An interesting fact about this song is that the guitar solo is by Larry Knechtel who also played the piano on "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkel. For much of his career, he was a member of the Wrecking Crew and so he has a long list of session work he did for some of the big names in popular music. Thee guitar wasn't even his first instrument.

And obviously, he was normally the bassist for Bread having replaced Rob Royer.

Knechtel’s guitar solo is inimical and superb, the wah wah pedal has never been used more beautifully or eloquently than on this recording, I was barely a teenager back in the seventies when I first heard this song and I’ve loved it all my life.

I absolutely loved Bread back in the day but had to keep it under wraps! It would have completely ruined my "street cred" as a hard rock chick. Was also a closet fan of Neil Diamond and Barry Manilow but ONLY in private!! Now I couldn't care less what anyone thinks of my musical tastes and believe me they're ALL OVER THE PLACE!! I have literally gone from Rachmaninoff to Robert Johnson to Patsy Cline to Frank Zappa in the span of a few hours during one of my listening sessions!
@RetNemmoc5552 жыл бұрын
Such a spot-on comment, although Bread wasn't as much of a guilty pleasure for me as The Carpenters. Some of my rock friends would actually listen to Bread as a kind of palette cleanser between rock albums. I had very few friends who could handle my penchant for musical variety, though. Like you, I bounce between genres and eras. I laughed when you listed an example of your listening habits - it's refreshing to know there's someone else out there who mixes it up.

Carla, Deborah... imagine a hard-boiled rocker dude trying to keep Bread on the down low. David Gates is so tragically overlooked as a singer/songwriter and brilliant composer. While their music did reach the charts several times, they quietly faded into the background. I suppose it could be that the subject matter was also receding. Heartfelt lyrics, stellar melodies and sublime vocals. As tastes change so rapidly, the quality will never fade and we can always sit for a visit with this simply incredible catalog. My tastes have actually grown and expanded, and while I lean now more towards METAL, I still love a visit with this period...brings back such beautiful memories.

This song will forever be the 8th grade school bus ride to East Junior High School. Looking around that bus, I can still see the cute girls that rode on my bus. One of whom had a portable 8 track tape player and this album on tape. It would play most school day mornings for a couple of months. I can see the smiling faces. Some I am still in touch with. Some have fallen off the face of the Earth and sadly some have passed away but they will be forever 13 and 14 years old in my mind when this song plays.
