This was before Warner Brothers came a knocking, but he’s playing stuff from Powers of Ten. His hair isn’t as long as it was for those sessions AND he’s still playing the Roland guitar through the Holmes amps..so it would have to be sometime around 1988-89.

@@bobsebring2819 Shawn is a big hero of mine. Love his single-line playing, when he's not going too long without breaking up his showoff stuff. His writing skills are also way underrated. His tunes are expressed and structured like proper songs, not just guitar note mush and blues cliches. The last couple months of my listening and studying time has been all about Ted Greene. Opposite end of the musical spectrum, same level of virtuosity (ie, the best at what they did, living or dead). Neither of the two could do what each other could do. Ted though, to me, had the more intriguing skillset with the way he manipulated, interpreted, and outright invented guitar harmony.

Very reminiscent of Eric Johnson, of whom Shawn was a big fan. Saw EJ at the Antenna Club in Memphis in 86 and looked to my right and Shawn was right beside me! He was alone. We had just met about a week before at a Willys show. We'd go see the Willys everytime they played from 85 to 89. Became friends, then I moved due to graduation. We both were into aquaria so we'd talk fish most of the time lol I've met EJ twice and we talked about 30 mins both times and Shawn came up both times...he's still blown away by him. A genius on a whole other level then we've ever seen before. The most melodic, fastest player ever and most technically gifted musician to ever grace us with his presence. His Powers of Ten album is never gonna be repeated.... EVER! Then he went on to make that Indian fusion with Jonas Hellborg which meant we'd get the most insane live performance of any guitar player in history on the Paris Live Show from 2001. The Intro he does to start of the second set still blows my mind every single time I see and hear it.... and the rest of that show is just as amazing and incredible. There will never be another Shawn. Go watch the filmed sessions from when he recorded Powers of Ten and hear him play the piano and completely dominate West Side Boogie at 8 in the morning while he's fiddling with the amp, laughing and getting warmed up. On top of that, his rhythm section in Get You Back, which we see him record on one of his amazing Charvels, is so smooth, clear and soothing it almost brings me to tears.

I kind of agree. There is certainly no one to this day, that could win a duell against him. :) Not even Guthrie. He is so in sync with his instrument. Not many people have that. And he has his own tone, his own licks. He is not like the guys that can play anything, but have nothing else to offer. His fast runs sound like from another planet. One of the funniest videos is, where he is very young, playing in a cover band open air somewhere and nobody is listening, even though he is playing things, no one else on the planet could play at that time. Very good Hendrix covers and suddenly there are his alien licks ... :) I noticed, that I talk about him as if he is still alive. For me he is. Everytime a new shredder shreds something crazy, I think to myself: "It doesn't get any better that Shawn Lane."

Every once in a while when I see best guitarist lists on YT I come looking for Shawn Lane material to get reminded how far anybody else is from where he was. This version of Not Again is my absolute favorite, so much more raw than on the album. I adore it. Is it you playing? Fantastic duo tbh. To be able to carry a gig with just two instruments is a real art, you should be proud. Is there more recordings from this evening? I remember buying Powers Of Ten in a thrift store in Sydney when I was training as an audio engineer in 1993/1994. Don't even know why I bought it. I was floored. Maybe I had previously heard the Centrifugal Funk album before, I am not sure. But Shawn has since then been the guitarist I have admired the most. I hate shredding. And he was not a shredder at all. Always very musical. Incredible feel and timing. Otherwordly I dare say.

Shawn Lane had a level of technique and speed especially from 1987-1996, that no other player over ever seen or heard demonstrate. That’s the bottom line for me. Find me another player that improvises solos for 2-7 minutes straight in a live setting, that combines the beautiful phrasing, legato and picking at the level that Shawn did it. If your favorite players aren’t playing at the level that Shawn could, it’s because they can’t. If you or I are not playing at Shawn’s level, it’s because we simply can’t. If we could, we would be demonstrating that ability. Hell, if any of us a guitar players, or any other influential player could do it, they would be. If you don’t believe Shawn could do what others can’t, post a video of whoever else you think is better, and let the rest of us who know better, see this player who can do it better than Shawn did it. If anyone commenting on this video surpasses Shawn at his best, then please post a link so we can see it. This is a challenge: You show me a video of the best player/performance you’ve ever seen, that isn’t Shawn Lane, and I will post many many links to videos of Shawn doing things on the guitar that no one else has EVER done.

In three days it will be 20 years since Shawn passed. Hard to believe he was only 40 when he died. He fit so much into those 40 years and, sadly, was in poor health for much of it. Glad you said it. Shawn was a genius for sure, one of the greats, but describing someone as the GOAT involves so many considerations. I am sure Shawn would never have claimed this for himself as he was a great student of, and fully appreciated, those who came before him. Relevant factors not only include moving on the art of the guitar in various ways both technical and musically, but also their influence on future generations of guitarist, as well as sustaining a long career at the highest level. Two guitarists meet these criteria and more, namely Allan Holdsworth and John McLaughlin. Shawn’s sheets of sound approach and later interest in Indian music pay homage to both these titans. Would Shawn have gone on to do the same, most probably, but let’s not forget he was standing on the shoulders of these giants.

There's no such a thing called the best guitar player in the world or the best guitar player of all times, you can't compare a rock/metal guitar player to a blues guitar player or to a jazz guitar player, nobody expected from B.B. King to play a flashy guitar solo, what you are doing is idealization of Shawn Lane, yeah, he's a great guitar player but a lot of people would say that Allan Holdsworth was the great guitar player of all times, i have a list of my own of the 15 best guitar players of all times but i don't have inner ranking between them, so anyone from my list is as good as the others, no man or woman on earth can determine who is the best guitar player of all times, it's subjective!!! i have a lot of respect to Shawn Lane, you can be sure, take it easy and thanks for sharing.
