwise.
@ProzacStylings
@ProzacStylings 5 ай бұрын
@sdstig Lmao. One, "the modem age of UMvC3" is exactly what proves phoenix is no longer top tier. There were no phoenixes in the $25,000 '23 Evo top 8. None. Events are consistently dominated by a top tier that doesn't involve her. Two, I specifically said "That came after Chris G". Three, what RyanLV says is irrelevant, as are tier lists. Theorycrafting is dogwater in comparison to results, and results prove that phoenix cannot compete on the level of zero/morrigan in the modern marvel. The only legitimate purpose of theory crafting is to attempt to explain results. The explanation for why Zero/Morrigan > Phoenix is easy. Zero has the best snap mixups in the game and gets to use two assists and meter. Morrigan has soul drain combos, and can play aggressively when she wants to use them. The more people perfected the gameplay of Zero and Morrigan, the less possible it became to play against them with one assist and no meter, and expect to keep your phoenix or your meter.

I went to high school in Claremont California with Viscant. I knew him as Jay, and he would battle with me at the YAC right next to the high school, where there were a couple arcade games there. One of which was Marvel Super Heroes and X men vs Street Fighter. We had some legendary battles back then. He had an extremely good Shuma Gorath, and in xmen vs sf i would play my team of Charlie/juggernaut against Viscant. He was definitely one of to toughest players to compete against even back then. It’s funny in hindsight knowing that marvel 3 players were dismissive of Phoenix as a win condition at first glance (if memory serves there were even rumblings at the time that she would be better being played straight up on point, take that with a grain of salt though). I think it was less they were dismissive of Phoenix as a win condition and more thinking it would be foolish to try and do that in a tournament setting. Even really early on in MvC3's life everyone knew how powerful Phoenix was with Level 3 X-factor. I remember the message boards complaining about her. In a Casual setting it's really easy to get her active but less so against skilled players who know how to get the snap back and trap her. The struggles Viscant suffered trying to keep her alive is testament to that.

One of my old roommates was a Wesker main. And yeah, he was usually winning against us in the house when we would play some matches. But eventually I figured out how to use Dante, Deadpool and Amaterasu in an effective enough way to completely shut him out. Amaterasu has some really good stage filling attacks that catch wesker so to speak. Then Deadpool is able to play keep away really effectively, while Dante is better for going in for the blitz. Then both dp and dante have their gun supers, so those combo together nicely; especially with amaterasu bringing down a lightning bolt on the enemy to keep them stationary. Oh, and Amies wind swap move was really useful against Wesker as well. Those two moves of hers, plus the ice shot mode basically made her invincible against Wesker. But if he got her down, DP and Dante came in to clean up.

I remember thinking the team didn't make any sense to me at the time and how it seemed weaker than the other top tier teams. Boy was I wrong! What a great recap!

Usually your videos are good, but there's a decent bit of misinformation here. Everyone knew from almost day 1 that Dark Phoenix was the best character in the game and it wasn't really close. She was often banned in lower levels of play, so trying to make it seem like Viscant made some ground breaking discovery (when literally in your video he plays against FChamp ffs) is just disingenuous at best.

I love your videos Lobster!! Please make one documenting the rise of the GOAT Chris G from his Ametarasu team to the Godlike Morgan team! Please include that dude who tried to challenge him with no shirt when he won EVO 😂

J was great at strategies and was a factor since Marvel 2 but unfortunately after the release of Ultimate MVC3 he was unable to really make any noise outside of a few tournaments in Santee. I would be so hype if him and Dios came out to play more!!!! Great video.

Just saying, no one wrote Phoenix off. This game was only around for about 10 months. Everyone knew she was busted from the get-go. The only thing keeping her from being literally everywhere is because Justin/PRRog/Combofiend refused to play her out of pride. There were 8 phoenix players in the top 32. I was a phoenix player who got 33rd, and I played several phoenix mirrors to get there.
