If you're a Harry Potter fan, then you need to watch Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001). This movie is the first time many people see Harry Potter, and it's a classic!
In this movie, Harry Potter is just a regular student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry until he is selected by the wizard Merlin to be a wizard himself. Along the way, Harry confronts danger, mystery, and magic. This is a great movie to watch if you're a first-time viewer of Harry Potter or someone who's just revisiting the series. I promise you won't be disappointed!

another fun fact all the candles you see hanging in the first scene when the enter hogwarts for the first time are *all* *REAL* in fact they had a difficult time keeping them suspended because the flames would burn the wire and the candles would drop. every other movie they would be CG'd in.

Harry KNOWS what it is like to go without. Knows it in his bones, in a way that even the cash-strapped Weasley family can’t. He also knows that this boy just offered to split his own very meager food, and he knows that he likes the Weasley family, after the mother was so nice to him. And you can’t convince me that Molly Weasley didn’t see a lost looking child who was obviously going to the train all alone, and intentionally say things like “9 3/4” and “muggles” as she was close enough for him to hear.

Subtle little thing that's easily missed, in the great hall when Neville says that "he can't remember what he's forgotten" he is the only one not wearing his cloak In the next scene during the flying lesson he has his cloak so at some point in-between he realised and went to go get it It was this very cloak that broke his fall from the castle roof so that rememberall saved his life

It's interesting to note that Nicholas Flamel is the only real life, historical person mentioned in the Harry Potter stories. His house still stands in Paris and is now a restaurant. I had lunch there several years ago. With the popularity of the Potter stories, they put together a Harry Potter menu for children. Many of the seemingly trivial events in the early movies will go on to play important plot points in the later films.

Wow, that’s so cool. When I was in Paris in 2004, it was just a closed up historical address. That makes me so happy that they are using it for community purpose.

I always loved that aspect and wish Rowling had continued including real historical figures. Imagine other famous occultists or alchemists, like Pythagoras, John Dee or Blavatsky being revealed as secret witches and wizards with some part to play in the backstory of the modern wizarding world. Maybe Benjamin Franklin was secretly a founding father of MACUSA and attended Beauxbatons as a boy, which is why he gets along so well with the French. Pythagoras actually did found a cult which believed in a kind of spiritual numerology, which I could imagine Hermione's arithmancy teacher claiming was the foundation of her field.

The Potter Family have a long history of inventing spells, charms, magical objects and medical potions that people use on a regular basis. Harry being the only surviving member of his family inherited everything. He is the owner of all of those patents. That’s why he’s super rich. The money magically appears in his vault.

Tom Felton (Draco) and Harry Melling (Dudley) really where the best child actors of the bunch and don’t get enough credit in my opinion. I’m convinced that’s why they where cast as the villains because it’s much easier to direct a child to play a likable character that’s fairly similar to themselves but it’s harder to have them play the total opposite and a villain. They had to use the most talented child actors in the harder roles. The other actors caught up by movie 3/4 but those two where the stand outs from purely an acting perspective when they started.

In the US translation of the movie/book the title was changed to "Sorcerer's Stone" from "Philosopher's Stone". They changed it because "the publisher was worried US readers would neither know or care what a philosopher is." Now there's quite a few stories about the philosopher's stone (i.e. the elixer of life), and it was believed to have been created by Nicolas Flamel. Nicolas Flamel was an actual alchemist, and there's a lot of interesting stories about him. One of my favorites is how after his and his wife's recorded deaths, there were reported sightings of both of them all across Europe, furthering the myth that he created the alchemical secret to immortality. And like some others have pointed out, you can actually visit his home in Paris, as its been turned into a restaurant.

I've always felt the opposite from most about this--that Columbus doesn't get enough credit for the fantastic job he does bringing the books off the page and to life on the screen, and that with the change at the helm for 3, the choices made (such as the move to "street" clothes etc) lessen the movie. 2nd book was I thought the weakest, but may be one of the best of the movies. Loved the 3rd book, but one of my least favorite of the movies.

The thing is that back when Voldemort was in power he put a spell on his name so he could like hear what people were talking about or he could find their location or something.... Love hearing your thoughts on this, you have very interesting takes and an analytical mind for sure. About Harry "buying" Ron as a friend tho. From my point of view this is Harrys first time having anything close to a friend. This is also his first time having freedom and money to buy something he wants for himself. His first instinct is to share that with someone. Idk I just never saw that as buying Ron's friendship.

Rowling did master plot twists throughout this whole series. I think one of the things that makes these movies still strong 20 years later, is that as you learn each twist you can go back and watch all the previous movies and see whole new levels of story telling in them. If you are gonna be super analytical about the series, which is totally fine, I suggest reading the books after the fact so as to not ruin the movies but also to fill in the substantial gaps of lore the movies were unable to include. The snake stuff is better explained later but sufficient to say that that encounter is in Harry's perspective and would look entirely different to anyone else. Also muggles don't see a lot of things that is in plain sight because of charms to make them not notice it. And when people do see stuff it can cause the authorities to erase that memory to protect the secrecy of the wizarding world. There is an innate protection Magic tends to give or be subconsciously used by wizards when it comes to physical injury. Falling 20 feet wouldn't neccesarily be fatal and in the case of Neville Longbottom not his first time falling as he fell out of a two story window when he was younger and bounced if i recall correctly.

No spoilers, just backstory: Harry had to be left with family because of protection of family blood, that will last until he’s 17 (when witches and wizards come of age.) Platform 9 3/4 exists so the magical world can stay hidden from Muggles. The cloak belonged to Harry’s dad, who had given it to Dumbledore, who returned it to Harry. Quidditch is NOT a children’s game. Kids play it, kinda like Soccer is over there. There is a World Cup, which you will see in 4. The caretaker, Flinch, is a squib: a non-magical child of magical parents: he has no magical powers, but knows the world. Please stay with the movies! It’s totally worth it!

8:18 I was literally crying at how you were describing the lighting and warmth of the colors while Harry looks absolutely goofed. Lmao Edit: So I think the main reason Harry bought the candy and snacks was for two reasons. First being that he is new to the wizard world and had a curiosity for their snacks. Hence why he was asking Ron. Second he saw that Ron's family did not have expendable income and likely wanted to show Ron that he is generous. I don't think he bought the snacks to win Ron over. I think it was more of a generous gesture to make their trip more pleasant.

Dumbledore is an old Welsh word for "bumblebee". First and last together; Albus Dumbledore is "White Bumblebee". McGonagall is a Scottish surname, meaning Son of Conghal, and Conghal translates directly as "Valor Hound". Hagrid is a variation of the word hagridden, meaning to be tormented with dread or nightmares, and is a compound of Hag and Ride.

Some answers to questions asked in no particular order: Dumbledore said "Alas, earwax.." not "at last! earwax!" just so we're clear here. He was NOT celebrating the discovery of the flavor. The Wizarding World has a different paradigm of "danger" than us muggles, virtually any non-lethal injury is more or less entirely recoverable in a matter of weeks at most. The "don't say 'Voldemort!'" thing started because Voldemort had acquired enough power at one point to hone in on any individual who says his name at any time, and his followers wouldn't be stupid enough to say it- so it made hunting his enemies trivial until everyone caught on to the magic at work. Harry defeated Prof. Quirrel and Voldemort at the end so easily not because either Quirrel or Voldemort were weak or incompetent so much as [REDACTED]. You'll learn more about why Harry is [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] with Voldemort, and especially Voldemort's [REDACTED]. There's a large number of details and events that tie into the rest of the films that seem absolutely inconsequential without context, which puts the viewer more or less in the same position as Harry and allows for payoff to the various mysteries. It is worth noting that many of the mysteries both within the movies themselves and the larger ones that span over most or all of the films ARE to some degree solvable by the viewer, though rewatches of previous films may be necessary to get those kinds of pieces together.

I always had this feeling that Harry's journey throughout the school year was orchestrated by Dumbledore, especially the dangerous situations, to lure Voldemort out of hiding. For instance, Dumbledore was certainly watching the entire time, when they were in the Forbidden Forest, as it is an unusual punishment that would need to be sanctioned by the headmaster. Firenze was not there by coincidence. Neither was the mirror in the random hallway or the fact that Dumbledore sneaked up on him like that. There are quite a few things that are poorly explained in the movies, so I hope you find the time to read the books some day.

Your reaction does highlight how well the story is told that you figured out so much without all the back story, and a few massive plot holes too. Dumbledore should fire Snape because he looks like he is going to eat the children, ROTFLMAO! Truth, but he can't. Hogwarts is one of the most dangerous places on Earth, hands down. Disney does not own Wizarding World. It was made and still owned by WB. Hogwarts the amusement park is at Universal. Most of the time the movies are found on HBO Max, now that they are merged. Disney would have to extract it from WB's cold dead fingers.

It became Sorcerer’s Stone for the American audience. The original title has the Philosopher’s Stone. The producers felt they either Americans were too dumb to know what the Philosopher’s Stone was or that they wouldn’t read a book/see a movie with it in the title

one thing i wish was explained more is that extreme sports or more dangerous situations are not seen as so extreme because they have magic to fix injuries pretty easily and i think it leads to a more blase attitude to certain situations lol can't wait for you to continue down this rabbit hole

“911, What is your emergency?”… … “Yeah, um… I think a wizard, a giant, and a cat lady… I mean she’s a lady, but also a cat… they just left a child on my doorstep with a fresh scar on its head. Yeah, they left a note, but.. I can’t take care of this kid. I mean he’s going to be emotionally scarred for life and that’s just not something I’m prepared to deal with! You’ll come get him? Oh, thank you so much!” The End

One of the worst things about the Dursleys is that they don't gain anything from not letting Harry get the letter. They purely do it because they despise him and don't want anything good to happen to him.

Hope you keep watching, the books were meant to grow with the children who read them. The messages in the books/ films are wonderful especially for children. One of the thing I love about Harry, Ron and Hermione is that they are just normal imperfect kids, not superheroes . They are challenged and have to rise to the occasion time and time again. Very relatable to the target audience. I say this as someone who never thought they would like this series. Also, cast of these films contains many of the best British actors alive at the time , many Oscar and Bafta nominated and winning. With so many inexperienced child actors they really helped to lend some gravitas to the films. Embrace the magic. The budget kept increasing as they went along because they were such huge money makers.

In the fourth movie you'll find out why hagrid is so big, but in the first book they described him as twice. The height of a normal man and five times is wide. He supposed to be a big dude to say the least and that bike does belong to a much smaller man. You will meet in the third called a sirius black played by Gary oldman

Professor McGonnagall is actually just a huge quidditch buff and is excited that Harry is good on a broom because she's sick of Gryffindor losing to Snape's Slytherin team. The nepotism take makes sense without that context though.

Hagrid means to be ridden with hags from old English. muggle was a term used for jazz musicians who would take drugs in the 20s and 30s. Dumbledore is also old English It means bumblebee and professor McGonagle’s first name, Minerva is taken from a Roman goddess equivalent to the Greek goddess Athena.

Harry Potter isn`t just "The Boy Who Lived". He is the boy who destroyed Voldemort`s powers and the boy who stopped the war and made the evil forces lose the war. Of course, he is treated differently. I`m surprised that there are no oil paintings or statues of him.

David Bradley can play nice roles too. He played the First Doctor in a crossover special of Doctor Who. In fact, three Harry Potter characters were played by Doctors (Filch, Olivander, Barty Crouch Jr.)

Comments related to timecode 12:40 - The alias Voldemort "he who shall not be named" because, and I'm assuming here, it has to do with "name" magic. Voldemort has been gone for many years and only "comes back" once Harry and Hagrid say his name in this scene. This comes back around in the later movies as a subtle note...

There is some additional background that the movies don't explain. The reason he lives with his aunt because being family there is extra protection against magic. Tbe movies become more adult as the children grow. This was quite light. It begins to darken in third movie, by tbe fifth it is extremely dark. As for character arcs Snape has the best of all of them. The actor is Alan Rickman who also played Hans in Die Hard.

Actually David Bradley, the actor of Walder Frey and Mr. Filch, did play a very comedic role in the 2 part mini series Color of Magic (tv translation of famous fantasy book series Discworld by Terry Pratchett). Bradley plays a retired 80 year old Conan The Barbarian with a lisp because of bad teeth.

It’s true that Gryffindors, like any other house, can make mistakes & do messed up things. However, the same can be said for members of any other house. The important thing is how they learn from their mistakes and grow as people. Additionally, while Gryffindors may have a reputation for being cocky or overconfident, they also have a strong sense of loyalty and bravery that drives them to do great things. As for Hufflepuff, while its members are often seen as kind and hardworking, this doesn't mean that they are without flaws or negative aspects. Hufflepuffs can sometimes be too trusting or naive, and they may struggle with assertiveness or standing up for themselves. However, these weaknesses are balanced by their loyalty and dedication to their friends and family. Slytherin is often viewed as the "bad" house, but in reality, its members are just as capable of doing good as anyone else. Slytherins are often resourceful and ambitious, and they can be very dedicated to achieving their goals. However, this can sometimes lead them to make morally questionable decisions or pursue power at any cost. But as with any other house, there is a wide range of personalities and values within Slytherin, and it is unfair to generalize all Slytherins as being evil or bad. Ultimately, the Hogwarts houses are a way of exploring different personality types and values within the wizarding world. Each house has its own strengths and weaknesses, and when they work together, they can achieve great things.

In the book, there are 3 empty squares on the chessboard. One for Harry, 1 for Hermione and 1 for Ron so Ron wasn't riding a horse. He actually was the knight. The trouble with this is in the book the Queen actually connected with him and sliced him up a bit, a bit too dark for a children's move, much better for the queen to hit the horse and Ron to fall 2 feet while yelling.

I can't believe you told Neville to "mind his own business" when truly he really is. The consequences of students breaking rules affects the whole house (in this case Gryffindor) you get merits or deductions of points, and the house with the most points at the end of the school year wins. This actually happens in the UK, most if not all schools will have four houses and students are selected into each house on the first day they arrive at the school. My school we had Newton, Tennyson, Franklyn and St. Hugh.
