3:05 This might be quite a valid way of putting things when comparing show runners. If not for the fact that it wasn't even written by Russell himself. This was a terrible representation, really, because it was only PRODUCED by Russell. Not written or directed. And he was the one who only wrote ONE SCRIPT that didn't feature the planet Earth in shape or form. And he was the one who never stopped using the Daleks and more often than not re-used Classic Who monsters than creating original monsters. And even if he did create original monsters, they were the most basic things ever (Y'know, an eight year old could have thought of the Slitheen, and one of them even did and ended up being the Abzorbaloff) or they ended up being "the last of it's kind". That's one of MY main issues with New Who; they create some actually interesting monsters with actually interesting concepts. And then they end up just killing them literally forever. And the reason why we got this story from a so-and-so writer is because Russell actually asked writers to come write for Doctor Who (Like J.K. Rowling), whereas Moffat lets writers come to him (Neil Gaiman) and just gets whoever's a regular writer (Mark Gatiss, Gareth Roberts, Toby Whithouse) on the writing staff and just tells them to do whatever. It's gotten better in recent years, especially seeing as we have a female writer for Series 9, and he did get Neil Cross in as well to write for the show. Personally for me, I think Neil Cross should be the new show runner after Moffat's gone, because he's clearly capable of doing a self-contained series on his own (Watch Luther, it's one of the best things I've ever watched, bar Doctor Who of course) and he's said before he has a lot of Doctor Who stories thought up in his head. So yeah, I prefer Moffat's Who over Russell's Who, but I don't think it's that strong either, though I do think it's closer and more faithful to the Classic Series than Russell's "chavvy Doctor Who" ever was. *Ducks for cover*

you know this works pretty well a classic who four parter. the cliffhanger for part one is when tobby gets possessed, the cliffhanger for part two is the pit opening, and the cliffhanger for part three is when the door in the vent opens to reveal more ood. in fact you could probably do this with any new who two parter.

THAT STORY TRAUMATIZED ME! It's a really scary one for me, so I've never had the chance to judge it as a story. Amy was a real bitch to the doppelgangers, in a different way to the rest of the guys, especially towards the Flesh Doctor. They say that they were testing Amy, but that never really went anywhere to a scene that saw the Doctor disappointed in Amy. Also, it ends up being a base-under-siege story, right? So it's gotta be good, right? *Ducks for cover*

My alltime favourite of either new or old Doctor who, my appreciation is slightly diminished by reading Lovecraft and thinking that perhaps an original monster design might have been better than a stereotypical devil, but still amazing episode. Might be cool for doctor who to hint at some forgotten era at the dawn of the universe filled with incomprehensible Lovcraftian horrors, in which a war raged that makes the time war look like a minor squable over who's going to do the washing up from which which the weeping angels and the beast are survivors. I've been thinking it'd be an interesting idea to introduce a creature that prompted the angels to develop their 'quantum lock' defence mechanism.
@jaimelannister72748 жыл бұрын
The RTD era at least had a handful of exceptional episodes (usually Moffat penned, oddly enough in retrospect) each season to make up for the lesser ones. For the SM era I struggle to think of any ... Series 5 had a couple, Series 6 had the Doctor's Wife, Series 7 ... ehh. I haven't even watched S8 or S9.

I think it's a mix of doctor who being newish and people actually dying. There was a risk to everything. With Moffat, there eventually became an attitude when a companion died that it was going to be reversed in five seconds. One underrated episode for me is Father's Day. The reason for me is because it is the most unique episode. It was foreshadowed in the beginning and it was a companion trying to change history to benefit themselves in a way which no one else has done since. I also think that Davies took more risks weirdly enough and focused more on character than story

As someone who grew up watching classic Who, and was thrilled to see a new iteration come out on air I approached "new who" with an open mind and open heart. I didn't REALLY become aware of the writer/show runner drama until about the end of the Matt Smith era. In 2005 I was 20, so I had watched and just known which episodes I liked, and which I didn't. Here's my hot take: Without having been aware of any of the shit that was going on on the internet, I had favored the Davies episodes. NOT saying that Moffat didn't write some EXCELENT shit. I feel everything you are saying about Davis is the truth about Moffat. My feelings at the time, and still are that Davies approached the show to be AS CLOSE to the original as possible. Look at the Daleks, SPOT ON PERFECT in Davies era, down to the sound and visual effects used, perfect. I think Moffat sat in the background writing some true gold, biding his time and when it was his time to run the show he made creative choices that departed from the standard "who" which again, I think is totally fine but can understand would cause some division. At the time I remember specifically having a debate with a whovian friend of mine (during Moffat era). I had commented how I just felt as though earlier "new who" just struck a bell with me more than the convoluted new stuff (referring specifically to who was responsible for exploding Matt Smith's TARDIS). I had said it was confusing and unknown (which at the time it WAS) and he argued it was the same aliens who put in the Pandorica (which it was not). I had been paying attention, just because it was confusing does not mean I didn't get it. It was revealed to be Madame Kovarian the very next season. Talking Classic Who quickly. The show getting stale is the VERY REASON the writers came up with things like "regeneration". To most literally give the show a "facelift" every so often. Ask anyone who their favorite classic doctor is (while there is ONE clear objective definitive answer) you will get varying responses. Everyone loves one particular Doctor, fond memories of one particular era. And new who is EXACTLY THE SAME. We have to "bend and break" some cannon rules every now and then to keep things interesting, or "just for cheap tricks" as so delicately put to Martha. What I think is TOTALLY stupid is the divisiveness. I mean seriously, aren't we adults? Can't I say I like red shirts, without all the blue shirt people feeling attacked and visa versa? Some people like new who, some don't. Some people like Newer Who, some don't. Some people like New Trek, some don't. Some people HATED The Last Jedi, Some LOVED it. Just because I state I love broccoli, does not mean I'm saying YOU HATE carrots...

Stuart Hardy: Spends 2 minutes of a 7 minute video actually reviewing an episode. Not that I'm complaining; the whole video was engaging and I fully enjoyed it. It's just that it was a 5 minute overview of Doctor Who before singling out an episode to talk about for the remainder of the video.

The reason that the threat isn't Sutekh is basically the same as the reason the Ood aren't the Sensorites and the Slitheen aren't the Fomasi. Russel wanted to avoid paying their original creators. That's just outright theft.

I think a perfect era would be 50/50 Davies and Moffat. Moffat's storytelling becomes irritatingly convoluted and overly quirky after a time, and Davies' storytelling can be a bit too childish for my liking. But on balance, my favourite NuWho stories do come from the Davies era, and that includes this one right here.

What's weird is that I thought "Human Nature!" when he said "then I'm gonna do a follow-up review of a Tenth Doctor story I have no issue with". I completely ruled out this one because I have some issues about it that I thought Stuart here would also have a problem with. LesserWhovian Whoops! Didn't mean that the episodes I listed were average. They are the ones that are so much better than the best of New Who. Inferno is so much more interesting than Blink, hence why it is rather cliche to find these stories in Whovian's top 10 favourite stories list.
