The ultimate Protestant hymn. What Bunyan is actually saying is that his own pilgrimage is not to find holy relics and temples of gold but to follow God's calling to find sinners to preach to, in his case in Bedford, Elstow, Kempston and surrounding villages that he could walk to in a day. He believed you didn't need a priest, you didn't need a church and you didn't need permission to speak from the state, all you needed was a bible, a man to preach it and a crowd to listen. And he was persecuted and imprisoned for it because he wasn't a licensed (ie Church of England) vicar, but he remained defiant. I happen to be an unbeliever but I respect that man enormously for challenging the state to defend freedom of speech. And so did the gaolers at Bedford Prison who quietly let him out from time to time to carry on preaching and earning a living fixing pots and pans and sharpening kitchen knives. Every market square preacher, political speaker and social media commentator owes his freedom of speech to men such as Bunyan. It is with some irony that the Church of England has taken this hymn to its heart as a regular feature in its services.

But it is not a new hymn, this is a corruption written by Percy Dearmer in 1906 to a text written by John Bunyan in his Pilgrim’s Progress of 1684. The original opening was ‘Who would true valour see’

A very great hymn from John Bunyan. Nice to see the Queen singing along... Bunyan was imprisoned in 1664 for organising religious meetings outside of the Monarch and Church of England's control.

A memorable historical event of trumpets, the hymn, and Queen Elizabeth II. Somehow, her steadfast dedicated life and devotion to God, country, and family gave us all some form of stability. Even my little hamlet is northern New England USA.

I've loved this hymn from childhood. had it sung at my 2nd wedding. What a joke, my now, very ex, kept singing "to be a pilchard!" Should have stuck him in a ''stargazy pie!'. My 3rd and I, 22 years together now, married 13 years, we shot off to Gretna Green in Scotland and what a wonderful day ❤❤❤

I like the speed of this rendition. In Eb major, my favourite flat key, with the correct lyrics, (some arrangements have altered the wording). I also like the fanfare of trumpets and descant in the last verse. The TV series Bodyline had this hymn sung during the English tourists voyage to the Antipodes - and in the same key, too (the team formed a choir!)

It was the "Puritan," a name given as an insult, who restored true religion to England and who gave birth to what is now called the United States of America. Thanks be to God, the Puritan impulse lives in every age. The English Puritans produced two literary geniuses, Milton and Bunyan. Moreover, while Paradise Lost represents the highest achievement of the English Language, Pilgrim's Progress represents the truest expression of the strenuous Christian life. Milton's epic poem is a singular delight for the well-furnished mind. Bunyan's simple allegory is a faithful roadmap for the common man--or woman! Long live the Queen!
