People can say what they want about Benitez, he's won the Champions League, Europa League (X2), La Liga (X2), FA Cup, Italian Cup, Club World Cup. He's won more than 99.9% of people who will ever go into management. And Valencia and Liverpool weren't world beaters when he joined them.

Rafa had the misfortune of coaching in places where the teams at the time were just transitioning from other managers who were so embedded with the players. Add that with the known problem that Rafa was never an ideal man manager. A few players have quoted this including Stevie and xabi Alonso. So this is not new or surprising. Rafa is still a great coach even if he was cold and distant with players.

Benitez definitely has had a successful career as a manager overall. What he did at Valencia and Liverpool was fantastic. I think however things started to turn for him when he had the rant about Fergie facts and started to become a bit more prickly towards various clubs owners in the media. He had the press conference where he was clearly sulking after being told off by his owners and answered almost every question saying something like he was only responsible for the training of the players. After taking over treble winners Inter Milan and not having the best of times at Inter, he won the World Club Cup and then basically publicly said that Moratti had to back him or sack him, so Moratti chose the latter option. Although Newcastle fans may have loved him at times, he definitely played that relationship against Mike Ashley in press conferences. It's a shame because you can't question his success, I just think he has tried too much to use the media to manipulate clubs and it has probably ruined his reputation a bit
@robdatta8767
@robdatta8767 6 ай бұрын
Do you know anything about football? Benitez is universally hated by most fans and players, including his former Valencia and Liverpool players. He basically fluked a Champions League win with a goal that never was against Mourinho's Chelsea juggernaut in the semis, and then Dudek saved penalties to win the final in Istanbul. And then Benitez promptly goes on to sell Dudek to Madrid and dismantles the winning team to then win absolutely nothing with Liverpool. He spent millions on over 80+ players at Liverpool and the only world class players he actually bought were Mascherano, Alonso, and Torres; just 3 out of 80! He dined out on that fluke Istanbul win with someone else's team and conned the deluded Liverpool fans into thinking that Hicks and Gillette were the problem, when it was he who squandered all their transfer money. As for Valencia, ask any Valencia fan what happened after he left there. He only won because both Real and Barca were going through a transition and Real hadn't started their Galactico project yet. And once he left, he left Valencia in such a terrible state that they kept having to sell their best players for years - Villa, Mata, Silva - and never recovered for years. And for even more proof on how terrible of a manager he is, look what he did at Inter. Mourinho wins a historic, unprecedented treble in Italian football and Benitez goes there and promptly dismantles the squad and wins nothing!

@@robdatta8767 what's with the angry little man response? First of all, in case I've confused things and come across as a fan of Benitez, I'm really not. I can however see that he has had success that deserves to be acknowledged. Regardless of how good Madrid and Barca were at the time, he still won a couple of league titles with Valencia and the UEFA cup. I guess the rest of the clubs in Europe must have been terrible too, afterall even Porto won the Champions League that season. I guess we should all disregard the La Liga titles that Diego Simeone has won at Atleti because they were both at times when Barca and Real Madrid weren't at their very best. Pretty similar scenario to Benitez at Valencia although he didn't spend nearly as much as Atleti. After winning the champions league he won nothing with Liverpool? Super Cup, FA Cup, Community Shield. Although he didn't win it he also was runner up in the Champions League a couple of seasons later when Inzaghi won it for Milan. Still an achievement to get to another final with a team of only 3 good players. Didn't win anything at Inter? Super cup and World Club Cup would suggest otherwise. Went on to win the Europa League with Chelsea and won the Championship to get Newcastle back in the Premier League. So maybe you should read your previous comment and then ask yourself what you know about football. Again, I don't like Benitez at all, but to say he hasn't been successful seems foolish unless you only consider people who win the league every season to be successful.

If i remember rightly Benitez was brought in as an interim manager until the end of the season then they brought in Jose for the next season. Not sure he was got rid off it was a temporary job anyway. He did make sure Frank Lampard played a lot to help him beat Booby Tambling's record. I did not understand his treatment of John Terry but they probably just clashed. We did win the Europa Cup so not sure the players were not playing because they were. I actually liked Jermaine Pennant as a player even as a Chelsea fan but he was a bit stroppy at times.

The Chelsea players still played well for Benitez despite not liking him. They won the FA Cup in a season where they was still a disconnect between manager, players and fans. The players were professional enough to win. They didn’t take the route of losing to get the manager out which was much easier. Rather they just didn’t think the manager make the future of the players at the club secure. JT would be gone in the summer if Benitez stayed. The fans will turn against Rafa even more. Senior players would begin to fall out with the gaffer and all the spiralling effects on the club. Every organisation issue surveys and opinion sampling towards the end of a year or season. The players simply agreed not to give Rafa a positive review. I don’t think anyone walked into Abramovich’s office to speak to him. Owners have their ear on ground and someone would have told Roman the players were not happy. Roman isn’t stupid. He would sense it and act. He doesn’t need a face to face with the players to act.

It is the most professional way to behave. They had a squad of world class players, many of them captains of their nations. Those players set the standards, and when a manager comes in and doesn't help the team reach those standards, the players taking a stand is the correct thing to do. The players had a hunger to win, and if the manager didn't bring that same hunger, he needs to go, nothing wrong with that.

Rafa was a great tactician. Man management is different to coaching tactics. I guess he just let the big characters in the dressing room deal with things.

Well that explains why Pennant never did anything. You can't expect praise every time you have a good game. The objective should always be to do better. If a coach is highlighting your weaknesses he is trying to ground you. Amd if you aren't taking that on board or trying to prove them wrong then you dont have the right mentality

He is a good manager not a great manager. His way of playing is not lose, very defensive hence Liverpool used to tie a lot of matches. This is why we could never win a Premiere League under him. We He had a Ferrari of team that was waiting to be unleashed and he drove that team like a smart car. We were too busy turning draws to win losses into draws that we never played on the front foot. He was lucky to have Torres and Stevie to save him time after time. LIverpool fans gave Torres hell for going to Chelsea but have no negative thing to say to him when he gladly accepted the Chelsea job and on top of that the Everton job. Regardless majority of the players who played under him did not like him and have nothing nice to stay about him. In addition since 2013 he has been a failure. Just got fired from Getafe.

The Boss should be more powerful than the players. That’s problem with modern football 🥅. Players are more powerful than the manager. That should not be the case. Rafa record shows he can’t be that bad as these guys are saying.

Jermaine was signed by Arsenal for a record fee for a I think a 16 year old. Never fulfilled his potential, or certainly the potential that Arsenal believed he had. Was it temperament or not good enough? Don’t know, but Football has many a story like this. Just sad really. Benitez CV stands up against most.
