Second time’s a charm for one of Dan and Gav’s most difficult and crushing experiments yet- a slow motion car crash. Everyone’s going to be rubbernecking this one. Watch The Super Slow Show, only on KZbin.

A 50 mile an hour crash equals a 50 mile an hour impact Newton's third law of motion every action has an equal and opposite reaction
@violamitch112 жыл бұрын
Interestingly-having survived a head-on car accident, both cars going 55mph, I’ve done some digging-and they’re both right. A lot of people say a head-on, both cars going 50mph is like smashing into a brick wall at 100mph”. That is incorrect. It’s like smashing into a brick wall at 50mph. But it’s also like smashing into a parked car at 100mph, so these guys aren’t technically wrong by describing it as a 100mph collision. Think of it like this: in a head-on, both cars basically come to a dead stop very near the point of collision-just like hitting a brick wall. But if you smashed into a parked car at 100mph, both cars would go flying in the direction of the moving car. Therefore the G-forces are similar.

That's where I got the idea. It's just that's it's been 122 years and apparently, no one has done it since. This time, do it with high-speed cameras at least 3 angles (either side and above), involving maybe 2 old diesel-electrics. A RR co. somewhere must have a few (+ some beat-up rail cars, too) that they would be willing to part with. They could even sponsor the event. Maybe also throw in a tanker car or 2, filled with goopy stuff (gunge, slime, stale pudding, mud, other) for an epic splat! Or save the splat for another train collision stunt.

We had 2 loaded freight trains collide head on right south of Guymon and north of Goodwell Oklahoma about 5 or so years ago. This one caught fire and exploded on impact. Then another freight train head on about less than 2 hours south of us somewhere near Panhandle Texas about 3 years ago. Starting to wonder if it’s a common issue.

Pretty sure I remember on Mythbusters that two cars hitting head on at 50 mph ISN'T the same as a car crashing at 100 mph. If I remember correctly because of the conservation of momentum the impacts neutralise each other out and there is no additive effect. So it is the same as a single car crashing at 50 mph.
@AndrewMeyer6 жыл бұрын
It's pretty obvious when you think about it. Each car doesn't care how fast the other is moving; only how fast it has to decelerate (which is the same regardless of whether it's hitting a brick wall or another car of equal mass). Now if the other vehicle was an unstoppable freight train, _then_ it might be equivalent to a 100 mph collision.
@SgtLion6 жыл бұрын
This is the same as one car hitting a stationary one at 100mph. Each car absorbs energy which muddies the question, but it 100% IS a 100mph collision.
@StudioPetrikas6 жыл бұрын
+SgtLion No. Just no. Source: Physics.
@Mirality6 жыл бұрын
You're both right in different ways. Two cars hitting each other head-on at 50mph is roughly equivalent to one car at 100mph hitting a stationary car, which is also roughly equivalent to one car at 50mph hitting an immovable wall. The total energy is dispersed over both cars in the first two cases but is applied entirely to the car in the latter case (assuming the wall is truly immobile and impervious).
@Mt-BNN6 жыл бұрын
SgtLion no its not neuton's third law in action here when both cars collide their ebergy tried to transfer drom obe car to the other but since both habe the same speed it cancels itself out meaning the speed of the on coming car doesnt matter. Infact if you took a car drove it at 50 mph inti a wall you woukd have identical damage than what is ovserved here

That's not true. The cars are each moving 100 mph relative to each other. Speed is relative, which is why we're not currently being thrown off the face of the earth while hurtling through space around the sun at 20 miles a second -- we're moving at the same speed as the planet.

two cars going 50 mph into each other does not equal one car crashing at 100mph

2 cars going at each other at 50 mph is equivelent to a single impact into a solid wall at 50 mph
@jessstjames33014 жыл бұрын
... no? How does that make sense? I fail to see how an impact with a wall going 0 mph would cause the same amount of damage as a car coming AT YOU at 50 mph.
@jaredkennedy65764 жыл бұрын
@@jessstjames3301 The total amount of energy expended between two cars colliding head on at 50 is the same as one car hitting at 100, but the forces experienced by the individual cars is the same as if they hit an immovable object at 50. 5th Gear proved this in one of their crash test episodes.

Hythbusters tested this already. Two cars hiting each other at 50 miles an hour is NOT the same as a 100 mile an hour impact
