At 75 years old, he's still touring and singing. Only in the last couple of years do you hear the signs of aging in his voice, but who cares, it's gorgeous. He's always had such a pitch-perfect gorgeous voice that I just can't stand that he and so many other incredible artists are aging and leaving us. One of his best songs. The background singer who did the solo is Arnold McCuller, and he has a solo career as well. He has a number of studio and live albums on small labels. His voice is amazing.

Debbie, I've always been jealous of James due to my mega-crush on Carly. lol He wasn't among my favorite artists, and yet I admit his talent is undeniable, and even for me his voice is as nostalgic as anyone's from the early-to-mid-'70s, my favorite half decade ever for music.

One of the all time great songs. James can't hit the high notes like he used to so he gives way to Arnold McCuller. Arnold is fantastic. My favorite version of this tune is the Dixie Chicks tribute. Natalie of the Chicks really nails this tune.

"His voice hasn't changed since Sweet Baby James' album" ??? I think you need to go back and listen to that again. I've watched listened to his records and watched his performances, throughout his career, and given he was 67 in this one, his voice has DEFINITELY changed. It's of course, only natural, but no, he struggled throughout this one, and it was plain to see. Any singer (or vocal coach) would agree ... not that it's a bad thing but, as singers get older, their voices get older, and less capable, and even great singers like James Taylor suffer the ravages of time. I appreciate YOUR appreciation of him, but his singing days are definitely coming to an end here, and it was clear to see when he had the Black singer let loose at the end of the song ... he was acknowledging that fact.

Love James Taylor. What a great singer songwriter. His style is more folk rock. I grew up with his music & had some of his records. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 100 million records worldwide. "You've Got A Friend" was a big hit for him in 1971 & was written by Carole King. Some other hits were "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)", "Handy Man", "Sweet Baby James", "Carolina in My Mind", "Your Smiling Face" etc. He was married at one time to Carly Simon. They had a few duets together including "Mockingbird" & "Devoted To You".
@dannycasson15512 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything said except that Taylor's guitar playing is "simple." I beg to differ! He uses many bass runs in between chords along with a multitude of hammer-ons and pull-offs. A real good example is the song, "Sweet Baby James." this man is a living legend.

Well, very predictably I am going to say that the record was better than this live performance. It had carly Simon on it, it runs a little faster and JT was doing all the vocal fills in the chorus which he omits or hardly does here. I love me some live JT, but for a first listen I would always advise going to the original which got everyone on board with the song when it was new.

The tenor that you loved so much in this song is Arnold McCuller. He is an amazing and accomplished Tenor. Trivia: in the slight hit movie, "Duets", featuring Gwenteth Paltrow, Huey Lewis, and Paul Giamatti, Arnold McCuller was the only singer to stand in for someone else. Arnold's version of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freebird" is one of the best and unique not done by the band itself. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z2fEiIV5eNqgeKc (Arnold McCuller singing) Harri - check out Bela Fleck and the Flecktones some time, given your interest in Steely Dan. Maybe "Left of Cool", kzbin.info/www/bejne/npC6h3xqaMucqrc They feature Vic Wooten, arguably the best bass player on the planet, Bela Fleck, incomparable banjo, Vic Wooten's brother, Future Man (and inventor of many instruments he plays with the Flecktones), and Jeff Coffin on various woodwinds.
